98.9 being shopped around

I'm surprised nobody has commented on this yet. Well usually where there's smoke there's fire so anyone want to take a guess on who might buy it?

The staff doesn't know? Well there can't be much staff anyway. NABCO should buy this and swap 989 and 997 formats and see what JackFM can do on the bigger stick.

Does Jack even have staff outside of maybe a sales exec or two and some promo people ?

Maybe saga will buy it and put Mix on a intown signal. Or worse EMF buys it and puts Air1 on there.

I'd be ok with Air1 on 98.9 - would be easy to do too -- Plenty of space at the WBNS tower site for a 36" KU Satellite dish! :]

Don't know how (or if) this fits in, but back when 98.8 flipped to Jack there was some talk from pretty credible sources that the flip was in preparation for a sale R1 was working on. If someone does buy, I hope they can find a way to shore up 98.9's coverage of the metro.

Of course, in all seriousness.. I don't see them buying it -- I've been told multiple times they are not looking for a full power signal in this market -- EMF ended up with the former CDR Translator out of fact that Cedarville University wanted/required the network to be sold as one piece.

I don't think the signal can be improved anymore than it has already been in the past.

It would not be surprising to see Radio One exit this market at some point... they still are not doing well "numbers" money wise as a company and I could see them exit this market to make a profit.

Biggest problem is out side of 107.5 and 98.9.. I don't know anyone who would want to pick up 106.3's rim shot signal.

I wonder if that was all part of their master plan? Maybe they were thinking that putting Magic with it's great numbers on a weak signal inflates the value of 106.3?

There was a time, back in the olden days when radio stations still fought for listeners and interacted with listeners. In those days, WCKX Power 106.3 made an impact. Today, that impact would be less, due to options like XM and Iheart and IPods, but it does not need to be as dead as they have allowed it to become. IMHO both 106.3 and moreso 98.9 could be viable, money-making properties with some effort.

As for buyers, don't count Merlin out.

For their sakes I hope they carefully evaluate the signal coverage first, especially if they're planning to keep Jack or do anything other than urban. 98.9 did get some great numbers back when it was Wild Country, but there were no full-coverage country outlets back then, so country-thirsty listeners were probably willing to put up with the suburban deficiencies...until WCOL came along with its "static free" alternative and blew them away.

For the record: I've been reminded that 98.9 was actually "The River" WRVF when it was getting high country shares, before big-signal WCOL flipped to country in Feb 1994. After 98.9 subsequently sank to a 2 share they tried the Wild Country approach, but it never got traction.

What about Emmis buying out a few stations in Columbus?

They're not really in buying mode, are they?  But it would be nice to have them in town.  Even more so Greater Media, and maybe Entercom.  Merlin or Cumulus, not so much.  But if someone is kicking the tires, doesn't a local buyer seem more likely?  Saga (didn't Ed Christian say they were finally ready to consider acquisitions again?), Wilks, or possibly Nabco?

Speaking of 98.9, it's strange how Jack's cume has grown 30% since January (to June), but its 6+ share is stuck back where it started during the 6 months.  The cume has grown at least a little every month during this period, but the share has gone 1.7 -> 2.1 -> 2.1 -> 1.7 -> 1.5 -> 1.5.  Weird.  Sure would be interesting to know the demos.

The listeners generally don't stay long for "Jack" type formats and they usually don't come back as often. Probably dealing with the vast array of music played, some love one song/genre played, hate the next. The cume numbers for WHLK/Cleveland and WDRQ/Detroit are also among the highest in their respective markets, but their AQH numbers are a bit lower.

Interesting. What kind of implications would that have for office listening? Perhaps good ones, because there's a little something for everyone?? But if so maybe that's where they could be hurt most by a signal that is iffier inside suburban offices than in cars?

It is an option for Saga but most likely you'll see a smaller independent group with it. Thank God it won't be Wilks. I've heard from a few sources that Wilks is seeking bank loans though.
