98.9 The Big Talker

Third rate? Really? It wasn't too long ago that someone posted that KTFM PPM is higher one important key demo-"females" compared to Mix and The Beat. In any case, BMP is not going to simulcast KTFM so this convo is irrelevant.

The point I was trying to make is that it would make better sense to have a Chr station and another option than two CC owned stations-KFHI & KPEZ. The simulcast would cost next to nothing.
 
Anyone see other stations in town picking up Beck or any of the other syndie shows that were on the Big Talker?

Not so many. PPMs show streams now, and out of town streams rarely have a big enough enough audience to show up.
 
This was the worst station ever. KLBJ does well in the ratings because they have entertaining local talent like Todd and Don and Jeff Ward. They also have Clark Howard who isn't political. Big Talker had a bunch of nut jobs and that absolutely horrible moved into town hack Sean Rima. Good riddance.
 
Granted...you could turn on at just about any time of day (with the exception of the top of the hour) and it would be guaranteed that you would hear the same old party line.

Nothing to see here, move along and make room for the oldies.
 
The 98.9 frequency isn't entirely jinxed.
During its glory days, La Ley was once rated #1 overall, the first time a Spanish language station hit the top spot in Austin.
 
how long was the other formats on 98.9, i might forget one to two formats the years of the different i/m not sure of when they when they where. and some dj's / local talk personalties

I don't believe "The Hill" was ever contemporary as much as a classic rock variant. I don't remember it that well.

And KHHL was "Exitos" (Hits) before it became "La Ley." I recall hearing D&B on KLBJ talking about how Exitos had smoked them in one book. But Dudley and Bob had the staying power.

BTW-- I wouldn't give Sammy and me too much weight on the Big Talker's success or failure. We were on for one hour a day 12n-1pm for a few months with no outside promotion. They had billboards and vehicle wraps for Glen Beck & Dave Ramsey but not our little program.
 
I like the line about 'filled by paid programming'. This sounds like a blogtalkradio.com kind of thing, good luck to them, almost everything is headed to the net nowadays.
 
98.9 the hill was a short 3-6 months format in 2001. mostly 90's music. i was giving you a plug fred cantu on 98.9 ,sorry. i know that you where on ktbc, kvue and keye. exitos that followed when shamrock comm sold to i think amigo broadcasting that turn into border media. sorry again.
 
KLTD was around until July 4th weekend of 1993 then Zrock KUTZ launched that Saturday afternoon at 6pm. Zrock went but still was a rock format after Zrock went belly up. KHHL The Hill was classic rock station geared more to those who don't like the harder stuff. I believe they their line was "Rock without the hard edge" or something like that.

It sounds like BMP radio took my advice. I shot the PD a email several months back suggesting this!!! Awesome!!! :) :D ;D

This makes so much since here is why.

1. 92.5 in San Marcos, Texas is a Community based talk station
2. 92.5 in Devine, Tx is a Conservative Talker "The Patriot", and
3. both are not powerful frequencies. I like to call them "talk grade as Maxell UR's are for talk and am radio, as Maxell UDI's are for Fm Stereo and Lp recordings in the cassette world."

Gosh, now I am in a pickle on Saturday nights. Hypersonic is what I listen to on Saturday nights on 101x, and they have the Saturday Night Fever broadcasting at the Iron Cactus North on 98.9 so now I am going to have to pick and choose what I am going to listen to. Of course I could record it on my dvd recorder but I will have to buy some cables to record it in the other room, and then play the disc back in the living room when Hypersonic is over. ;D
 
92.5 will become ESPN Deportes, that is not a good move on BMP's part. The market is too saturated for 3 FM sports stations. The first one on 103.1 and the second one on 104.9.

Has a Spanish language station without full city grade coverage done well in Austin without a full powered one close by? It would take a hell of a lot of advertising to promote such a move, and that costs money. A move like this would work in Houston, but not Austin, or even in San Antonio. Usually a full powered FM flips to Spanish language first, and then a lower powered station adjecent to it otherwise as history in Austin has shown it would likely be a flop.

You were referring to KZDC 1250 AM which was Album Rock, Classic Rock, Spanish Talk, and Sports, and then it moved to 103.1 KHHL which once had the KTXX calls if memory serves me right. I still have the KZDC rocks bumper sticker ;D

BMP should put Deportes on 104.9, and The Horn on 92.5 I would think they would get a better audience. If Deportes lands on 92.5 I think it would be a lost cause unless they do a whole lot of advertising for that station, because the average person would not be able to find it unless the scan through the entire FM band.
 
ESPN Deportes is appointment listening. Sports fans seek it out. Plus the host of their one local show in Austin is a one-man media machine. He publishes a local freebie Spanish language sports weekly and he's the 10:00pm sports anchor for the local Telemundo affiliate.
