98.9 to change?

;D I don't know DK, your post was probably better researched... ::)

The website was bought September 4th. When was the Entercom/CBS announcement, the 22nd of August? That's almost 2 full weeks of planning, and research. I get the impression this was a first strike. But going against 2 heritage stations with a fragmented "Jack" format, with little new to offer? This seems to be a cost cutting venture, as much as anything else. This station can do whatever damage without jocks, and the occasional happy meal to the voice gal, for the fine work. 98.9 is a really nice cake, as stations go. Too bad about the DogS*** for frosting, as it is now. For a first strike, it could at least have had some stank on it... CFKane

After listening for a few hours, I gotta agree for now.

"A Jockless KIM with no heritage and unfocused music will not make much of a dent in 100 or 104. A straight ahead, foreground, fun Young Country, could do significant damage to KIX."

Which is why Entercom will do that, and probably soon. Let's just hope there's a little more forethought to it than Kim. Again, if Kim gets her act together and goes after 100, I'd wager a small amount it will be 99.7. If not, it'll be 94.

Better researched than 98.9? It's all guesswork in this biz anyway...right CF? ;D

I honestly think this may have been a major cost-cutting move too. Consider that 103.5 is practically all syndicated at this point, and no jocks at all on 98.9, money may be a concern over on Murray Road. Honestly, 98.1 isn't doing any better than 98.9 was, but they spent a ton of cash on D&Z, so they will give that more time, otherwise... THEY could be next.

Does it seem like, outside of KIX, the entire Citadel cluster is just a group of stations to give the other guys fits...and not set up to win? For example:

98.1=only exists to tick off WEGR.
103.5=only exists to tick off WDIA and KJMS
98.9=used to only exist to tick off K97 and KXHT...now it's WRVR and WMC-FM.

It's not a very well-thought out cluster at all... Heaven forbid anyone go after KIX... ;)

Entercom will protect the TWO cash cows the have now, by going after theirs...I hear a Wolf coming out of the wild...howling soon at 94.1.

You beat me to it...I was wondering if the next phase of radio consolidation will be for each of the big gun corporations to have one or two "franchise" stations in each cluster, with the remainder programmed as cheaply as possible just to nip at the heels of the other competitors' "franchise"...the net result being the radio dial will get even blander and less interesting.

If they had a bit of heritage and some cool jocks they would be FM 100 on the weekend. And that seems like it has been doing alright...

An electic mix done right could work, but there is no focus to this...

98.9 has been a stepchild since it was moved in. It probably made more money and had more listeners when it was in Kennett, MO.

According to the Memphis Business Journal online story, Citadel will be looking for disk jockeys for this station in early 2007. They also have a quote from GM Sherri Sawyer about the station. You might have to subscribe to their online service to view story. I signed up a long time ago and it was free.

After looking at the article closely, I found a funny misprint. It accidently posted one of the other radio stations the company owns here as "WMPW" 98.1, which was 98.9 old call letters.

Well, I feel the need to add my 2-cents. As a 38-year old female, this station does nothing for me that FM 100 &/or WRVR can't already do. And actually, I have yet to have that "oh wow" factor that one expects with a new format. Now grant it, I may not be a P1, but why in the HELL would you add another AC format here? (of course, I said the same thing about adding another urban format when they flipped to Power 99). Why not take it Country, then you have all those dollars coming in to the same building as Entercom will soon do? Ughhh, and I agree on the imaging. :p

I heard a sweeper this morning that began "It might sound crazy ..."

No, it doesn't sound crazy .. it IS crazy.

Anybody who thinks there is even a niche audience for this Bay-City-Rollers-into-Kanye-West nonsense needs to be drug tested.

This is the dumbest local radio move since "Progressive" Talk 680 thought Leon Gray was going to deliver big afternoon ratings. "Hey Mike Fleming, we're coming to get you" was the battle cry. How's that working out?

It just goes to show that sometimes the emperors (or empresses) are not wearing clothes.

They aren't doing a 'format' They are trying to take away a few points from Entercom as cheaply as possible. 10 bucks says they don't ever hire an air staff unless by some miracle "Kim" makes some big inroads...then again, if Kim works jockless, they may not see the need to hire airstaff.....

Cheap is the operative word here *sigh*

That's the deal. Methinks they bit off more than they could chew with the ABC purchase, and they are going to cut corners EVERYWHERE. When is D&Z's contract up, by the way? They may need to start sweating...

According to allaccess.com, KIX106 PD Lance Tidwell adds PD duties at Kim 98.9 and afternoon host Wendy Williams exits.
