98 Rock

I'm not hating on 98 Rock, I kind of like 98 Rock. I just think there is some veracity to the 970 to 97.9 rumors. I think it will eventually happen because older generations will continue to listen to terrestrial radio broadcasts long after younger generations have completely abandoned it.

Anyway, 98 Rock is cool, it sounds just like WEBN... and I like WEBN... so that's cool. The imaging is a little immature and pukey, but the music selection could be worse... I guess...

Please, don't mess with the Mighty 98 Rock. Well deserved #'s and great insight from Biggy Riggy. Station sounds great, keep up the good work.

In my scenario, 98 Rock would stay intact. It would be available out of Riverview instead of Holiday. Theoretically, a better signal.

you're right XTB is dead...#1 Men 18-49, Men 25-49, Men 25-54 & Men 35-54 today...but again we don't know what we're doing and have not for yeeeeeaaaaaarrrrssssssss....so I must not really still work here. We play GREAT Rock songs that are huge with a large demo. From Boston to Volbeat and Five Finger Death Punch to Lynyrd Skynyrd. This is the same kinda stuff when signed on in 1990 playing the Cars and Metallica, Poison to Led Zeppelin on the same station. Those legendary songs are not going to die because the next generation introduces their kids to them and so on. We were the mighty 100,000 watt mother back then with great rock songs and lots of good stuff in between. That's who we are whether you want to admit it or not....

I'm early 30's. Listened to 98 Rock since I was a youngster. they used to have "personalities" as Dj's back when, I remember Rikker (or somethign liek that) was on the 7-10 for quite some time, I thought he was a horses ass even as a 15 year old but apparently he got ratings. Now, all the DJ's on 98 sound like fresh out of school (or in school) youngsters with no pipes, telling me about the latest stupid person headline on yahoo. ---- that, give me rock.
Well, I take that back, forgot about the Big Rig, I don't usually listen midday, which is when I believe he is on. Big Rig has been there just about forever I think
My wife likes 97x, and we drive in together in the mornings to work. Seth and Drew can be entertaining (although Seth/Boy has NO pipes whatsoever) but just as was the problem even years ago when Fisher was still on, every other song is freakin' Sublime or Red Hot Chili Peppers. Makes me change to sports talk on 98.7 or 620, is what it does.
As I posted, I was not complaining about 98 Rock song choices, they actually mix it up a bit and finally have learned not to play Metallica every fourth song. I am complaining about 97x's playlist, which is very repetitive compared to 98 Rock

Well said Rig! People have been writing off XTB since we signed on and they've been wrong ever since!

Heard BigRig on WTKS Real Radio 104.1 in Orlando. They play classic rock on the weekends. He sounded great!!!

Are you sure Real Radio 104.1 isn't simply passing along the Classic Rock station off iHeart Radio? I believe Big Rig is on that station which also airs 24/7 on 103.5 HD2, locally imaged as "Thunder".

Most (if not all?) of the weekenders on 104.1 are from other stations. Dayton, OH... and other places... Google the names and you'll see their weekend hosts in a few other markets too.

yeah 104.1 uses different talent on the weekends. its a different approach than the tampa stations do, but at some points, i just wonder, who the hell is listening to the radio at 6, 7, 9, 11 in the am on a saturday or sunday? other than driving in my car, not at all...

Explains why I'm listening to "Bobby's B-100" right now and not terrestrial radio.

I have more relate-ability to that on-line station than I do to the OTA's.

Life goes on.

98 Rock is the only Rock station in Tampa Bay.. that's why they are #1 in them areas (if true). 97X is horrible.

98 Rock won't go away anytime soon cause they have no real competition music wise.

98 Rock though would get their butts kicked if another Rock station did come to Tampa and played

more of the "New" Active Rock songs instead of playing same old-same old songs... and mix in top

songs from back in the day that we don't hear that often.

Listen, I and we get it.... you play recognizable music and music you "So called Sample".. but that is Really What Kills.

Where do these samples come from? Call ins? If they know you will play Sublime... they will call in for it.. If they know

you will play, say, Firehouse "Don't treat me bad" people will call in for it.. but you don't!

Point is, your sample that you do and other stations do, in any music format, isn't what works.

What works is "New Music" People that tune in 20 minutes on their way to and back from work, that they want to hear, is "New Music" from their band or a new band that's out there... or a song that they remember hearing but isn't played hardly at all Anywhere!

That's what makes a Rock station great music wise... New Music (not same old songs over and over again cause they are recognizable) and songs you just don't hear anymore but were big in the 80s,90s-00s

Go ahead and say I'm wrong... but as a Listener... that's what I want to hear when I turn on the radio.. nothing is worse that hearing the same damn songs day in and day out on the radio cause rock stations think it's safe to play.! shhheeeeshhh

You may not totally grasp how remarkable it is for any station to be #1 in men across that wide an age range. Typically new music stations will only do well 18-34, and classic rock will only do well 25-54 or 35-54. Plus 25-54 is impacted by sports stations, news/talk, even A/C as some guys age out of rock n' roll.

Would a good competitor maybe force them to focus a little in one direction or the other? Maybe.

But your "new music" prescription, in my mind at least, only works for half of 98's audience. With a few exceptions, a lot of older guys are more caught up in jobs and family, and don't have time to "discover" new bands. They just want to hear songs they like.

And I'll leave the "what works" comment alone, except to say that they're already #1, how much better would something else work? They don't care about the 6+ number.. for that number to be better, given what they are already achieving with men, they would have to be drawing women, latinos, african-americans and seniors, which are never rock listeners.

Never say never, especially Latinos & women. If that was the case, "Nickelback" would not be on the air, as women rockers seem to be the ones carrying that band.

I am SOOOOOOOOOO glad I started this thread. I love the Mighty 98 Rock but would also like to see another 100 KW go after them. Competition is always good!!!

I don't know what you people are smokin but WE DO have 2 competitors still. The Eagle is STRONG and 97x back in the first year of the PPM was VERY Strong. People put waaaay too much stock in signal. If you give them something they must have they find a way to get it. 97x is on our tower for cryin out loud. It's too funny cause we're always the after thought....ALWAYS.

Scott you're more of a broken record than anything I'll ever play on 98rock so whatever ;)

At this point in my life I will tell you this, I live, eat and breath this station PERIOD and I will do everything in my power to CRUSH YOU :-*
