980 Wtix in WS

Well after a month of some kind of Gospel music (which I'm surprized no-one on this ever so smart radio board has mentioned) today I'm hearing 'Centerfield' over and over again with only an ID in-between on 980khz in WS. wTIX - Centerfield. Gee what could that add up to?

Sounds like a smart creative move to me to launch a sports station ... but it is AM ... honestly ... do people listen to AM ??? Ratings in all demos tell me NO ONE except 65+.

Hit one out of the ball park WTIX good Luck.

Anybody have any perdictions for the new book coming out this week?

Maybe Billy Prim is buying or leasing it to be the flagship for a Warthogs broadcast!

Of course, no noticed, because no one listens!

WELCOME ESPN 980, YOUR HOME FOR (the herd, mike and mike, tirico and van pelt, etc.)

Well from the faint signal I am getting out here on South Elm Eugene it appears the flip has occured, isn't this frequency owned by GHB who also own The Ball?

WAAA now WTIX has a poor signal. Never a factor in Greensboro because poor coverage. Can't see any positives on the format change since no one can hear it or cares.

R&R reports "GHB Broadcasting officials confirm that gospel WTIX-AM/Winston Salem has flipped to sports as an ESPN Network affiliate, featuring the entire ESPN Radio network lineup. The company already owns sports WBLO-AM in the market, but officials declined to comment on why they added a second sports station to their cluster."

I see nothing posted on the balls website about the change, interesting.

My main question is: Will there be any local content, and if so can this content be simucast on both stations? If so then this might just be something that may not be half bad, but those cats have got to start bringing in some consistent advertising income. I used to work at 1590 so I know how tough selling stations of the ilk and size of 790/980 can be, but at least we had some local advertising. I do not think 790 has had more than two or three at a time in the three plus years they have been on the air. Honestly I wonder just how they stay with the format considering how poor this station seems to perform.

Then again it has been so long since this area has had any local sports talk of real interest (Matt & TJ) that it may be too late to build up enough buzz to make this worthwhile. That is why I think 1590 struggled, ok that and a signal and dial location which left quite a bit to be desired. Then again it always seemed that 1590 was just killing time before the Doc unloaded the station.

It doesn't matter how good the syndicated programming may be, if there is not a sound local anchor to dock the ship with the ship will drift without direction, look at what happened to the ticket once Matt & TJ got axed.

Of course there is one man who I think could revive local sports talk in the Triad... any guesses as to whom that might be???? And would GHB have the testicular fortitude to bring him back to this market?

As for why a second sports channel - think coverage!

790 covers the south of the Greensboro market. 980 covers the west. Greensboro is still not covered.

(Coverage means I can listen at places other than my car!)

If GBH was smart, they would develop one sports station, and put it on the signals necessary to cover the market. I think a local afternoon show (3 or 4-7) could be a big draw and lead in to evening play by play.

I still think there could be some Winston-Salem baseball input into the 980 move. Warthogs (or whatever they will be called next season) will have some buzz and a new stadium. I suspect there is a strong desire to have a radio presence.

ESPN 980

Do you think a simulcast would work with 790, 980 and 98.3? I know 790 and 98.3 are both licensed to Thomasville, but the FM could help at night.

The red circles of the "Predicted" coverage may be close to accurate. Problem is, not enough people live within the red circle to make it competitive.

Yes, I think 980, 790 as a simulcast would be better than trying to have two separate stations. As for 98.3 added to the mix, I think they could fill in some gaps in the western half of the market, but not sure about Alamance.

My choice would be to find a stronger Greensboro signal to add to the mix. Simulcast them except for possibly to more localized play by play in the evenings and on weekends.

I believe that for any sports station to survive in this area it has to include Greensboro with a solid signal. I listen to 790 a lot especially in the afternoon when the Packman show is on but as soon as the sun goes down the signal is lost and I live on the west side of Greensboro. You will have to have a solid signal in order to carry evening sporting events. 790's signal is lost in Greensboro on most days before the Atlanta Braves baseball games begin and I see no way they could carry college basketball with low power after dark. I think Greensboro really wants a good sports station and it could be successful if it programmed correctly.

You are so right! Without fulltime coverage of the two major counties in the metro, forget being competitive in the ratings battle and go looking for some old-time sellers.

When and why did the WTIX call letters leave New Orleans???
