99.9?

I'm not sure I understand the concept of "stunting". Why would a radio station who claim they are going to be "Sports Talk" play Classic Rock? Is there a "study" where folks who like Classic Rock also like Sports Talk?

I would be very angry if I liked the Classic Rock (or whatever genre is played), and all of a sudden Sports Talk is on.
I would not think a format like Sports Talk would require stunting. If I were a Program Director, or Station Manager (or a Carpenter ;) ), I would want to build a loyal audience right away.

Thanks,
Stuart

Classic Rock and Sports Talk do go after the same audience.

I agree about your stunting. There was no stunting when 101.1 flipped to talk. I remember hearing a bunch of people in the studio kinda partying, then the computer served music up until 5am (IIRC) when the news started talking.

I agree that a loyal audience should be built from the beginning. However, I think this means going all out from the launch (think "The Wolf" vs. "The Rooster"). But let's face it, 99.9 has beating a dead horse for the better part of about two weeks now. Whether they should have continued the beating (until morale improved :D) or gone with a stunt until they were ready to bust out of the gates is a tough call.

In my opinion: stunting is a technique that only gets inside radio people excited. The average listener gets nothiing from this. Radio people do a lot of things to impress themselves which is totally lost on the listener. Only if the stunt was a week long contest directly involving the listener (like a contest where you vote for the next format of the station) would you get any 'play' out of it.

In the past I have heard from many of my 'average listener' friends who have heard past stunts on a station and said, "I couldn't figure out what in the world was going on so I just turnned it off and didn't bother with it again." More or less those were the words and thoughts.

I just hope this station does a lot of live sports. I have loved having national college football double headers and the NFL the last couple of weekends and look forward to more Hurricanes this winter. Picking up the Orioles or the Braves would be amazing next summer.

I still wish Durham/Raleigh could have a station like KQV in Pittsburgh. All news with When Radio Was overnights.

Another obstacle for a station that will be called "The Fan" is what kind of stunt loop they could have come up with with the word "fan" in it; last summer when WFMX died and became Kiss, they ran a stunt loop of song clips and voice blurbs centered around the word "Kiss." Then, when Sunny 93.9 became a different flavor of Kiss, Chris Shebel incorporated that same "Kiss" loop into a bigger and longer stunt loop. When WRDU became The Rooster, that stunt loop ran a clip of Alice in Chains's "Rooster", interspersed with rooster sounds.

They could have put a fan up to a microphone...

OTOH, they could have gone with a sports-themed stunting, rather than by the station name. Fight songs, songs they play at sporting events, etc.

Hey naytchrboy,

I went to school in Clarion, Pennsylvania (about 1 1/2 hours north of Pittsburgh) in the early '80s. I listened to KDKA all of the time...Jack Bogut (than John Cigna), Trish Beatty, Roy Fox, Perry Marshall etc...

I now live in Chapel Hill and most nights I would listen to Perry Marshall and the early part of John Cigna and the "K" Team. This was when KDKA was a good station ;D... Not the "Mix Of Nothing" they have become :'(

My point is...I can still pick up KDKA on most nights (although there is no reason to!). Some nights I could pick up 1410 KQV.

Or you can scrap the above, and just listen on line! :)

Thanks,
Stuart

Although I know how rumors are treated in the message board community, this one does hold some weight. 99.9 is looking at some local "talent", athletes from UNC and NC State to take over their talk shows in the afternoon. Also, it seems they have tapped the DC market for one of their shows as well. Having an FM Sports Talk station in the triangle with hosts with first hand knowledge of the local College environment with experience at the pro level HAS to be a good thing. Look for something early in October, if not sooner.

??? I was in the area over the weekend and tuned in 99.9..Not sure if I was listening to the right station or not..They were running some K-Love Crap..all weekend..This does not fit what any of this thread has talked about? Was this the station?

As far as I know, K-Love didn't take over 99.9; I believe the local K-Love affiliate is WKVE 106.7. I know the Durham Bulls games Saturday were aired on 99.9 to make way for Duke football on 620 The Bull, but as for the stunting, I understand the music is classic rock.

K-Love was definately on Saturday morning and also late Saturday on 99.9 and I was on I-85 near Durham

Perhaps you were picking up W260BG, High Point, a translator for WKVE on 99.9 FM. WKVE hasanother 99.9 FM translator in Winston-Salem, W260BK.

If one goes to www.wral.com and clicks on "Sports", at the top of the Sports Page is a banner which says...

99.9 The Fan....Sportsradio coming in October!

If this is the case, I do not understand why Classic Rock is still being played. Play some "Best of's". I would hope the shows they will carry, could supply something for them to play to start building an audience.
So to put this in perspective....Folks who like their music (like myself) are in for a big disappointment come October  Is this an ethical thing to do? It sounds like the old "Bait & Switch" Scam ;) Hmmmmmmmmmmm....

I have been listening to 99.9 more than the other stations the last few days.

It would be nice if they would drop in a couple of sports-sounding hints every now and then.
It does seem a little misleading, but then again, it's a "stunting."
[Parenthetical question: Does that phrase "stunting" come from the football play where a defensive player "stunts" on an offensive lineman when they are rushing the quarterback, or somewhere else?] Because it seems like that is what 99.9FM is trying to do right now, throwing up some razzledazzle play to confuse the listeners then trying to hit them with something different. Or maybe they will end up playing classic rock when they aren't playing their local talk show(s) or ballgames?? There doesn't seem to be a need for another national sports network in Raleigh-Durham, so maybe they will have time to fill when their local show or two isn't on....

You are giving them too much credit. They weren't even close to announcing the format change but their hand was forced because of internal leaks. Nothing was in place except Hurricanes and State but the whole market knew about the change. Becauses they were no longer able to sell ads on the country format they had no choice but to cut and run. The music is a half-good idea to at least get men punching around to stop at 99.9 for a song or two. Stuart is dead on with the "Best of" idea but they still don't have a network to get "best of" from. Bottom line: if you thought they f----d up a golden opportunity with country (and they sure did), wait until you see the absolute disaster they create in sports. It's hard to believe these people are soo good at television and so stupid in radio.

Yeah I was going off on a tangent there with the "stunting" thing.
I really can't see how they would do sports around here with Sporting News Radio or all local hosts and ballgames and make any difference/money, but here's watching....
