Classic Rock and Sports Talk do go after the same audience.Stuart Greenberg said:I'm not sure I understand the concept of "stunting". Why would a radio station who claim they are going to be "Sports Talk" play Classic Rock? Is there a "study" where folks who like Classic Rock also like Sports Talk?
I would be very angry if I liked the Classic Rock (or whatever genre is played), and all of a sudden Sports Talk is on.
I would not think a format like Sports Talk would require stunting. If I were a Program Director, or Station Manager (or a Carpenter), I would want to build a loyal audience right away.
Thanks,
Stuart

Radio people do a lot of things to impress themselves which is totally lost on the listener. Only if the stunt was a week long contest directly involving the listener (like a contest where you vote for the next format of the station) would you get any 'play' out of it.
In the past I have heard from many of my 'average listener' friends who have heard past stunts on a station and said, "I couldn't figure out what in the world was going on so I just turnned it off and didn't bother with it again." More or less those were the words and thoughts.

Then, when Sunny 93.9 became a different flavor of Kiss, Chris Shebel incorporated that same "Kiss" loop into a bigger and longer stunt loop. When WRDU became The Rooster, that stunt loop ran a clip of Alice in Chains's "Rooster", interspersed with rooster sounds.
