99.9?

Although I know how rumors are treated in the message board community, this one does hold some weight. 99.9 is looking at some local "talent", athletes from UNC and NC State to take over their talk shows in the afternoon. Also, it seems they have tapped the DC market for one of their shows as well. Having an FM Sports Talk station in the triangle with hosts with first hand knowledge of the local College environment with experience at the pro level HAS to be a good thing. Look for something early in October, if not sooner.

WRAL is breaking the story now....

??? Don't know about that and don't know about WRAL. I'm in Jax right now.. What about local athletes taking money to talk about Sports..I'm sure they will get paid and I'm sure that is a violation of ACC if not NCAA rules.. If they do this on a regular basis, Methinks "There're Pro's.. I still say.. Take it with a grain of salt if you wish! "Little Yellow Bird"

Quick questions,

Would a Television Station (WRAL) assist in a Radio Stunt ??? If so, it seems very unprofessional
If ESPN Radio failed around here a few years ago, why would it be tried again ???

Hmmp! The RAL crew might do anything...2. Why would anyone in their "Right" mind put anymore sports on in this market.. "You" go figure, I know! Thanks APE!

Hey APE, How 'bout back then when we had to "cover" the live feed from the games??? If you didn't dial that pot down, the guy calling the game was gonna say "GD!", it was a lock!

I don't think so, especially not WRAL. It would damage their credibility.

Isn't 99.9 owned by Capital Broadcasting? I know WRAL is.
Capitol Broadcasting owns 99.9, 101.5, WRAL-TV, and WRAZ in the Raleigh-Durham area. They also own a couple TV stations in Charlotte and one LP-TV in Wilmington.

;D Ya Right Sniff..Of course, I usulayy let it slid on..Hell, I was "Drunk anyway" and figured had no listerners... Never got any calls either... Sorta like.."Hey I'll take the 9th caller to win blah blah blah and only get two calls, Hope that one called back to get some tape and give away a 6 pack of frigging Sundrop or some other BS!.. "Those were the Days, Friend"!

Since they hired an ex-NC State football player, ya think they need to add a former UNC athlete? ;) That would balance things out at Capital, since the soccer mom Mix 101.5 is now the flagship of the wolfpack.

Careful, 99.9 the fan, there are a lot of Carolina fans in the area, ya might want to consider your potential audience. ::)

As always I am confused ??? ??? ???
Is this station going to be "Sportsradio"? "Classic Rock"? "Liberal Talk"? or a new format each month ???

Take UNC games away from 106.1 and let them get a better hold on their country audience? Talk about rubbing salt in the wound...

What really didn't make sense was moving Carolina to 106.1 (from 100.7) in the first place. 100.7 has the more powerful signal...

;D No! What really makes sense is to forget all about the "Sports Gig" and move on.. (Ha..Gotcha, Not Moving on) but some good rock and roll!

except the big wig is a state dude and so is his wife..its his station..I hope he has fun and it works for him..a personal I-Radio-Pod.

Has a combination SportRadio/Classic Rock (or other music) Format ever been tried? Could something like that work in this (or any) market ??? SportsRadio could be the main format, and Classic Rock could be added where needed.

With the exception of Rock-92, Does the Triangle have a Classic Rock Station? "The River" seems to play some, but I would say they are more Classic "Hits". (Rock-92, comes in fairly well here in Durham/Chapel Hill)

Didn't 850 The Buzz play some classic rock at the top of the hour and for a few hours here and there when they first went to sports?

I remember it was around that year when all the news and talk stations were programming home improvement/mechanics/gardening shows on Saturday mornings that none of which exist these days?

Quad,
I may be wong, before "The Buzz" changed to sports, they were 850-KIX (before KIX went to FM). By that time they were playing what I think the term is "Reel to Reel" Music of the late 50's, 60's, and 70's. There were no DJ's, only drop in's. When they first changed to "The Buzz", they still kept some of that music until they were able to work out the kinks with the SportsRadio concept. After that, the music was stopped.

Yeah it was a short term thing when they finished nailing down the sports schedule 24/7.
But I was thinking it was some kind of classic rock they played. I just thought of them when the subject of classic rock mixed with sports was brought up. :)

Stuart may be onto something! There is a great deal of commonality between the core demo for sports and classic rock.

Forget play by play for a moment. Those broadcasts, particularly of the college games, are strictly targeted at fans of the school - not sports fans! And of course, you can't carry all of the colleges, so pick one that makes sense.

Now, for the combination of classic rock and sports talk - that, IMHO, is where the commonality exists. But hosts need to be versed in all sports and be willing to talk racing and wrestling!
