99 X Is Back

Just saw the earlier posts regarding currents and recurrents. InsideRadio quoted Brian Phillips, who indicated "more recent music" will be integrated into 99X's playlist later this year.

That same article indicated Rock 100.5 had only a 1.8 share in Men 25 to 54 in its final full survey. Ouch. 99X has tripled that share.

So only one show weekdays; mornings. I wonder who takes Axel's slot and who are the other jocks are filling in the other slots.

Didn't he oversee the launch? Last time I saw, it was doing alright. Could you do any better?

I could've outprogrammed him with one arm tied behind my back as far as Rock 100.5 is concerned! His tenure as that station's PD was a disaster.

I'm in full agreement that 99X sounds good so far.

Here is the InsideRadio article for those interested:

WMKP is a LPFM on 98.9 in Oakwood...

I had Duluth or Lawrenceville in mind in terms of a potential relocation. Would that allow sufficient separation to be maintained? I am unsure. I also am unsure what other frequencies may be open.

In my part of the country, there is an LPFM and a translator on 96.7 MHz less than 10 or 12 miles apart from one another (the translator is highly directional).

HD is back on today. No drops at all as I drove all over Gwinnett today. Several drops before. Description changed from “99X - the Original” to simply “HD1.” Does this mean they are back on the main antenna?

Not sure the introduction of "new rock" is a good idea. It's failed both times when tried in Atlanta, rather spectacularly. The core audience is reacting to the current mix, which is 70's-90's "alt rock" and new wave. What passes for "new rock" is a different beast altogether. It may be ok to feature it in a specialty show, but not as part of the regular playlist.
I don't know, because a lot of people in the comments while positive, there's also many who miss new music. 99X I don't know much of pre-rebrand besides it mostly being some of the lamer picks of modern alternative but they had some solid ones too like Soccer Mommy. And the LocalX show didn't seem bad, local artists is always important for a market.

We'll see what they add instead of garbage like Imagine Dragons, Boywithuke, etc... alternative was never just rock, just mostly, and there's still a bunch of perfect indie going on that fits alternative... Boygenius, Yves Tumor, Murder Capital...

I don't know I just don't want to see alternative become all oldies, and not even varied with it like 99X and 91X kinda lack at most of the time besides some goodies here and there. Yes, playing hits are important, always will be, BUT there should be fun with it, maybe a request show, maybe just dropping stuff, idk something interesting because people are just gonna stream all the stuff they heard in the past if it's so limited. And alternative never died and a lot of good stuff gets ignored all the time.

Very good hire. I wonder if he will pick up PD stripes, or if he will continue in his role at SXM? A number of folks out there have worked - or currently work - at SXM and terrestrial radio simultaneously.

I'd be surprised if he bolts from SXM.

SiriusXM has been jettisoning veteran employees for the past month or so. Salary dump in progress, so maybe he's already a dead man walking there.

It’s sort of a risk to leave a lengthy career with a company the size of SXM for a reincarnated start up in the Atlanta market with Cumulus. If he did, I’d assume he felt his time at SXM was almost up.

It's been announced Will will be handling 3p to 7p weekday afternoons plus APD chores.

It is unclear who the PD is or will be. Will Brian Phillips be handling those duties himself, or will Steve Craig perhaps be brought on board?

I've been pitching the SF Bay Area board the reboot idea that 105.3 SF could potentially welcome a whole bunch of hosts "home" via voice tracking. It might require a local PD/Ops mgr who remembers the music and vibe of the old Live 105 and could craftily put the pieces back together. IMHO, that person would not be impossible to find! And yo Audacy: It could all be "budget conscious" yet effective. And perhaps create enough buzz to make advertisers forget about Disastrous Dave FM.

Meanwhile Dave FM continues with their random play-what-we-want format which must be pleasing Earth Mom Annie from The Sunset, but who else?

I know, "but it's cheap to run."

I'm not willing to call Dave FM a disaster yet. The most recent survey has shown signs of life. I noticed the station is devoting a higher percentage of spins to 80s songs than previously; perhaps that has helped.

Live 105 / Alt 105.3 posted mostly drab ratings for the final 10 to 15 years of its existence. I suspect 105.3 had no place on many listeners' presets in the Bay Area for many years.

Perhaps some former 94.5 Bay FM listeners have recently discovered KITS.

I bet Steve has some form of "non-compete" with 97.1 as does most of the of the on air talent in this market. I don't know if it includes programing too. I find it amazing in a "right to work state" that these non compete hold up in court, unless there is some kind of big payment for the lost wages.* According to a couple of folks on this board, he and Cox could not agree on the money so either his outside stuff pays the bills and he doesn't have to put up with the hassles corporate radio, or Cumulus Atlanta has become a much better place $$$ to work since the Dickies left.

* personal advice: Pay a Lawyer to read it before you sign! Not 3 years later like I did. To quote Gomer Pyle: "Surprise Surprise Surprise".

It'd also be interesting to know about the environment at Cox Radio since the Coxes sold out to Apollo.
