_______ Still Sounds Good On The Radio

Ed Trefzger said:
"Respect" by Aretha Franklin
"Go All The Way" by The Raspberries
"Brass In Pocket" by The Pretenders (if indeed you do hear it!)

YES! and may I say a nice variety!

Overplayed. Played it myself thousands of times. Heard in multiple formats. But still NEVER fails to get the "crank it" gene fired up:

Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC

 Allright who let the kids in here with their Iggy Pop and their AC/DC. Oh and get off my lawn!

Challenging "Satisfaction" as the greatest Top 40 song of all time, (either with talkover or following TM Uptempo Jingle Number 3 on Grey Fidelipac) :

The Spencer Davis Group, "Give Me Some Lovin'"

Again, no talk-up to the vocal, except for Jack... Armstrong, not the radio station... and Berns. Go for the "Hey" on the intro.

I always liked the red "Stereo" Fidelipacs...and in later years...Scotchcarts/ITC Carts. You could practically throw them across the studio (like one of my old PDs used to do) and they'd bounce right back. And right now, on one of those red Fidelipacs...filled with "hot tape":

Duran Duran - "Hungry Like The Wolf"...the 5:14 version that's since disappeared off the face of the earth.

Just trying to stay true to the timeframe when it was played as a current on KB, WABC, WLS and WYSL (or WNIA which had one or two hokey "WNIA 123" jingles.) ;D Like a lot of jocks, I've played it from Vinyl 45 (as a Power Gold) on Russco and QRK turntables with MicroTrack tonearms; GoldCart and ScotchCart (ITC single play and triple decks); CD (GoldDisc and Greatest Hits) and wav. Sounded good on every platform, mono or stereo, sign of a great song. Wazzup with PDs who throw carts... thought that was reserved for morning show primadonnas and stressed out production guys (usually Friday afternoon between 4 and 7 p.m.) Pretty hard to throw a wav file against the wall.

The PD in question didn't last long...he ended up out of the business and became a funeral director, although I'd heard a rumor years later that we was back in radio a few states away. Can't diss him too much: he gave me my first full-time gig.

Morning show primadonnas and stressed-out production directors...I've dealt with the former (although I trust I didn't come off as one when I did the AM show) and spent many years as the latter. When I left my current station in 2004 it was still all carts and CDs, except for a VoxPro and Instant Replay 360. When I returned 3 1/2 years later (those years were out of radio entirely) it was all Audio Vault. I felt like it was Christmas, gotta love .wav files! No excuse now for not doing a killer break every time...not that I do...there's just no excuse.

And "Rock The Casbah"...especially the single remix...still sounds great on the radio!

With a killer intro that sounds great coming out of the TOH ID; Shotgun #3; Transition Slow to Fast #1 or for your best :03 Positioning Liner and talk-up, I submit for your consideration, The Undisputed Truth, "Smiling Faces, Sometimes" (Take my advice I'm only trying to school ya'.) As Linc Hayes might say, "Solid!" (Under 40 readers asks, "Who the hell is Linc Freakin' Hayes?")

Hahahahaha...If you're going to feed your horse, what's cheaper than straw? "HEY"...Best talk up one liner ever?

I think you just started a sub-thread. BTW, didn't we hear you use that bit a few times... ahem. How about rolling the Human Beinz "Nobody But Me" and walking up to the vocal with, Before the show, I asked my boss for a raise and he told me "No, no, no, no....." -Rimshot! Gray Fildeipac. Savage, you're on the clock. We're waiting.

I used to like to intro that song by saying here's the soundtrack of my date last night. javascript:void(0);

Even though it was 39 years ago, anytime I hear that song I'll ALWAYS hear in my subconscious...

...all sing along now...

"Smiling Faces listen to...Double-You Kay-Bee Double-You, canyoudigit!"

And I admit, "Maggie May"'s Pop-Top is even more ingrained in my brain. Playing it as a power gold at various stations over years and years did nothing to help. Neither did the last 21 years as a Country Music personality.

Joey Reynolds...if you ever happen upon this thread, thank you. And thanks for the howl that was the last nine months of "Kay Cue Vee". http://14kqv.cjb.net/

Although I haven't heard it on the radio in years..."Don't Pull Your Love" by Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds would still sound great on the air.

"Green Onions" By Booker T & The MGs." Used it for a theme song for years and never tired of it even when it was pounded into my ears on too many TV spots.

There ain't much that Booker T, Steve Cropper, and the Stax band released that isn't a pleasure to hear. They might not get the press that Motown got/gets, but they delivered the goods.

Talk about Jones, Jackson, Cropper and Dunn not getting enough credit, I always thought the Motown musicians, who were labeled "Hitsville U.S.A.," identified with the music business while the Stax crew identfied with the heart of the music using "Soulsville U.S.A." as their slogan.

They were even scheduled to play at the prestigiuos Woodstock weekend but declined because of Al Jackson, Jr.'s fear of flying in the shuttle helicoptor.

Joni Mitchell had a similiar experience spending the weekend in a New York hotel watching the concert reports on TV, writing "Woodstock."

So.... how about a thread dedicated to songs we still enjoy hearing on the radio. Songs you've heard at least three hundred times but still work for you, still have that magic.

______________________________________________________

Talking about "Magic," I stole this walk-up from my good friend Jim Pastrick. It uses the :10 lead-in to "Heart's" "Magic Man."

It can sound as innocent as a baby's giggle or as oily as The Greasman's patented squat.

"Remember, it's not the length of the wand that pulls the rabbit out of the hat but the magic in the performer!""

p.s.
Forget about the giggle. Like our political rapscallions; I mis-spoke.

Doctor My Eyes by Jackson Browne. Hadn't heard it in a while and it sounded great, especially that guitar bridge. Heard it yesterday on Q-107.

One song that still rocks (from an unexpected source); Hey Ya, by Outkast. (Also a really entertaining video...)

Deacon Blues - Steely Dan

crank it up, use the steering wheel as a percussion instrument and wait for it to end. A song to make people wonder why you're just sittin' in your driveway for the past five minutes doin' nothin'.
