_______ Still Sounds Good On The Radio

One song that still rocks (from an unexpected source); Hey Ya, by Outkast. (Also a really entertaining video...)

Absolutely! And from earlier in 2003: "Crazy in Love" by Beyonce & Jay-Z.

Hip-hop didn't do a lot for me before that...but working off an old Chi-Lites groove that kinda sounded like Sam & Dave turned upside down...it sucked me in...

Deacon Blues - Steely Dan

crank it up, use the steering wheel as a percussion instrument and wait for it to end. A song to make people wonder why you're just sittin' in your driveway for the past five minutes doin' nothin'.

Bill

....and another steering-wheel-as-a-percussion-instrument tune from the Dan,
My Old School

GT

That works. You really want "steering wheel percussion?" (Great metaphor, BTW) How about 'Jump Into The Fire' by Harry Nilsson.

"Cold As Ice" - Foreigner. Must be the single mix, with strings added in for extra drama.

When Will I See You Again, Three Degrees.

Great radio AC record.

Not for me...I still hear it on WABC, reverberating thru that entry-door-sized vocal plate...as Dan Ingram comes on to backsell...that's what I'll always think of when I hear that song.

And if you're a REALLY hard-core radio geek...the story of the legendary vocal plate can be faound at this link, 'bout 1/2 way down the page...

G-l-o-r-i-a ... the hit version by Shadows of Night, the obscure version by Them, featuring Van Morrison or the carnal knowledge version by The Doors featuring Jim Morrison. Hat trick!

Wasn't sure whether to post this in the Burnouts thread or this one. Maybe because it was such a great song and today was sunny and warm, it just seemed to fit: "Summer In the City" by the Lovin' Spoonful.

"Son of a Preacher Man" by Dusty Springfield.

"I Fought the Law" by Bobby Fuller Four.

Ever do a back-to-back play of the versions by Them and by Shadows of Night?

Did that once in my embryonic rock-jock days in Ithaca, NY, asking listeners to pick their fave of the two. Phones stayed lit up and I promised to play the winner before the end of the show. Got down to 6-7 minutes from the end, my last stop-set was done, and wouldn't you know it--it came out in a flatfooted tiie. So I just announced the dead heat and ended it with another back-to-back play, had just enough time to get 'em both in before the next jock took over. Everyone seemed to like it.

Wonder how it would have gone if we'd had the Morrison version in the record library at the time (I'm sure they have it by now) and thrown it into the mix too?

I can't believe I haven't burned out on this after 34 years, but it still sounds mighty fine on the car stereo: "Saturday Night Special" - Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Another memory eternally associated with, uh, well, you know...one of your former employers, Jim.

I'll add one much newer and maybe already mentioned on another thread...but while in Syracuse a few months back I heard 93Q play the Evanescence hit "Bring Me To Life"...one of the best records of the past decade.

How about Steve Marriott of "Humble Pie" with "30 Days In The Hole" from 1972?"

or

"Blue Oyster Cult" With "Cities Aflame With Rock and Roll?"

For this weekend especially, I'm thinkin' "Back In The USA." Your choice: the original by Chuck Berry or Linda Ronstadt's remake.

Or maybe this outstanding live version featuring both. Great pipes, great axe, great band. And doesn't one of the guitarists look like George Harrison... just a little? Happy Fourth. Savor the day!

Outstanding indeed!

A great one-hit wonder from the late 70s, "Driver's Seat". Happy 4th weekend to all! :)

Ahh, great memory from '79 by Sniff and the Tears. About that same time came another now-obscure cut from Flash in the Pan: "Walking in the Rain" (this received perhaps one week of airplay on album-rock radio!)
