a big miss for cox

Several items: One - AM formats on FM have not worked all that well unless they have Rush AND a superlative signal: look at 96.5 in Cincy (not strong in KY). WHIO-FM's is not that hot in the 'burbs south and east of Dayton. Two - Cox had nothing to do with the founding of WPTW - especially not the FM, as the city grades of WPTW-FM and WHIO-FM would have overlapped - not legal in those days. The AM was put on the air by C. Oscar Baker in 1947; the FM went on the air in 1960 from the AM stick with 35 kw @ about 180' (I remember hearing its initial broadcast). When Richard Hunt upgraded, it had to move NW to maintain minimum required distance from 95.3 in Xenia; likewise, 95.3 is limited as to where it can move due to 94.9 in Fairfield/Cincy, 95.7 in Piqua and 106.5 in Greenville. Third, if you go to the FCC's Database query, I believe you'll find an application to move WHIO-FM from Piqua to Sharonville (Cincy 'burb) as a Class A. The rumors I've heard are First Broadcasting has made a deal with Cox to buy the moved facility and pair it with WOXY/WAOL so they have a combo to foist on the next "Greater Fool." However, that move probably would allow the 95.3 to move closer to Dayton.

I believe they already have an application to do just that

Cox had nothing to do with WPTW or the former WPTW-FM/WCLR until 1998. It was sold to a guy who was a well-known "flipper" of radio stations and LMAed with Cox until Cox outright purchased the properties (along with WZLR in Xenia). WPTW was spun off to a separate owner and I believe is now owned by Bart Johnson, son of the late farm broadcaster Ed Johnson. Cox Radio is now technically a separate company from the rest of Cox (stock symbol CXR).

Thank you T Moon and gr8 for this info. For many years Channel 7 always identied their O&O as "Miami Valley Broadcasting Company...a Cox Broadcasting Station" during their sign-on and sign-off for many years. The article I read in the old Miami County history book saying that WPTW was founded by Miami Valley Broadcasting Company had me a bit dumbfounded which I why I brought this up on this board....so again my thanks.
