A Change Coming to KGO

Here is my 2016 post on the decline and virtual death of KGO:

Here is another comment from the allaccess.com site which supports your point of view:

"The KGO issue with PPM was more than just the detection technology. The issue was that talk listeners wrote in large chunks of the day in their diary entries while the real PPM listening was for shorter intervals with many interruptions. So between the last diary books in 2008 and an average of the first currency PPM books, KGO plummeted from 8th in 25-54 to below #20.

PPM came to San Francisco well before the oft-blamed Citadel deal. KGO, already on a considerable slide in the sales demos, was massacred by the PPM. From the year 2000 when KGO had a number one ranked 5.0 share in 25-54 in the Spring book to mid-2010 when the station averaged 20th in the same demo with around a 2.4 share, the station had been on a decline for a decade. The PPM simply pushed it over the edge of the cliff."

Given they're doing everything just short of looping "sports betting talk starts Monday!", what sports network is available for them to affiliate with in the market? The only explicit sports betting talk nets I'm familiar with are Audacy's BetMGM and the VSIN network, and to a lesser extent the SportsMap/SportsGrid network.

Note that Jim Rome---a sports show, not a sports betting show---is holding down noon-3.

I don't think there's any "sports betting" format that is full 24/7 sports betting talk; it's typically a sports talk format that features a few sports betting-centric shows in major dayparts.

Six and a half years ago, this was supposed to be the answer:

My personal opinion here is that OTA radio usage in San Francisco is low compared to the rest of the country. Usage of AM specifically is even lower. So there's really very little they can put on AM right now that will ever have the impact that it once had.

Actually, the calculated local share of AM is very high in San Francisco, as it always has been. While the national average is around 8%, in SF it is 15%.

However, we need to look at KNBR which is listed in the book as "KNBR" with an FM simulcast. That brings up the AM average artificially as does the KCBS simulcast. Still, totally deducting both of them, the AM usage is higher than most other markets.

I mean, even with the change from diary to PPM, KCBS and KQED are able to continue its reigns while KGO is now getting constantly beaten by KSFO.

As of the last ratings book, KQED is tops with 7.8, then KCBS with 6.4, then all the way down the barrel is KSFO with a 1.8 and KGO with a 1.7.

KGO has been struggling for a long time and it finally has been put out of its misery.

When you say "share," do you mean among actual radio users? Or among the total population? My comment was about PUR.
Percentage of AQH listening.

The end of a historic era in San Francisco (and California) radio. A station that could be, and still is, heard nightly in several west coast states and in Canada, that still had a loyal audience to talkers like Mark Thompson.
Watch that 1.7 PPM go down to 0.1. Seriously, it will be 0.1 next month. Mark my words.

Point taken about the signal, but clearly, a 1.7's not enough, so what DO you do with it?

More on sports betting---or lack of same-----in California.
"...No. Right now there is no legal sports betting in California live or on the internet. The sites that are available for California residents to bet on are hosted offshore and operate in a legal grey area.

I think Sports Betting may be the number one advertiser in states like mine where it's legal. It may be a huge "bet" whether or not California approves it.
Between the online gambling sites to the casinos that have "sports books" (rooms with lots of TVs where you can spend all day watching and betting on sports), along with the tipsters, the emerging sports betting industry is ever-present on the nation's top sports station, WFAN.

U remember we have the midterm elections right Prop 26 and Prop 27 aka Tribes who run casinos in their native lands vs Big Tech powered apps like FanDuel and DraftKings plus casino operators like MGM and Caesars voting to regulate sports betting in California next year and added to the LA Rams and Golden State Warriors winning this year.

Audacy has the BetQL network while DraftKings has VSIN. Those props are costly just to access and enter the nation's most populous state. If Prop 27 passes, Audacy might buy AMs while VSIN might extend it's partnership with iHeart for distribution. Flipping KGO to sports betting is another political marketing stunt despite some typical dangers of gambling too much.

Look I don't take sides on the Props until Nov. 8 but this year we got LA Rams winning the Super Bowl and Golden State Warriors winning the NBA Finals. Accessing the No.2 and No.6 media markets is the biggest gamble in the midterm elections.

No! Never ask that! Prepare for the onslaught of posts about electric bills and turning in the license.
Yeah, and I don't want that---but if you look at Crainbebo's post---it's about this monster signal. Okay, so you've got 50,000 watts at 810 on the dial. No issues with signal. You've got a market that is, according to David's numbers, a little more AM-friendly than most and one where the top two stations are usually spoken word (and if the Giants are having a hot season, maybe the top three).

So, rather than saying Cumulus f-ed up, what DO you do with it? And no, we can't go back to 2011 and un-f it.

It's "sports betting." It will be "hash marks."

If they would move 1050's format to 810 and put the betting on 1050, 810's numbers would still be marginal, but not -.-
