A Change Coming to KGO

Reading the Twitter replies sheds light on the outgoing KGO demos: “Listened for 60 years”, “Listened for decades”, “Listened for eons”, etc. And those same tweeters talk about their parents “rolling in their graves.”

Perhaps it was time to dump the geezers?
Speaking as a geezer, I resent that!😁

Someone already made the response I was going to, but with that said, I guess all the other local radio hosts across the country talking about the midterm elections in other states should also be cancelled.
Talk show listeners and callers still like talk about national issues and personalities. Talk about city council will only get you so far, except when very controversial and emotional issues show up, such as "Let Covid spread uncontrolled" vs. don't.

Under the leadership of Jim Dunbar and Mickey Luckoff KGO lead the ratings for decades and set the gold standard for Talk Radio

That was 20 years ago. Dunbar retired in 2000. Mickey quit when the station was owned by Citadel. The problem was the station became old & complacent. By 2011, the demos were too old to sell. Plus by then, the population had shifted from what it had been years ago. The station simply didn't adapt to changes in the market.

Or, y'know---a race that could decide which party controls the Senate.

C'mon, PTBoardOp---national politics has been fair game for "local hosts" for decades---well before the current era. Michael Jackson at KABC springs to mind---and for that matter, EVERY host on KGO in its glory days.
No, I will not "c'mon".

Just because something has been done in the past, even by figures who you respect, doesn't make it right.

If you're suggesting I should blame Michael Jackson and some retired/dead KGO hosts for pioneering the idea of tearing down politicians from other states, who haven't even been elected, I will be happy to blame them. I don't know the history of talk radio before Limbaugh very well, so I will refrain.

The election in Georgia has national implications for control of the Senate. t also speaks to the cynicism of the GQP in thinking "we need a black football player to run against a civil rights leader".
You're creating a tempest in a teapot. The people of California should have no role in how the Republicans in Georgia nominate their candidates for any office. Ergo, talking about them on a radio station serving the SF Bay market is wasted breath in the best case.

Correct.

And yes, it is tough to be a local talk show host who has to fill several hours a day every day. Maybe we just shouldn't have that job any more. Replace it with the "local podcast host", putting out 2 or 3 thirty minute episodes a week.

It's clear from what I wrote that I'm not suggesting you blame anyone.

Herschel Walker isn't running for the Macon City Council, he's running for the United States Senate. The Senate Minority Leader has said publicly that his party has a "candidate quality problem". Which party controls the U.S. Senate hinges on a few key races, one of which is the seat Mr. Walker is running for.

sorry if this has already been asked. But how does a competing company put content on a competing company’s signal?
Someone mentioned that while Audacy produces the BetQL content, Cumulus distributes it via Westwood One (presumably similar to their CBS Sports Radio agreement)
Also, Premiere is owned by iHeartRadio and in many markets they produce content that ends up airing on their competition, if iHeart doesn't have free space on their signals, or just plain made a deal to put their content on the competition. Money talks, so if someone else wants to pony up the funds, why not?

It's had lousy ratings for the past 11 years. If it's viable, what DO you put on it?

And putting any format on a non-viable signal only guarantees failure.
How about a full market signal that reaches the Asian population? Or how about moving ESPN to 810 while leaving the sports betting on an inferior signal.

Yes, but because it is clear you think it is a legitimate topic. One wouldn't "blame" Marlon Brando for his performance in The Godfather.

Anyway, I've said my piece. I don't actually have any opinions on KGO other than the topic of its final 20 seconds.

Genuine question - what happened in the studio at that point? I heard the recording on the Format Change Archive site - Mark Thompson sounded a bit distracted while he was talking about whatever issue he was going on about, and then suddenly trailed off and said "things are transpiring in the studio" and gave the legal ID.

Did someone just walk into the studio and tell him to end his program, or what?
We may get some answers this coming Tuesday, when Mark Thompson joins Tim Conway Jr. on KFI for "Thompson Tuesday". 6-10pm PT. He's there for all 4 hours, and they don't hold much back in their discussions. It should be interesting. If you have a question for Mark, the producer will pass it on to him
