A change to 104.1 Mobile

Wow, Give them time.. WABD been on the air for like an hour & you already bashing them. Please give them a month....

Haha....best joke of the entire history of Radio-Info....you think a Crudulus station will get better? TeeHee. You mark the calendar and come back and stay they are better. IT DOES NOT HAPPEN ANYWHERE.

Too lazy to look right now (after reading seven pages of replies), but I wonder if the WABT calls are still available. (WABT was the final set of call letters for daytimer AM 1000 in Montgomery, originally WQTY, the AM half of WQTY / WFMI (the mono classical station on 98.9 during the seventies).

And, I've actually started listening more to Y 102 in Montgomery. Will never match the same as the heritage days but I have apparently they may be the least worst CHR in Alabama now, Cumulus or not. (although I haven't heard Kiss 102.7 in NW Alabama to judge)

I was thinking WABV sounded more like WABB than WABD.... there's still a possibility that Cumulus will work something out to put the WABB calls on 104.1. Copying the logo kinda gives credence to this theory.

Cumulus is also apparently hiring some of the former WABB staff members.

So, all in all...WABB will slowly ressurect in a month or two. So silly if you ask me. I mean what's the point of WABB going off the air when they are basically moving to a different dial and the former air staff coming over. They did not even say Goodbye so it makes sense that they will return to the airwaves. It's the most silliest thing and it's a bit frusturating to me, personally to see Cumulus do this. I'm sorry, I hope 107.3 beats them head on. Y'all can disagree with me all you want, but I don't like when people like Cumulus thinks that the only way to get the former WABB audience back is to clone an exact station...when the originality, that brought 52+ years of history to the Gulf Coast (Mobile-Pensacola) area, which was 97.5 WABB signed off the air. Guys c'mon. Move on with your lives people. WABD, is just not the best approach to take. I'm against it 99.9%.

But again, im just one person. I wish them the best of luck in the future endeavors.

ABM, are you located in the Mobile/Pensacola market? 104.1's signal kills 107.3's. It may not show on paper, but turn on a radio and 107.3 just can't cut it. I suspect they are overshooting central Baldwin county to throw a half ass signal into Mobile and Pensacola. No one seems to get a good signal on 107.3, no matter what their location is. I see no way for 107.3 to win a head to head battle. 107.3 may be better off with that Rhythmic thing than leaning toward the former WABB 97.5 format. Get some WABB listeners and some 93BLX listeners.

Cumulus may very well have a history of destroying radio stations but there is a local exception. About 10 years back Cumulus bought the Fort Walton cluster from Holiday(?). 99 Rock Fort Walton-Pensacola was/is live local all day long with plenty of DJ-listener interaction and a very broad (actually kinda strange) playlist. Very few changes occurred to the on air presence of 99 Rock after the Cumulus takeover and it is still a very good station.

Ah, hell... I know nothing, I just own a radio.

It's fine in Baldwin County, but that's a relatively small population compared to Mobile or Pensacola or both.

My only reception issues here are with their HD, which is the weakest of the bunch. 104.1's was the strongest until they shut it off. And that's when I quit listening to Jack, because all the analog processing here is just too loud for my tastes.

I live in Baldwin Country and to me, I don't have a big problem getting them in my car or even at home.

The Facebook page linked in my previous post was an imposter page, according to a message from the administrator of the page claimed to be the official Facebook page for WABD-FM. Here is the address to the official page, according to the message:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/104-1-WABD/189134827862681

It should have been posted on the old WYOK-FM Facebook page, which remains available. Here is the address for that page:

Well 107.3 is now referring to themselves as "The Gulf Coast Hit Music Station" as well as WABD/WABB.
Guys, this is ridiculous. WABB has never "left" Mobile, so we can stop mourning now. They are returning to 104.1 on Monday morning, so for a lot of y'all, this will be"wonderful" day. According to RadioInsight.com, Q-Tip is coming back. Then probably Blondie, Nick Fox, and the rest of the crew. Same old WABB is coming back just on a different dial. What a waste then to be saying goodbye's and all when you wait less than week for it to return. The tagline "Gulf Coast, We'll Miss You.." WOOFF! One word: rediculous. Grow up, people.. Are y'all that desperate? As mentioned, before -I'm fully against it with the approach Cumulus is taking 104.1, but whatever. Radio on the Gulf Coast just got a tad bit more confusing, especially when it comes this Monday morning.

^No need to be rude by telling people to "grow up". You should understand that the WABB-FM we knew before March 1st is gone. Former announcers for WABB-FM may be coming back to radio through a different station with the same programming format, but they would be coming to a different facility with different employees other than announcers.

And some would argue "the" WABB everyone grew up with died with Bernie Dittman.

I don't understand why you'd be against what Cumulus is doing.  As far as I can see, they're doing something good for Mobile and the Gulf Coast.  People were unhappy about losing WABB, and, now, they're getting it back.  The whole point of radio is to do what your audience and/or potential audience wants.  The fact that people were mourning WABB should tell you they didn't want to lose it.  And, yes, now, they can stop mourning it because someone gave them what they wanted!

When it came down to WABB saying goodbye and whether or not they should've done it, I can't see anything wrong with it.  Most of the staff probably didn't know they were going to get hired by Cumulus.  They probably hoped they would and lobbied for it, but I doubt they knew exactly what would happen. Wouldn't you want to say goodbye to your listeners if you got the chance?  Besides, even if they did, they did a good job getting everyone's attention, and, now, people know where to look.  I'd call that good self-promotion, and it didn't cost anyone a dime.  How could that be considered a bad thing?

On top of that, the staff at WABB was considered to be a good group of people who did their jobs well.  Shouldn't they be rewarded for doing a good job?  It sounds like they were; they got hired almost immediately after losing their jobs with Dittman.  I don't see a single negative.  Of course, if you do, you have every right not to listen, and it sounds like you won't.

Did you mean the station was being called WABB in addition to WABD?

What I think Cumulus might be doing right now is trying to make WABD as close to WABB for the time being. I think probably their strategy is to lure WABB listeners in by making the station look and sound like the WABB that just went off the air (for now) since the whole "shock" of losing WABB is still there. Maybe over time, WABD will create their own idenity as people get used to them, but right now they're using this to their advantage. It's a pretty smart move because they know WABB is missed and they hope to keep all those WABB listeners around when they create their own idenity.

So yes, I agree WABD is (for the time being) trying to resemble WABB, but I think over time they will create their own idenity and people will recognize them for being WABD and not a clone of WABB. I hope that makes sense.

Kent,

Well said.

So now that the dust has settled for the most part with all the changes, let's change gears. CC is so desperate to make 107.3 stick, they're swinging everywhere. They're trying to take ownership of taglines/slogans that WABD had at their launch. They're trying to grab up every piece of syndicated programming they can. I've even heard this rather interesting gossip from more than a couple people. So I present this for opinion. Which in your opinion is the worse evil....

A) Cumulus basically using the WABB logo and slightly changed call letters

or

B) CC attempting a signal swap with EMF and trying to get the Dittmans to give up the AM and WABB call letters?
