A day in the life of a lamptimer

The prize is a state of the art Wal-Mart Lamptimer imported all the way from China

Dibs on April 2012, or when they re-acquire status as overflow station
for University of Nebraska football, whichever comes first.

In addition to guessing when we'll have our first 100 day of the year, Nurse Jeff and I are sponsoring a "Guess when Lumberyard 14~Forty will be on at night again?" contest. The prize is a state of the art Wal-Mart Lamptimer imported all the way from China  Heck, we might even throw in some tasty Humble pie compliments of the Luvable One!

I'm placing my money on July 2010. Something big is going happen, I can sense it! ;)

Spooky. No, not the Classics IV song (though it's probably on the
Goldmine's hard drive), but about 9:56 AM Lumberyard 1440 was
in "dead air" mode--carrier on but no programming.

Don't know when the problem started, but the real spooky part is
that at 10:00 straight up, after at least four minutes of dead air,
the TOH ID stager ran, then back to music.

Amazing, since we know how close to real time they always are
when signing on and off! ::)

asugeo, or anyone in the know--does KAZG run colon blow stuff
at 9 or 9:30 Saturday mornings, and could it have run short?

Those goldminers at Lumberyard 14~Forty will be working a little O.T. come 5/01. Up at 5:30am and packing it in at 7:15pm. Of course all shifts are based on Lamptimer Standard Time :)

Looking forward to that! The Goldminers, though, took an extended morning break today when they started the 10:00 A.M. hour with a classic KAZG infomercial. ::) The good times and great oldies didn't start until 10:30 A.M. For us oldies lovers, we might as well just say that the Lumberyard is unlistenable weekdays between 7:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Thank goodness the days are getting longer!

At 5:39 this morning, these freqs were already blasting away
on daytime power/pattern:

580/1010/1060/1100/1190/1360/1510

But the Big 1480 was still mired in the nighttime ether, and
our fave, Lumberyard 1440, was...not to be heard at all!

As with past top o'the months, a day late and a dollar short
for both.

1480 powered up at 5:57:51.

And--still on April LST*--the Lumberyard popped on at 6:07:34,
with nary a legal ID to be heard (at least as of 6:13).

*: Lamptimer Standard Time.

Lumberyard 1440 is still a "day behind." TOH legal at 7:02:00 PM,
and the carrier was unceremoniously cut (no ID) at 7:07:39, in line
with how late April has gotten with the drifting lamptimer.

The other stations checked all played nice, although KDUS 1060
could have had trouble with its own lamptimer, or else a glitch
with its XMTR--at 7:08 there was no carrier and when it came
up again at 7:10 it was still on day power/pattern. The night
pattern did kick in at 7:15:28.

hmmmmm....is Gumpdusky using the same lamptimer to control their two Ancient Modulation © stations? I'll have Nurse Jeff drive by Lumberyard 14~Forty © during the day and check to see if there's a long extension cord headed south to Guadalupe & I-10.

This morning (Sunday) the carrier popped on with Sherry in progress at
5:37:44, so while someone was lurking out at the Lumberyard last night to
finally reset the sign-on time for May, they still failed to fix the lamptimer's
real time drift which is now approaching eight minutes on the late side.

Q: Did I mention there was no legal ID at sign-on?

A: No, but why bother? There almost always never is, unless the
time-of-day and the TOH automation manage to meet up. ::)

BTW, he first song to be aired in full was Do You Love Me by the Contours.

A nice touch by the Goldminers, who probably knew that the usual KOOL
fave--and demo buster--wouldn't get any spins this weekend on 94.5 as
it's a That '70s Weekend...well, actually it's a '70s Playlist Weekend but
what's in a name? ;)

KOOL-FM aside: it's always good to hear Katfish (with K) Kris Kelly on
the weekend. He's always up, puts on a good show, and seems to be
the only live voice on Saturday and Sunday amid all the voicetracking.
Now if KOOL would only let Lee "master of the talkup" Bortel also air
live, in a midday or afternoon weekend slot.

Citizens' Arrest! That's almost 8 more minutes of worn out oldies than permitted by Gummit regulation. Nurse Jeff and I are callin' Sheriff Joe to arrange a crime suppression sweep at Lumberyard 14~Forty. Those goldminers can't be worked this hard!

If this pans out on Monday...

One wonders if Guv Jan will now want to perform her reverse polarization act and
say she really didn't sign senate bill KNX 1070.

It will be really doubtful the state song becomes Everybody Loves Somebody. ;)

New slogan for the other guy: "buzz off!"

Did I leave anyone out? Oh yeah, there's also a guy running on the (D) side.
What's his name...uh, Steve Goddard? ;D

If this guy get's his way, Lumberyard 14~Forty will be blowtorching those worn out oldies with 50kw of music pow-pow-power! http://www.radio-broadcast-engineer.com/AM-interference-power.htm Of course they'll still be signing off at sunset (Lamptimer Standard Time) as the petition does not address nighttime power settings. Nurse Jeff and I can just hear it now....

.....Your all day Goldmine with 50,000 watts. Kay A Zee Gee, a Cactus Radio station, Scottsdale-Phoenix.

You might be on to something here Doc, specifically in reference to our beloved Goldmine. For whatever reason, after about 6:00 P.M., there is increased interference that you can hear on 1440 from 1430 AM in Utah. The 1430 day-time signal from Utah is so strong, that there is some interference even here in Phoenix on 1440, KAZG. Then, right before 1440 signs-off at around 7:10 P.M., 1430 powers down to night-time power and can't be heard at all. For those few minutes between 1430 Utah power-down and the Lumberyard's carrier dump at around 7:22 P.M., the KAZG signal is crisp and clean. So perhaps there is something to the Radio Broadcast Engineer's argument, but I would rather have 1440 address their lapse in nighttime power broadcasting first before doing anything else.

Bring back the joy we had for those two nights in April Sandusky! :-*

KLO in Ogden. 10kw day and 5kw night. The Nurse and I can pick 'em up at night in the Buckeye Media Hut when we're in the mood for Ancient Modulation ©.

Maybe when Gumpdusky signs a few more brokered program deals they'll spring for a xmttr that'll power down to 52 watts and your wish will come true. The Nurse and I dream of them di-plexing at the 10~Sixty xmttr site in scenic Guadalupe and going for more pow-pow-power. But then we couldn't call it Lumberyard 14~Forty © could we?

Shocker!

The lamptimer was (finally) adjusted!

Tonight's carrier dump at Lumberyard 1440 was at 7:16:42 PM.
Or maybe it was 7:16:43. I wasn't expecting it and was caught
a bit off-guard.

While various other local radio geeks might be pleased that the
Gumpduskers finally "lassoed the lamptimer," all I can say is why
couldn't they get it any closer to 7:15? ;D

But at least I was listening. Now where did I leave my Purple
People Meter? I can't find my Kookie Komb either! ;D

BTW asugeo--while KLO Ogden's power-down in April was at the
same time as Phoenix (8:00 MDT/7:00 MST), now in May it's at
8:45 MDT/7:45 MST, thirty minutes after Phoenix.

I've seen this topic on the front page for a couple of years. I'm not trying to be a wiseguy, but just exactly what is a lamptimer?
