A day in the life of a lamptimer

Friday night's (11/18) carrier dump at Lumberyard 14~Forty was a classic! The audio feed from Radio Khushi was abruptly cut off at 5:30p, but not the carrier! After a couple of seconds of dead air, up pops a worn out oldie by the Beatles. Nurse Jeff and I were about as giddy as media consultants with nuthin' better to do could be! We thought the Goldminers would be working all night, or pulling a KFuNN trick by staying on a half hour past sunset. But alas our dream of falling asleep to Kookie classics came to an end as the carrier was dumped two minutes later. And yes, no legal ID at sign off. Station policy.

I read earlier in the thread about how Radio Khushi handled the DST change in Seattle. Quite well, it seems. Khushi airs Wednesday through Friday from 5 to 6 PM on Seattle KKNW, apparently live. KKNW is the 24-hour "alternative talk" station in town, equivalent to KFNX.

I checked out a Radio Khushi show during the holiday and found some parallels to Lamptimer 1440:

  • Preceding program? alternative talk babble + CNN Headline News break

  • Concluding program? at :56 the stations cuts out in the middle of a song for "The preceding program does not express the views or opinions of the management" etc. + CNN Headline News break + Russian show

  • Sound quality? execrable after sundown

  • Commercials? borrowed directly from the Phoenix base, no Seattle-specific spots. 602 and 480 phone numbers, calls to visit a shop on Chandler Boulevard, and so on.

Khushi, Khushi Indeed! What a nice present Mrs Gumpdusky has selected for the hard working goldminers at Lumberyard 14~Forty. Just check out the specs on this new xmttr: http://www.nautel.com/wp-content/uploads/downloads/2011/05/XR3-XR6_W_ss_1.4.pdf It can go as low as 50 watts (two under nighttime authorization) and has six presets for power settings - pre sunrise/full power/post sunset/nighttime. Just imagine how much better those worn out oldies will sound in state of the art Ancient Modulation! That 83% efficiency rating is the exact opposite of our '76 Gremlin Levi's Special. The Nurse and I are impressed :)

But, can the Lumberyard's Antenna Tuning Unit handle 155% positive peaks? Inquiring minds want to know!

No problema, mi amigo! The helpful folks at Ponderosa Lumber have enough bolts, straps, fasteners and assorted parts to git 'er done! Nurse Jeff and I can't wait to hear BANG 545 at 155% pos peaks..sha-la-la-la!

Looks like those Christmas Goldmine oldies have finally hit the Lumberyard! Heard "Little Saint Nick" by the Beach Boys early this morning mixed in with our other Goldmine favorites.

Frohe Weihnachten to the Lamptimer and everyone else at Lumberyard 1440! 8)

And the news just keeps getting better for Lumberyard 14~Forty! Now that we've passed the Winter Solstice and the days are getting longer, we'll get to hear either worn out oldies or Radio Khushi for an extra half hour in January! Then sometime in the first quarter of 2012 the new Nautel xmttr will be installed by the Goldminers - perhaps making the last Valley daytimer a fulltime 24/7 station. Not since discovering the many bacterial benefits of cookie dough have Nurse Jeff and I been so excited!

I just read KAZG broadcasts in C-QuAM. Can anyone confirm this? Also, does anyone know what jingle package they're using? Thanks!

Nurse Jeff and I have heard rumors to the effect that a large crated box will be delivered to Lumberyard 14~Forty in the near future. In it is the lamptimer's replacement, a state of the art piece of equipment that not only will enable the Goldminers to work 24/7, but make worn out oldies sound even more worn out on Ancient Modulation! Not since the days of J.J. (aka the King of Beepers) have the Nurse and I been so excited. A fez-tastic time as the last Valley daytimer rides off into the sunset sans the infamous carrier dump!

A reconditioned Ampliphase new Nautel. With built-in power switch. Huzzah! :D

Will Gumpdusky invite us all out to the Lumberyard for a bury-the-lamptimer ceremony?
Or better, they could donate it to the House Of Broadcasting.

I don't know, maybe we should have a barbeque instead! ;)

Now that it's February (Thu Feb 2), and the daytime broadcast day is 7:15 AM
to 6:15 PM, I tuned in at 6:13 tonight and found that the KayFuNNsters had
already powered down (nothing as "important" as Moe Money after 6:00), and
Lumberyard 1440 (still waiting for the new Nautel, I guess) did a carrier dump
in its usual fashion at 6:15:55.

The best part is, we can now actually listen to some of those golden oldies after Radio Khushi. Today the oldies were already playing at 5:45 P.M. so I guess Radio Khushi is still doing it's 3:45 P.M. - 5:45 P.M. shift.

While this is great and all, would someone explain to me the Lumberyard's recent practice of signing on around 6:00 A.M. with: (1) either full 5000 watts already going or; (2) 500 watts for the first half-hour and then powering up to full power between 6:30 A.M. and 7:00 A.M., well before legal FCC sunrise time? It's been going on all winter long and puts KFNN's antics to shame. Must be Sandusky's going-away party for the ol' Lamptimer! ;D

It usually takes several weeks for the Radio Khushi folks to realign their brokered hours with Lumberyard 14~Forty's broadcast day. Don't be too surprised if that extra half hour of worn out oldies is cut in half when Radio Khushi goes back to 4-6pm.

Can't explain the unexplainable. Nurse Jeff and I are still trying to understand why Madonna thinks anyone would want to see her having a wardrobe malfunction at the Super Bowl this weekend

Not sure you're allowed to say "Super Bowl" though. Did you clear it with
Roger Goodell? You may have to use something trite like "Big Game." ;)

Tuned into the Lumberyard this evening around 5:45 P.M. to see if those golden oldies were playing after Radio Khushi, and all I heard was static. No sign or trace of KAZG, even on reduced power. Anyone know what time they signed off today? Personally, I'm hoping this could be the beginning of the installation of the new Nautel transmitter.

Inquiring minds would like to know what's behind the strange happenings at the Lumberyard! ???
