A day in the life of a lamptimer

As All Access would say...SHOCKER!

Lumberyard 1440 actually did a legal ID at sign-off tonight! It probably
won't happen again until the year 2525. If man is still alive. <grin>

But it was all the "luck of the lamptimer." About 6:01:02 PM the music
automation started the TOH stager, at 6:01:07 the actual legal ID part
("KAZG Scottsdale") of the jingle aired, and just after the superfluous
COL part ("Phoenix") finished at 6:01:12, the carrier was dumped.

It's not known if the Gumpduskers are having a celebration over at the
Londen Tower--or the lumberyard--this evening, but if so, none of us
were invited. "Hey, buy that lamptimer another drink!" <wink>

Oldiesfan, I was listening tonight as well and I give Gumpdusky a round of applause for getting it right! Chubby Checker ended his “Twist,” the legal ID played and, like beautiful clockwork, the transmission stopped and static reigned on the 1440 dial. It was almost as if an engineer was actually in the Lumberyard getting it right for once. Good job Katfish! =)

As a side note, I really enjoyed hearing the Happy Organ played today around 3:30 P.M. Can’t hear a song like that on KOOL!

Kudos from the Buckeye Boyz and the thousands of alumni who graduated with honors from the Media Hut. That Lamptimer gets an A+, in addition to a gold star by the Gumpdusky name. Now let's party like it's 19~Ninety Four as the chance of this happening again is the same as the Cardinals returning to the Super Bowl in our lifetime!

Has the Ibiquity Fairy recently paid a visit to Lumberyard 14~Forty? Here are the clues that lead Nurse Czarina Jeff and I to thinks so: muddy frequency response; lower modulation level; and all kinds of hash on 14~Twenty, 14~Thirty, 14~Fifty and 14~Sixty. While Gumpdusky can't figure out how to convert the Valley's last daytimer into a fulltime operation, they have the bucks to blow on I-Crap. YIKES!

No dice, Doc. I just gave a listen on the car radio and there is no I-CRAP
polluting the adjacents of Lumberyard 1440.

1430 was (likely) KLO Ogden, several stations were fighting to be heard on
1450, and weak solo signals on 1420 and 1460.

IIRC, catfish (with a "C") inferred "something big" was coming to WXLW KAZG,
but he ruled out the hiss 'n' hash generator.

BTW, Booble Struble won't be too pleased at what you called him. <grin>

Dunno, fan of Oldies no longer played on KOOL.

The Nurse Czarina and I monitored the Lumberyard at 3:50pm...plenty of sunshine to ward off that evil skywave interference. It was splatter city 20khz either side of 14~Forty...just like you hear on KFWhyEye, KT'R, X-TRA 9~Ten, Kay Oh Why, etc. Plus something has changed in their audio chain. It used to punch through and cause the Gremlin's headliner to oscillate. Now the audio is just as lame as Kay Oh Why's.

Here's what Catfish said back on 9/23 ".. Noise is coming.. get ready..." He also said it wasn't IBOC, but the noise is definitely there. We're about to have a Middle Eastern meltdown at the Media Hut as the Buckeye Boyz continue to wonder What in the Wide, Wide World of Sports is a goin' on at Lumberyard 14~Forty?!

I’ve heard the same noise Doc. Out here on the right side of town, the noise interferes even with the oldies pumping out on KAZG. I can also hear the noise on 1450, 1460, 1470 and something is even interfering with the fun talk on 1480 AM. Who knows what’s going on at the Lumberyard. Maybe the timber company has made its long awaited return to south Scottsdale and has started the machinery back up. I think KOOL Listener Lauren needs to go down and do another “Kookie, Kookie, Lend Me Your Comb” investigation!

Rumor has it they've installed a combo rowing machine/treadmill with an attached generator to pow-pow-power up those Golden Oldeez.

Adding another layer to the sign-on / sign-off times we all love to post for the Lumberyard, how about we start a log when "Kookie, Kookie, Lend Me Your Comb" comes on? It definitely seems to be the Lumberyard's favorite golden oldie to play from the 50's! This 1959 classic comes to us from Edd Byrnes of 77 Sunset Strip fame and Connie Stevens. It peaked at #4 on the charts.

Today's "Kookie" sighting was at 5:04:21 P.M. and disappeared in a flash of light before a KAZG commercial at 5:06:24 P.M.

Also, to stay on topic, the great Lumberyard signed off today at 6:02:28 P.M. That's a good 15 minutes plus after sunset, but close enough to the monthly legal range. Also, they barely got it in, but Gumpdusky played the top of the hour legal ID at 6:02 P.M. Then, the Animals, "We Got to Get Out of This Place" started and played for a few seconds until the lamptimer kicked in. Nice job Gumpdusky with the legal ID! On the other hand, morning people at KFNN "have some splainin to do!"

That and My Way by Frank Sinatra must be Mrs Lumberyard's faves as we hear 'em quite frequently on 14~Forty. Imagine the power she must have over the Goldminers....too bad she can't do something about the drifting Lamptimer, though!

You must have heard Ol' Blue Eyes this morning singing that exact song around 10:10 A.M. Another Lumberyard classic from the goldmine!

Speaking of Mrs. Lumberyard, is she seeing anybody? =)

Sign-off today for the Lumberyard was at 6:03 P.M. and 2 seconds, right after The Righteous Brothers said, "It makes me just feel like crying." How appropriate! The randomness of the lamptimer strikes again.

I have long enjoyed the ever evolving saga of the Lumberyard Lamptimer.

It's a shame they don't stream - but what can one expect when they don't even stay on the air past sunset!

Does anyone have a few sample hours they could share? I know Kookie Kookie is a well documented theme :) What's the rest of the hour(s) look like?

Would you settle for a half-hour log of the Goldmine? No Kookie (or My Way)...

4:31 Western Union - Five Americans
4:33 Ain't That Peculiar - Marvin Gaye
4:36 This Magic Moment - Jay & the Americans
4:39 Good Lovin' - Young Rascals
4:42 Build Me Up Buttercup - Foundations
4:45 (stopset)
4:46 Be My Baby - Ronettes
4:48 I'm Into Something Good - Herman's Hermits
4:51 Crystal Blue Persuasion - Tommy James & the Shondells
4:55 The Tracks Of My Tears - Miracles
4:58 A World Without Love - Peter & Gordon
5:00 (legal ID)
5:00 Oh, Pretty Woman - Roy Orbison
5:03 Liar, Liar - Castaways

Nice! Very nice!
Judging from how everyone on here adores the station I have been wondering how the music mix is... this, although short (and greatly appreciated!) is a brief snapshot that it is truly sticking to the 50s / 60s music as well as playing what I call the "fun" tunes. Listening to this mix is "fun" :)

If anyone else has some more to add, I'd be happy to see them!

Thank you oldiesfan6479

I know the last two songs I heard before the lamptimer kicked in tonight at 6:03 P.M. and 23 seconds was "She's Not There" by the Zombies and the 1962 hit "Beechwood 4-5789" by the marvelous Marvelettes. I also remembering hearing the Big Bopper this afternoon singing "Chantilly Lace," Elvis Aaron Presley singing "Jailhouse Rock," the Marcels singing "Blue Moon" and Richard Steven "Ritchie" Valenzuela singing "La Bamba." One notable surprise song I heard yesterday afternoon around 5:40 P.M. was "MacArthur Park" by Richard Harris. Such a long song to just be about baking a cake!

There are many other wonderful oldies that KAZG plays and the list could go on and on. They definitely don't forget the great artists from the late 50's and that's one of the reasons why it's a great oldies station (KOOL, please take note). The best analogy I can give for the music played on the Lumberyard is for you to think of the typical oldies station 15 years ago when they used to play just 50's and 60's hits.

That's what KAZG is all about and that's why we love the Lumberyard! Now if we could only get them to broadcast at night and dump that stupid morning show, 1440 would be listenable and enjoyable 24/7!

...that reminds Nurse Czarina Jeff and me to make certain Bobby Boris Pickett & The Cryptkickers
go into power rotation beginning Wednesday.

Hey Doc--just as long as it doesn't pre-empt any spins of My Way, or else
Mrs. Lumberyard will have your fezzes nailed to some scrap 2x4s. <wink>

"Boris," along with Jumpin' Gene Simmons (no, not that Gene Simmons) and
Sheb Wooley's Purple People Meter sprinkled in over four days is a far sight
more palatable than Wonderful Christmastime and the Chipmunks both in
mega burn-out mode for two months.

In gleeful anticipation of at least one Valley station going all Ho-Ho-Ho this weekend, Nurse Czarina Jeff and I'd like to remind Gumpdusky to reset the lamptimer according to November sunrise and sunset times this Sunday: Sign on at 6am with 500w, bump to 5kw at 7am and do your infamous carrier dump at 5:30pm. Now for our friends at KFuNN, you can use your pre-sunrise authorization at 6am...but we rather doubt it's the 22kw you've been using for the past couple of months. And by 6am, we mean give or take a couple of minutes...maybe five at the max, but certainly not 15 or 20 minutes before 6am. Thank you and have a K-FuNNtastic November!

Doc...

Thanks for the reminder... Nov 1 starts the holiday music season... Don't tell walmart that - as they already have their holiday section up complete with Arizona's finest fake trees.
