A day in the life of a lamptimer

pberger said:
This morning at 7:20 I tuned into 1440 and could hardly here it. I thought maybe the batteries were dying in the radio, so tried another station and it was fine. Then went back, and at 7:20:51, they jumped to full power. It made me wonder, what is the most KAZG has been off from the proper time for full power? And was that ahead or behind time. Sign on or sign off?

I would think with live programming (I guess that sports show is live), that some effort would be made to be on time. They do have advertisers, don't they? Wouldn't and advertiser want full power if he is paying for an ad?

Isn't the Goldmine just filler between Super Colon Blow infomercials and people buying time to be a talk show host? Do they bother running spots otherwise?

Are they still running that Noo Yawk doctor hawking Colon Blow? The Nurse and I thought the Cooking Show took it's place. As far as "spots" go during regular Gold Mine programming, it's one per quarter hour just so they can stop down and fire up another 14 in a row!

It's a new month and that means a longer day for those Goldminers over at the Lumberyard. Today the Goldmine signed off at 6:38 and 49 seconds, not too shabby considering sunset was at 6:28 P.M. The only upside I guess of warmer summer temperatures is a longer broadcast day for the valley's only oldies station. June can't come soon enough so we can get that 7:15 P.M. sign-off time! ;D

March daytime is 6:45 AM to 6:30 PM.

It seems that while the Goldminers have adjusted the lamptimer each month
for the proper times (although they were a day late at the start of March),
they've not reset said lamptimer in terms of real time since sometime in
December, as it's now approaching nine minutes late.

The KayFuNNsters meanwhile are currently powering up and down about
1:30 early, which is certainly within tolerance. Although I'll be interested
in what they might do come March 15 (aka the Ides Of March, 1970 gold ;D)
vis a vis the 6:45 AM power-up time, as the stock market will be opening
at 6:30 instead of 7:30. ???

June can't come soon enough so we can get that 7:15 P.M. sign-off time! ;D

You'll actually get that in May--June and July are 7:45:

You need do have daylight saving time!
This new date will cause many a Lamptimer accross this country to malufunction.

Thanks to the geniuses in Washington (i think) it starts the 14th.

This will be the fourth year (eff. 2007) with DST starting on
the second Sunday in March, and that brings up the question...

Will 55/FYI finally go to El Rushbo and Hannity live year-round
by airing them 9-noon and noon-3 starting Monday the 15th?

Little brother station KNST 790 Tucson did it last year.

And just think, the Nearly Bald One would get his two-hour show
back for eight months ("7 until Rush"). Yeah, you'd have to add
an hour to Broomhead also (3-7).

Nope...we've run this through the Akbarizer 3000 and the answer remains the same. It makes little sense to move the start time of El Rushbo twice a year and expect the audience to follow. However, given the number of guest subs on Ankarlo's shift, it would make sense at some point to move Glenn Beck up to 9am on KT'R.

Back to the Lamptimer: did anyone else notice some hapless 14~Forty station on Long Island just sold for $150,000? And that one runs with 38 watts at night. YIKES!!

Making all this fuss over EAS. ::) How can the Goldminers do the
fourteen-in-a-row if they keep getting interrupted for EAS tests. ;)

Good thing Uncle Charlie didn't want to inspect the Lumberyard's
lamptimer transmitter log!

Nurse Jeff and I are thinkin' about holding a benefit car wash at the Buckeye Media Hut to help Cactus Radio with the fine. If we could get $5 for each posting on "A Day In The Life Of A Lamptimer", the penalty would be paid in full. Plus Gumpdusky could afford a new lamptimer and they might have enough money left over to buy a xmttr capable of running 52 watts at night!!!

Anyone know what was going on this morning with the crummy sound coming from our beloved Lumberyard? Everything sounded muffled and faint as if the Lumberyard was about to explode. I hope the Goldminers over in Scottsdale can fix that aging transmitter so we can get back to our 14 in a row Goldmine! :)

As opposed to the Crummey sound, evenings on KT'R-FM? ;D

I heard a bit of the food show during the 11 AM hour and the signal was
a bit dirty and distorted. Bad local loop Telco line? How does this show
get from the remote site to the "KAZG closet" at the Londen Center?
Tell us how, catfish (with a "C")!

Switching stations for a minute--where's Katfish with a "K" been the
past two weekends? Been hearing PD Kris on KOOL weekend middays
(and sounding VTed).

OK, back to the Lumberyard--what was on right after 10 AM, following
jock talk? (Assuming the jock talk is still on 7-10.) Sounded like colon
blow or similar.

Hmmm, as the broadcast day gets longer (6 AM-7 PM with five gallons
come Thursday), the Goldminers apparently lose more airtime. :(

I can answer that question! For the past couple weeks, the Lumberyard will play the top of the hour legal ID at 10:00 A.M., two nuggets from the Goldmine and then go to an infomercial with some doctor wanting to talk about our health. ::) Not quite colon blow, but it’s pretty close to it!

Whatever it was, it's been fixed. Tuesday afternoon the Nurse and I tuned into Lumberyard 14~Forty to hear Edd Byrnes singing/talking in progress. The mod level and audio quality was just down right passable for Ancient Modulation (however we think the Payola Police should check out which goldminer is getting greased by Mr Byrnes). Now if you want to hear some really bad audio, the Buckeye Boyz suggest you tune down the dial to 13~Ten. YIKES! The over modulation and distortion add even more misery to driving a '76 Gremlin Levi's Special. What in the Wide, Wide World of Sports is a goin' on with the collared crowd at KIHP?

Weren't the Gumpduskers a day late at the beginning of March, too?

At 6:07 this morning, Lumberyard 1440 was on, but barely. Think
52 watts or whatever their PSRA is. (Paging catfish with a "c" to
help us out with the wattages.) They should have been running
full bore at 6:00 LST.*

Meanwhile, at 6:43 this evening, 1440 was nowhere to be heard--
that is, KAZG was nowhere to be heard on 1440--even though they
could have been blasting those demographically unsuitable '50s and
'60s Goldmine greats until 7:00.

BTW, the KayFuNNsters "forgot" to lower power until 7:03:24 PM.

*: LST = Lamptimer Standard Time. ;)

It's a rare occasion that the Lumberyard does a legal ID at sign-off,
but thanks to the drifting lamptimer, it happened tonight.

The ID hit via the automation system at 7:02:17 PM, and after the
first note of Good Vibrations the carrier was dumped at 7:02:23.
I think we can give Gumpdusky credit. 8)

BTW, same M.O. as last night over at the KayFuNNsters' shop, with
power drop at 7:03:23.

ATTENTION!! THIS IS AN URGENT MESSAGE FROM THE LUMBERYARD!!

Its 8:10 P.M. AT NIGHT on Friday, April 2nd, 2010 and 1440 KAZG is still on with its low power. So, apparently, they're trying out the Lumberyard's night-time power tonight! I'm here in Gilbert and I can hear it about the same as the sun-rise authorization. Can anyone else collaborate this with me? Isn't this also around the same time of year a couple years ago that a similar phenomenon occurred? Whatever this is, it's amazing! ;D

Also, there's no bumpers between the songs with any ID of the station or commercial breaks. Its one song right after another. Right now, it's "Help me Rhonda" by the Beach Boys. I wonder how long this is going to last? ???

asugeo, I confirm your "DX catch" here in the 'Tuke. Someone
needs to get a hold of catfish (with a "c") to give us a heads up
on the wattage being used. 52 big ones? You're right, other
than nighttime skywave interference, it seems similar to the
signal strength during the PSRA period prior to this month.

Yes, I think it was April 2008 when this occurred last (there's an
earlier thread here on the board that discusses it).

No TOH ID yet, as of 9:10 PM.

Still nothing but music segues. Maybe Gumpdusky is trying to
boost the Lumberyard's PPM exposure. ;)
