A DYNOMITE SOLUTION FOR THE WRKO HOWIE CARR PROBLEM- HIRE BILLY BULGER

C

Casablanca

After reading the glowing piece on Billy Bulger in this month's Boston Magazine I think WRKO has a dynomite solution for the Howie Carr problem.

WRKO should hire Bill [ he prefers Bill to Billy ] Bulger to replace Howie Carr.

Then WRKO can have felon in the morning and a near felon in the afternoon.

Great radio on par with Buddy Cianci and Bill Bulger even has his own hair. Who knows, Bulger could even broadcast the entire show in Latin.

No, I think the guy's name is Jeff Cochrane but I don't have the article with me at this time.

Why would Emily Rooney have anything to do with it?

LOL, ding ding ding, we have a winner,,,,,,,as absurd as hiring bulger would be, I wouldn't put it past the two dummies in charge.......don't give them any more ideas!

it actually makes a lot of sense and would bring some good old fashioned radio wars back to Boston.

Go for it, Julie!

Before any of you develop cramps from patting yourselves on the back, please remember what Billy Bulger sounds like when he speaks in public. The guy in the old Boston Furniture Sales commercials was more fun to listen to. Finneran is horrible as a talk show host, but at least he knows how to project and emote. Bulger has all the warmth of a dead fish.

All that may be true but he can say all that in Classic Latin. :) and Howie is no prize when it comes to diction or pronunciation.

Do I see a trip to Divorce Court here?

But makes even more sense that WRKO would make Bill Bulger an offer... he can't refuse. ;)

Hubby of Julie Kahn is the editor! (trashes Howie--and 'RKO wants Howie to come BACK?)

From the Globe on 2/12/07 (the day Finneran's show debuted)--link is on that SaveWRKO.com column:
"More than 200 guests were at the Langham Hotel to celebrate the marriage of Entercom Communications' Julie Kahn and Boston magazine bigwig Dan Scully. The nontraditional hitching included gospel singers and the band Tavares. Spotted at the event were Celtics honcho Wyc Grousbeck , former Speaker of the House Tom Finneran (who starts his show today on Entercom station WRKO), Harvard Pilgrim CEO Charlie Baker"

Celtics: Were on WRKO last year and move to WEEI for this upcoming season
Finneran: So much for "We know all about talk radio because...we...invented it" (Dana Hersey liner for 'RKO)
And now they're killing it.
Baker: Harvard Pilgrim is a MAJOR advertiser on 'RKO. One of the reasons DePetro is gone is because
HPHC was upset at some remarks he made. (Their complaint about anti-gay remarks on the show
may have contributed to his later dismissal.)

Herald (Nov 06): "One of WRKO’s biggest advertisers, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, contacted the radio station in March because of an anti-gay conversation on DePetro’s show. Harvard Pilgrim asked WRKO not to run their commercials during DePetro’s program and management was “very responsive”

As the late, great Jerry Williams would always advise Communications Students who wanted to go into broadcasting:
"What business are you going into...journalism, news, talk...? No, you are going into the advertising business."

True then and obviously, true now.

Hence the presence of the folks from the Celtics, HCHP, etc. I'm sure 'RKO has tickets to Sox games
(including their playoffs) for their prime advertisers, etc (who may also get them via the team)

But what if some of their prime advertisers flee to Greater media? Julie admits as much.

Job opening at WRKO mid mornings? I'm not sure how old this online ad is (and note it says 9-noon
not 10-noon) but is 'RKO admitting that Feinburg will wind up getting Howie's slot and they're
looking for a replacement? (It's possible that this ad came up last year before the hiring of
Finneran. You'll remember that the morning show was 6-9 and the next show--DePetro, till he
was fired, was 9-noon...so maybe this ad was put up before Finneran was hired and the hours
changed to 6-10 and 10-noon, and they haven't taken it down)
Still...

>>WRKO Mid-Day Host
WRKO is looking for a midday show host to fill our 9A- noon slot. Candidates should have at least two years experience hosting or co-hosting their own show. The host must have an intimate knowledge of national and global issues in addition to local Massachusetts politics, history and culture. The WRKO midday host will be expected to possess a savvy understanding of the news cycle

Again, Bill Bulger would be the ultimate 'don't get mad; get even" action WRKO could take against Howie Carr.

Imagine, the press that Bulger would get taking over the slot of his bete noir. WRKO couldn't pay for it and the ratings would be interesting.

Okay, let's all sing a chorus or two of Imagine.

as a previous poster stated, Bulger probably wouldn't sound all that good.

the Julie Kahn marriage sounded bizarre. Yikes. Glad I couldn't find my invite :)

Actually, it was pretty cool. My invitation didn't get lost. ;)

Unlike most of the posters here, I actually know the person they seem to love casting aspersions at. She has a law degree, a tremendous track record of sales and management success and is well liked by the vast majority of her employees. Entercom's Boston stations in the aggregate continue to outperform a soft radio market financially.

She would probably be the first to tell you that WRKO needs to do better. She has moved the revenue up since she took over the station (even without counting Red Sox revenue), but until the programming gets consistently better, I suspect neither her nor Jason will be satisfied.

I've seen numerous posters throw vast left wing conspiracy theories out there, but they don't hold water. Entercom is a publicly traded company that is responsible to its shareholders. Boston is its biggest revenue stream. Entercom held their Board of Directors meeting in Boston a few weeks ago and the management team earned high praise. Does anyone really think that they would really sabotage a station in the interest of political ideology? If Julie, et. al. were such flaming liberals that they would, why do you suppose Julie proudly posts a picture of herself with Rush Limbaugh in her office? Why would Savage still be on the air? Why would they be so dead set on getting Howie back? I agree that their fall back position may be that Howie is better on the sidelines than on WTKK, but there is no doubt that their first choice is Howie in PM Drive. He is worth a lot of money to the station and he makes the more challenged areas on the schedule easier to sell.

How dare you come on this board and post actual facts. ;D You probably just put the rest of the regulars/know-nothings in the hospital with heart attacks, for daring to contradict their baseless conspiracy theories and constantly incorrect predictions of doom for Julie and Jason.

You must be new to the land of conspiracy. Rule #1 - Lack of evidence of a conspiracy is proof of a conspiracy.

For a better understanding of this phenomenom, I think that two weeks of listening to George Noory should do the trick. Or, if you're not willing to make that sacrifice, I suggest, as an alternative, reading through the archives of SaveWRKO, which, besides revealing why the next rung in Maloney's media career will be wearing a sandwich board in front of the statehouse, will give you a pretty good primer on the origins of Entercom Derangement Syndrome. It's a little like Mad Cow disease, except the that the brain damage is more obvious.

Regards.
