A fun-filled, KRBE solution

Roula and Ryan replacing Atom and Maria really pisses me off--in case you couldn't already tell from earlier posts.

Maybe if enough people in Houston can decide to avoid KRBE altogether then Cumulus will just kill it and avoid the painful transition this station will go to.

KRBE will go from having a stranglehold to ------ footing around with a demo that's already taken and not looking for more radio options. From having a niche to sharing listeners with a station (KHMX) that probably should have been murdered some time ago.

The only time I've listened to Mix in the last 3 years was about 4 times to check out Sam's new show.
It's nice to have Sam back on the airwaves, but everything he does now is a copout. A flailing recreation of the authenticity of his show at KRBE.

I keep wishing that there was some way to prevent these Atlanta scumbags from ****ing up a great top 40 station. Alas, all we can do is watch as a top 40 landmark is destroyed by terrorists to quality radio.

Cumulus has put on a nice act by ressurecting the KLOL crew and "giving them jobs."
To have Wendy Miller tout how great Cumulus is everyday on his show is a nice touch, too.

Now we are seeing the true colors that have been there all along.

This is far worse than the KLOL implosion. With Rock 101, you had a station that was declining in revenues and a staff of jocks who were beginning to sound more like grandparents than rockers. I was upset when 34 years of KLOL was unplugged, but after the first few months of Mega, its seemed like a good idea.

KRBE was set in autopilot for the next 5 years. All Cumulus had to do was take over and sit back. Sit back and do NOTHING. Absolutely nothing.

Congrats to all of you Roula and Ryan fans--your show is back on the air.

I'm puking right now.

Hey I applaud your voice and opinion, I did the same thing 9 months ago and was told on this site bitching and moaning and boycotting won't do any good. I won't tell you the same thing because you should voice your opinion if you feel the need to, I just wonder where all these numnuts are that hounded me for doing the same exact thing, they are as I thought Roula, Ryan & Eric haters.

I think the R&R thing is a stunt. It will last about a week and then the real active rock 104 will show up with Stevens and Pruitt in the morning.

::)

S&P would be very cool, but like the last post says....keep dreamin'. The first post in this thread was very accurate in that Cumulus is f....king up a cash cow on auto pilot. As a poster in another thread amply put, KRBE is now in the hands of accountants and statisticians that are making decisions on markets that they know nothing about other than what the rating books proclaim. Stations are more than ratings trends. There's local interaction and promotion to and with multiple local interest groups. These are all part of upselling stations relationships to the local marketplace. That's how KRBE remained strong all these years. What do you think "street teams" do? The best display of this upselling relationship from station to market can best be seen in TV here. KTRK, Channel 13 has maintained market dominance for years because of their established relationships via food drives, baby drives, blood drives, specific maketing and promotion to individual local interest groups and on an on. Establishing this type of dominance takes years, but can be eliminated in weeks. Cumulus' accountants and statisticians are going to blow up years of KRBE's upselling relationship dominance and it's hard to believe a good radio man like Pat Fant is going along with this. He may be making the big bucks as the Houston Cumulus "yes man" for now, but after the KRBE demolition his reputation will be reduced to a pile of dog shit in the back yard. I'm looking forward to the day when the corporations finally wake up and realize they pulled the rug out from under these once strong money printing radio and tv station operations and get out. In fact there are signs that CBS is thinking about getting out. They let a large number of employees go this week and rumors are rampant of a large station sell-off. The top sales brass in both radio and tv divisions have recently departed for more lucrative positions. Maybe the end is near. Cumulus' destruction of KRBE here and some of the strong DFW properties will be the shining example of overall corporate ignorance in media ownership. Someday the real broadcasters will return with real programmers, jocks, board ops and sales teams. I'm an eternal optimist and I hope some of you out there are too.

But if this happens to KRBE, especially after Pat Fant himself created KIOL, and if KRBE, becomes a rock station then please tell me what would happen to KIOL?

Its been implied that Cumulus would move KIOL from the rimshot signal at 103.7 to the city grade 104.1 signal. What would happen to 103.7 is just a format change and new call letters which is any one guess what it would become. I really doubt we would see KRBE become Rock 104. Its very unlikely

I like the way you think, and I completely agree. All is coming to a sudden death, at which point a revival must occur.

Hmm. Not a bad idea...Pat Fant did say that he wanted to target an older demographic...
S&P are two of the oldest dudes in Houston radio. Might be a perfect fit!

What does it matter. Cumulus is taking a top property and will change it to a mediocre property in the Houston mix of radio stations. Nothing like taking a top station in its class and blowing it up. Yea, it would be great to have S&P back in the mornings. I'd listen, but the overall audience level will drop, sales will crater do to lesser ratings and advertiser hitlists. It really doesn't matter what they do as they blow up the current format because the reincarnation will be a disaster in all ways from programming to revenue compared to where they are right now. As I said earlier in this thread, Fant will eventually be canned and his reputation trashed as the future disaster fully unfolds. It's funny, but Fant probably knows this and is looking to pocket as much as he can while he can.

FYI: w&j are almost as old as S&P. I don't think we'll see S&P together again, it's the past.

To Dave:

I appreciate your comments about my rantings. However, I was one of the people telling you that sending letters and complaining wouldn't do a damn thing.

Roula and Ryan being dropped from Mix and Atom and Maria being dropped from KRBE are two separate things.

R&R were just replaced with a radio figurehead who was getting better numbers at basically the same demo. Sam always beat R&R in every book, so MIX was just getting itself slightly better morning numbers. I say slightly because I'm not expecting Sam to see any of his old numbers again.

Nixing Atom and Maria means nixing part of KRBE's bullet-proof top 40 format.

A&M cracked the top 5 in the overall demographics (up against every Houston station). In their specific 18-34, 12-25 demos, they had the 3rd most listened to morning show.

Roula and Ryan could never dream of those kinds of numbers. It's stupid business and I'm calling out Cumulus for it.

Imagine replacing Howard Stern in what I consider to be his heyday years ago with Carrot Top...that's what Cumulus has done here.

I don't mean this offensively toward Roula, Ryan or Eric...but they are nowhere near the top 40 morning show caliber of their predecesors.

I want to see how many of you actually will admit you were wrong when they do get the ratings. You'll probably just find something else to complain about.

I'll take that bet. here's the deal though. 2 full books. That will remove the bump just from the publicity. If they have a good two books and beat Sam, I will come on here and eat the ------ sandwich. I will apologize and will admit that I was wrong. I whole heartedly doubt I will have to do that, but I am up for it... why not?

Summer Book : June 29th - September 20th
Fall Book :September 21st - December 13th

Sure it's a little wait, but it will give them a chance to get settled and see what they're made of. Is the deal that they will beat Sam on KHMX? Is it they will improve the ratings of Atom & Maria? Or, better yet... all of the above? I'm in.

I will stand with Fo on this one...

If Roula and Ryan beat Sam's numbers after the second book comes out, I will admit I was wrong and take back my harsh comments about Cumulus-Atlanta.

However, I think the R&R fans will be the ones apologizing for
a) having a good morning show canned and replaced for a much lesser one
b) for never seeing the writing on the wall

Again, if any part of this new KRBE scheme works, especially R&R...I will apologize publicly and eat the shit sandwich
