A NEW AM STATION IN YELM?

Hey Crainbo-

Just FYI, the guy that made the post about KANY is the guy that OWNS KANY, so if he says it is heading towards the Mason/ Thurston market I suspect he would know. ;D

Bill has a CP for 33K lic to Montesano, so that should more than cover both of those counties, when built.

We have an app pending for 1140 - 5kw day 2.5 kw night - Aberdeen. KANY is currently licensed to Ocean Shores, not Aberdeen.

Heck of a time to start a new business. Hopefully, the new station in Yelm can weather the economic downturn.
I would rather see a "local" buyer operating a "live and local" station, than a corporation from New York City bringing in more syndicated programming.

It won't be easy. I would imagine KLAY 1180 Tacoma/Lakewood makes enough to keep the lights on, but not much more than that.

Wonder if they'll hire Roy Newcomer to run the place.... (Local Yelm Radio Geek that I knew in High School... Pretty interesting guy! )

If it goes HD, then I'll never get KBND 1110, KPNW 1120 or CKWX 1130! I could null it out, but it would still be in the mix. BTW, will the station be 24/7?

I would have to think it would be a daylight only station. They are on exactly the same frequency as KPNW which is a full time full power station, also one of the earliest stations in the northwest.

The Thurston/Mason market had too many AM stations BEFORE the FM move-ins.

680 (250 watts daytime)
920 (3 kw day, 7 watts night)
1030 (10 kw day, 1kw night)
1240 (1kw day/night)
1280 (1 kw day, 500 watts night)
1340 (1 kw)

KXXO had the FM field to itself for several years; then came KAYO (now Hispanic KDDS), KGY-FM, KFMY, KANY on the way, and at least one more in the future...

AMs cost so much to build, tower site permits are so hard to get; younger demos don't listen to AM, and older demos don't change their dial, I don't know how one can develop a business plan for a new AM station.

And AM HD is not likely to gain traction.

Don't forget KRXY 94.5 and The Eagle, 97.7 (what the heck are those call letters)

Also, too, don't forget KRXY 94.5 and 97.7 the Eagle (KEGL?)

KPNW is part of the original breakup of the clears, moving to that frequency and fulltime operation in 1968. In AM radio circles, that's not a long time ago. I find their signal to the south is much better than north.

I worked with Roy "Hillbilly Roy" at the then Country Gold Network (KJUN,KENU,KBLV,KWYZ,KTOL).

Interesting is right!

Thanks for the little memory.

KPNW (and CKWX splatter) will beat them to a pulp IN Yelm at night. 31.1 mV/m Nighttime Interference-free contour that barely covers Yelm. What a crock putting on a radio station with that much interference!

In the 70's KPNW had a reasonable (not great) nighttime signal in Portland but the signal really screams going SW. If you're in California west of the Sierra Nevada or in the eastern Pacific Ocean they're really cookin'. Not bad for a station that began life as a 10 kw daytimer on 1500 (then known as KPIR). I believe the original engineer who put 'em on the air on 1500 was George "Skip" Hathaway who also spent many years at KUGN. The construction of the Creswell xmtr site and resulting move to 1120 was largely the work of Ralph Cook who had been with KASH-AM.

Wish I knew! I haven't seen him since that whole place collapsed and turned into The New Y a 104.9. That was what, in 95,96?

Probably '97/'98. Y DID have one killer liner: "All Rhythm, No Blues...."
