A New Thought on DePetro

I

INTERcom99

Guest
I'll say it because nobody else has. I think this "controversy" is a joke. I don't think what Depetro said is that offensive. Did he say it to be edgy, maybe. Was it edgy, sort of. Who the f*ck cares? Is this really a big deal?

Infidel, the problem is that it was probably authorized by the suits. Depetro's ratings are in the tank - so if this "hail mary" pass (NO pun intended; for want of a better cliche) doesn't work, they can fire him anyway.

Though the Red Sox SHOULD care about hate speech, greenbacks usually calm everyone down. Radio is in a sorry state.

Joe, you're so off base. No manager would support what Depetro said, and that kind of comment will never result in higher ratings. Did you hear it? It was childish and without impact except to make you wonder why anyone would say something so dumb. DePetro has never caught on in Boston for exactly this reason - his cheapness. At least D&C were being funny when they went over the line.

And no manager is going to admit to it. Thus, if they didn't sanction it, they should fire him. A slap on the wrists (suspension) will only point the finger at Jason Wolfe for allowing it to happen. An "apology" won't do.
Because DePetro will just do something similar.

If this is his first offense, the suspension (hopefully without pay) may be appropriate but if he does it again
then firing should be considered. Though if the station management feels that he's just not cutting it
and should be let go on a combo of low ratings AND controversial remarks, then...

You'll notice D&C are still on the air. However if they p---ed off listeners/advertisers/FCC, etc., enough,
they'd be gone.

If the FCC feels what DePetro says is sufficiently offensive/hate-speech, then the fines will start coming
Entercom's way, and they'd have no excuse but to fire him. Or maybe he'll just fly to Sat-radio like
Stern. Shock jock John DePetro!

The FCC is reactive not proactive. If someone were to file a complaint about the remark, then they would investigate and fines (which have become huge) would be handed out. They don't go looking for offenders. There would be no question that the F A G word would be considered objectionable for broadcast in the mid-morning hours.

I just don't get how it is a 'racial slur'. Maybe Jason Wolfe just hit his auto-reply for complaints against D&C.

Really, Varulven, you are so off base and so completly full of it.
DePetro's ratings aren't "tanking"...Scott Allen Miller's are, so by your lame theroy, Scotto should be the one doing the "controversial" thing.

You truly show yourself as a non-radio wannabe, who had little to no success when you were in the business and is now just bitter and jealous.

DePetro isn't even in the proper Arbitron day part. Mid day is really 9a-2p, so when you see DePetro as 18th in market, you have to consider the fact that those are Rush's ratings as well. Break down hour by hour and the arbitron trend, DePetro is actually 2nd behind Dale and Holley, int he male 18-25 category.

This, based on the fact that he has NO lead-in from the morning show.

I loved your editorial to the Herald about these "great on-air hosts" coming of out broadcast school...really? Name one? Go ahead, name just ONE, that could hold their own on a 50,000 watt station in Boston.
So basically what you are proposing is to fire DePetro, hire an 18-23 yr old out of Emerson and thus create the next Jerry Williams, fantastic, should work..

Nothing will happen to DePetro, he will come back on-air and continue to do what he is doing, and you will continue to listen and become even more bitter and bitter becuase your short lived radio career amounted to nothing....

OH wait, you were number one on SUNDAYS! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Cause as we all know Sunday's are what advertising agency's, sales managers and program directors look at...
with those numbers you should have been syndicated

Another newbie from the peanut gallery

Another brand new "voice" spewing the same old rhetoric. Now we have "Bostonrose" - oh how unoriginal!

To set you, ahem, straight:

a)my gig is writing - the radio I want to do is a lost art. These days program directors want sheep, correct
that, robots. There's no concern for accuracy or knowing the subject matter.

b)I speak every year at the oldest college radio convention in the world, sometimes more if I attend the
regionals. Two weeks ago I was at the CMJ office, having been a subscriber to the biggest college radio
magazine for decades. That being said - there are some terrific talents coming up. They have better
delivery than John Depetro, they have more class, and they have a passion for the biz.

So you - with no name - can create a new Radio-info "account" and speculate - though your speculation borders on libelous. The fact is, we who love radio have learned to focus on college radio or NPR to hear
stuff that matters. Satellite is too expensive and defeats the purpose - I like turning a radio on for free and being entertained. Today, while settling into the new Varulven offices, 740 AM WJIB played. Some of the songs are very, very old, but overall, it was the best thing I could find on AM. So Bob Bittner gets the thumbs up and that's what I was listening to. It was professional and entertaining. THAT is what we are looking for. Call me all the names you want, you just become another component of the problem rather than the solution.

Notice, if you will, how Varulven failed to answer any of my questions, or address any of my points.
Instead, we find that he subscribes to a college radio magazine, yet fails to mention any of these "great voices" that could replace someone at a 50,000 watt radio station in Boston.

Fails to mention anything about his false claims about DePetro's ratings, because, quite frankly, he has no idea how to read a ratings book, probaly has never seen a diary.

He has the testicular fortitude to tell me that my claims border on being being libelous, yet can claim that Jason Wolfe and DePetro came up with the idea of usings the slur to help ratings.

You're a failure at radio, and you lurk on message boards complaning about the professionals that are making a living at it (and a pretty good one in DePetro's case).

It's not a matter or YOU being entertained, you may not find DePetro entertating, or Opie and Anthony and if you don't then don't listen to them.

But you do, you need to, because every time you listen, you say to yourself "I can do that better, I am better than him," yet you know you really aren't.

You a radio geek with an agenda against people who are good at it,
if you don't like DePetro, or WRKO don't listen

But you will, you will tune in tommorow and then jump on here and complain about how much he sucks,

so you see, you are not a solution,
Thanks for listening!

Listen,

without getting into the middle of the agendas at play I will say that I am sure that Wolfe et al in management were not aware of Depetros intention of calling him a "------", things like that are not pre planned discussed in advance and bounced off of management and hatched as a means of getting attention. If anything it was off the top of his head and is an indication Depetro himself rather than Entercom management as a whole. Im sure the attention that they're getting now is not what they would ever hope for yet I doubt that they're really worried about it given the history of the station and it's cluster mates. Most importantly there is no way to say that Depetro's ratings are tanking, it's just not true. In the thread titled "The Book" when someone asked me how he is doing I mentioned that in both men 25-54, and persons 25-54 the audience that I would assume that he is paid to attract, he has gone way up measurably. Like him or not, for better or for worse, for whatever reason he is catching on according to arbitron, this is from someone who actually SAW the Boston metro book today.

Wow, Boston Rose, i seem to have really hit a nerve with you. Again - you ramble on making no sense.

I have posted the names of radio professionals on this board multiple times. Not going to do it again.
People know who my faves are. Some are at the college level, some are currently on the air, some are legends
who are now off the air.

But chill, Bostonrose/John Depetro - chill - it's only the Boston Herald. When The Globe - with real readership - prints my letter, then you should start getting nervous. It's only the Herald. If you're jealous of someone getting ink in the Boston Herald you truly have no life, John.

John? yeah I'm John DePetro, damn you are so smart....

you should get a public access cable show....wait you already do :-*

No, they won't. The FCC fines stations for "indecency" (whatever that means; they still can't clearly define it to anyone's satiscation), and indecency does not include merely calling someone a name. Otherwise, they cannot (per the act of Congress that created them, not to mention the First Amendment) censor broadcast speech

Exactly and Im sorry one random "f-*-g" doesnt exactly scream of "hate speech" it's more of a fleeting utterance which they tend not to freak out over. EIther way he's right trying to define indecent when THE FCC cant even do it is a losing proposition.

It is a simple FACT that no one risks a highly paid position (and remember Wolfe is a VP, so the stakes are even higher) against being caught OK'ing such a thing, either secretly or otherwise.

And, as I've posted elsewhere, your take on DePetro's ratings is wrong. He has the highest ratings for generalized talk programming in the 9A-12N time slot, higher than either 96.9 or the 1200/1430 combination. Again, those are FACTS, straight from Arbitron.

You're right, no question. His take on Depetro's ratings are his OPINION, and what he wants the truth to be. nothing more. As I posted earlier I am sitting here with the Boston metro book in my hand and without quoting actual numbers since that is not allowed on this site, his numbers in both men 25-54 and persons 25-54 have gone up dramatically, Not to mention men 18+ where he is the top 5. PEeple with agendas hear what they want to hear and constantly confuse their opinion as fact AND what "everybody thinks" as well. Dpetro is a hack no doubt but saying his numbers suck because you wish it so does not make it so.

IMO it is rather silly to think that there was a meeting to get Depetro to use the 'f' word on the air. However, it's not a far reach to think that the PD might have told a host, "You go out there and be edgy, you zany cat" and the host, with aparently little else to say on the matter other than to call the man fat, called him a 'f..'. Depetro should not be canned for using that word, but he should be canned for having so little else to say.
