A River Runs Through The ABQ!

La Jefa has now moved to 102.9/840 but I also heard "KSFE Pecos" mentioned so it is also on 102.9 in Santa Fe. 101.3 is running promotions of the new frequency so a change is coming there for sure. Area went back to "shut up and rock" after flubbing the format the previous weekend but I noticed no activity on their Facebook or Twitter pages so it would seem like a change was coming. So now American General Media has two Regional Mexican stations in their cluster with Radio Lobo still going on 97.7. 102.9 KSFE had previously been the Santa Fe outlet for Lobo but it's now La Jefa.

I wonder what new format will 101.3 flip to.

Well it's been over a week and 101.3 is still running that loop of 30 second snippets of the same couple songs and announcing "La Jefa ciento dos punto nueve" going on 8 days now. Is it really necessary to drag out this long?

The websites for Kiss 97.3 and Coyote 102.5 still have the "under construction" pages up as well as the new site for La Jefa 102.9 while La Jefa 101.3 and Yo! 105.1 state that a new site is coming soon. Yo! appears be running without dj's. The morning show there has moved to Kiss which apparently was airing programming with a station in Texas that they are no longer tied to so the on-air line up may have changed. Ashley from Z106.3 has also joined Kiss. The Facebook and Twitter pages for Yo! has not had any activity for over ten days now. Don't know if that is a sign of a change or not. Earlier posts have mentioned that there may be reasons to keep the format or drop it. It seems that format is being dropped all over the country. Plus they compete with Hot 95.1 for an audience that may not be large enough for two stations. So maybe see what happens there if anything!

Z106.3 is running an automated format without personalities. The syndicated morning show from Phoenix is no longer there and it doesn't look like they have a facebook page which is unusual for a CHR. The new website just has a live stream and a twitter feed from billboard. It seems BB is trying to run this as cheap as possible against the well established KOB-FM. Is that really a good strategy?

I wonder what new format will 101.3 flip to.

Stations that Vanguard has operated before have mostly targeted older listeners. But these were AM stations. They still aim older with 103.7 but when their oldies station on 1600 got an FM translator it shifted to classic hits to compete with KABG and after it got poor ratings it went to an 80s alternative format and then briefly to 80s pop before it went dark two years ago (after a week long EDM stunt). So these guys may also want the "money demo" too. So it depends on who they will target.

And how will it make a dent on KMGA's ratings? KLQT's AC experiment failed miserably several years ago.
Is it mainstream AC or soft AC? The latter might work in that 55+ group where The Oasis also does well. 103.7 has sponsored several jazz concerts, got into Local Flavor Magazine AND do weekly 'Preview Parties' at Mykono's Cafe on Eubank.

This is a dozen songs they played earlier:
Anne Murray – Daydream beliver
The Police – Every breath you take
Faith Hill – There you'll be
Seals and Croft – Diamond Girl
Enrique Iglesias – Hero
Donna Lewis – I love you always forever
Orchestral Manoevres in the Dark – If you leave
Don Henly – Taking you home
Pat Benetar – We belong
Celine Dion – All by myself
James Ingram/Patti Austin – Baby come to me
Dido – Thank you

So basically it's what an AC station sounded like many years back. It will likely attract women over 50 but that may be the business model for Vanguard.

And how will it make a dent on KMGA's ratings? KLQT's AC experiment failed miserably several years ago.
Every station over the last several years that has tried to take on one of the established brands has resulted in low ratings around a 1 share. That was likely a factor in buying out the Univision cluster. Only KABG has successfully established itself. Aside from that American General had a classical station which is not a format used by commercial stations, a Spanish station in a low rated battle with La Jefa while the 106's tried unsuccessfully to challenge Kiss, KOB-FM, and most recently The Peak, and an AM station relying on a 99 watt translator. So adding Kiss and Coyote makes it more competitive with iHeart and Cumulus. But iHeart's current attempt to challenge Kiss with "real hip hop" is not doing much for the ratings neither has 104.7 in taking on Big 98.5. So any station that does not have a heritage brand is likely to keep struggling.

And putting the finishing touches on things, the KJFA call sign has finally moved to 840 Belen and KJFA-FM to 102.9 Pecos while KSFE-FM is now at 101.3 Albuquerque.
