A Step Back In Time

I've been going through some of my radio airchecks the last couple of days to send copies to a friend of mine out of state. I found this hidden gem among all the cassette tapes...an aircheck of a Birmingham AM dial scan from 1995.

Some noteworthy clips from the recording:

The original WYDE (AM 850) with Ken Michaels and their short-lived "True Country" (classic country format)

The "T.C and John Ed Show" on WERC

WAPI during their pre-news/talk days as "Unforgettable Favorites" (Adult Standards)

AM 1260 (the current WYDE-AM) as WDJC

The original WAGG on 1320 before their move to AM 610

AM 1480 as WLPH (now WQOH)

Missing from the dial scan are most of the suburban AMs (WURL/Moody, WSMQ/Bessemer, and WGTT/Alabaster).

Here's the link to the aircheck:

That is some good stuff, like hearing WAGG on 1320 and WJLD when they where touch.I have a few tapes of WENN 107.7 laying around the house from the early to mid 1990's still sounding good.Boy I miss those old stations like I 95,kicks 106 and my favorite WENN. urban radio to me is not as good in Birmingham as It was before .Really all the stations have gone down,WZZK has gone down Just as Magic 96 has gone down.Even though I do not listen to magic or WZZK,I think there programing can be better because they have been on so long and they should not be flipped to another format.Dick should have not flipped WENN for the X they should have tried to fix It.WENN would have came back in ratings over time. All those stations from the 60's-the 90's were unique and I wish they all could come back, but that Is just my wish

Thanks for sharing! I can't remember if that was before or after WATV moved from their Finley Blvd. transmitter site to the one in Pratt City. At one time, WATV and WJLD were both in stereo. Come to think of it, 1260 was, too, when they were Legends. It was a good time to own an AM stereo radio in Birmingham, lol.
