A strong Rumor?

Because CBS is such a big supporter of Oldies these days.... ::)

The "rumor" I heard is a bit different as far as format, but similar regarding the Zone's fate. I can't imagine it will take too long for us to find out.

What is the "rumor" you've heard?

Anyone in the market knows that it's just a matter of time because tanking stations don't live forever. Just ask KZAP, KXOA, KHYL, and the list goes on. It sucks cuz I like their format, they just need to mix it up a little more. Oh, and Keith Brooks is my baby daddy.

Changes ARE coming to KZZO. Unfortunately, and this being 4-20 (if you understand), oldies and Mr. Cox will have nothing to do with it...

Yet.

I can't imagine KZZO doing a KROY oldies format with Tony. Didn't Boss Radio do the same thing and go down in flames less that a year ago?

They didn't do oldies! They tried to be way too rock oriented and it killed them. What they were doing was hardly oldies by any stretch of the imagination. Who needs them to be oldies anyway 92.1 is doing just fine right now, hands down! Have you listened? They are great with the music mix. KZZO as Oldies KROY would be a silly thing to do that era has passed. Tony Cox is a dinosaur to boot! He should stick to voiceover work it suits him just fine.

Wow, you'll get old too. But age has nothing to do with talent. There are plenty of successful people still on the air that are a lot older than Cox.

As for oldies, it's only successful now in a handful of markets. Problem is that most PD's don't know how to do it right and conglomerates don't have any patience.

Companies operating in Sacramento are especially quick to pull the plug on formats that don't grow fast, and oldies as we know it is really on the decline. It needs to evolve, and that's hard to do when you've only got a few months... Most companies don't start with a strategic plan. They just throw the music on and then start thinking about hiring a PD and staff. By then it's already too late. Still there are successes. Look at Oldies 102 in Chico. Small company with big numbers because the PD knows music. As I recall he was once the PD at the old KROI-FM in the late 70's...

CBS/Pittsburgh, PA's 93-7 KROCK, just flipped to a FreeFM format called 93-7 The Zone "Pittsburgh's Man Station!". Could 100.5 do the same? Move Carolla or bring O&A back, JV & Elvis, bring Kidd Chris back or move Don & Mike, Leykis, Loveline, John & Jeff....

Move Carolla or bring O&A back, JV & Elvis, bring Kidd Chris back or move Don & Mike, Leykis, Loveline, John & Jeff....

That lineup is somewhat reminiscent of a CBS station gone by. Don't count on Don & Mike leaving KHTK. Without them the "sports" station would be nothing. O&A... possible. Kidd Chris... maybe. Loveline wouldn't have to go anywhere. J & J... uh, thanks, but I hope not. Carolla... CBS would have to fight Entercom on this one, yes? Don't know of JV & Elvis.

All that in mind, Free FM in Sacramento wouldn't be that much of a stretch... more like "deja vu".

I have always felt a triple A station would do well at 100.5. Like a KFOG type station.

Prior to The Zone that station was The Point. The billboard was "Songs you've never heard of".....or something like that. Who came up with that doozy???

CBS just did put on a new AAA brand in Washington DC on the 94.7 Frequency. "94-7 The Globe."

Hasn't The Zone, though, gone through enough AAA phases in its life to show that AAA isn't gonna work in Sacramento? I would think they would go for a more radical change. I think there's enough talk out there that you could do a Free-FM without Don and Mike or Adam Carolla. My money's on 100.5 Free-FM.

I don't know if a strategic format search has come up with a AAA hole in Sacramento.

KFOG is very different from what "the Point" was. The point was positioned as a hip "songs you don't know by bands you've never heard of station"

KFOG is based on a sophisticated mix Current Alternative and non redneck Classic Rock.

As far as Free FM goes...Here we go again! I'm suprised at CBS Pittsburg, but then again, they have a mainstream News/Talk on FM don't they. Here's a slogan for KZZO if it goes the way of talk. 100.5...Listener-Free FM!

BTW: It's nice to see KIFR finally beat KSFM in the SAN FRANCISCO Book! :-*

Carolla is on Westwood One, I think, which is owned by CBS. Entercom would have to fight CBS to retain him when the contract comes up. KWOD should have it's own local show that's music driven, similar to what Live 105 and KROQ does.

Haha! I like that one! Of course, it's not that different from "100.5... the Listener-Free Zone" that it is now.

Here's a longshot... but it's sure to garner great publicity and probably some support from Arnold et al. They could go green like that station back east... I forget which one. Was it in NY? Anyway, that seems to come with automatic publicity these days. Could you just imagine... the Governator and every CA politician endorsing your station for being eco-friendly? Every college student in Davis sporting your recyclable window cling. Mad press and props from the local media. Might even make the national news. Hmm.... Sounds crazy but... maybe not such a bad idea.

unless you're syndicated across the country, who cares about a station getting national tv coverage unless it's something negative...their market is Sacramento not NY...just because a station gets media coverage doesn't mean people are gonna be loyal listeners...The End had national press coverage...how's their ratings?? the same?? haha

True... for the most part. But keep in mind, if a station owned by CBS makes a positive splash locally, or nationwide, CBS is likely to be more invested in the format. It's their MO to create cookie cutter stations. They're always looking for something to clone - the easy way out. Furthermore, corporate radio is very much into positive press these days... and in great need of it, as well. Particularly in Sacramento, going "green" gains many kudos from the community. This may, or may not, translate to ratings. However, if they actually did it with a format that had some substance it could be a powerhouse.

Then again, this was a somewhat tongue-in-cheek suggestion. ;)
