A stupid question from an East Coast viewer

4:20pm sucks just as badly. Someone is going to always be on the eastern or western edge of a time zone. I don't get Indiana's issue...and I doubt the DOT is going to approve some checkerboard scheme (Wayne Co. on eastern, Delaware on Central, Howard on Eastern, Cass on Central, etc.)

Louisville was on Central Time, I believe until 1961.

I have another question. Why do some cable channels,
especially the History Channel, run shows at 8 ET/
9 PT?

The more I hear about this it sounds like the Indiana legislature didn't finish the job. Along with voting to observe daylight time, they should have voted to put the whole state in one time zone, whether it's Eastern or Central.

Is this a record?

Longest discussion on a non-political thread? Well done, scooter!

If History only has the one feed nationwide, maybe they repeat the program later on at night, at 9PM PT, 12 Midnight ET.

They used to, and A&E did the same thing.

The show aired at 8 ET/5 PT, it then was
repeated four hours later at 12 ET/9 PT.
Except they didn't promote the 5 PT (or
the 12 ET), probably thinking that time
was too early (late).

Both nets how have split feeds (east/west)
so the show is on at 8 ET/PT, 7 CT, and
either 6 or 9 MT, depending on the cable
company...

...or as I like to say about Cox in Phoenix,
"the stupid cable company" since they have
this love affair with left coast feeds which
in the winter means Pacific plus one hour,
and results in shows being on too late
(at least for those of us with a 5:30am alarm).

Just love those prime time cable shows on from
9pm to midnight! (Now turning sarcasm mode off.)

You haven't seen some of the threads on the Los Angeles radio board.
______________

Here I go, adding one more. I've been hearing for
several years now that Utah would like to stay on
Mountain Standard Time year-round, so I suppose if
their legislature ever follows through, Salt Lake
City will be on the same schedules as Phoenix and
Tucson.

As far as Indiana and Maine, which have been the main
topics on this thread go, Indiana viewers are going to
be impacted if most of the state is on Central Time;
we're talking about 7-10 PM primetime year-round, network
news at 5:30 year-round, late local news at 10 year-round...
EXCEPT in a few Ohio River counties. There may be some
confusion, but it really seems pretty neat and orderly.
The problem comes if the state allows counties to choose
their time zone, and travelers are moving back and forth
between the two. As for Maine, there doesn't seem to be that
much support for moving to Atlantic Standard Time, but if
the state does so, it's going to have a greater impact on
viewing habits than will be the case in Indiana. Now we're
talking about primetime starting at 9 PM, network news at
7:30, late local news at midnight, and soaps running up to
5 PM. That will be a big adjustment. But I wouldn't put
money on a time-zone change in Maine just yet.

I think a lot of us are simply interested in how all this
is going to play out.
Edited by bpatrick on 10/16/05 02:44 PM.

Re: Is this a record?

Even if Indiana doesn't go to one time zone, this thing of letting each county pick their time zone shouldn't be allowed to happen. There should be as close as possible to a reasonable line to divide the state rather than one that zig zags all over the state according to the whim of each county.

Although I've made my comments on what Indiana should do about their time zone problems and daylight time, for my part I think that daylight time should be year round and nation wide or not have it at all. I'd prefer the latter.
