Why should I keep coming up with song titles? (Probably because it gives me more opportunities to make these introductions that are just so gosh-darned cute 'n' clever! :D )

Why Have You Left the One You Left Me For -- Crystal Gayle

There's a song running through my head right now that goes something like "Why (would? should?) I cry, (when? if?) you (don't? won't) really love me?" I want to say Grass Roots, but it doesn't show up in their discography. I can't find any matches using Google. Anyone else recognize this '60s/'70s earworm of mine?

It doesn't sound familiar. The first songs that came to my lil' mind were Freddy Fender's If You Don't Love Me and Robert John's If You Don't Want My Love...but they certainly don't sound like the Grass Roots. Could it be Why Should I Cry from the Tymes' 1964 Somewhere album? I can't find the lyrics online.

Why Trust You - Alice Cooper
Why Try To Change Me Now - Eydie Gorme
Why Try To Change Me Now - Frank Sinatra
Why When Love Is Gone - Originals
Why Won't You Talk To Me - Gerry Rafferty
Why You - Benny Goodman
Why You Treat Me So Bad - Club Nouveau
Why You Wanna See My Bad Side - Smokey Robinson

Widetrackin'--Fabulous Pack
Wiggle Wobble--Les Cooper
Wiggle Wiggle--Accents
Wiggling Blonde--Bubba Ford
Wild Cherry--Don Cherry
Wild Honey--Beach Boys
Wild Night--Van Morrison
Wild One--Bobby Rydell
Wild Thing--Troggs
Wild Weekend--Rockin' Rebels
Wild Willie--Annette

Widow Maker -- Jimmy Martin
Will It Go 'Round in Circles -- Billy Preston
Will the Wolf Survive -- Los Lobos, Waylon Jennings
Will You Love Me Tomorrow -- Shirelles, Carole King

Mister CT, I assumed you had already checked all the singles titled Why Should I Cry so I was trying to find album tracks with that title. In Los Angeles, KHJ and KRLA and KDAY never played the Gentrys song and I had never heard it. I'm glad you found it and shared the link. Good ol' YouTube!

Mister radioman mentioned Annette's Wild Willie. I decided I'm going to give you the...the....no, I won't say it---it's just too easy. :D

Willie - Hank Cochran
Willie & Laura Mae Jones - Dusty Springfield
Willie & The Hand Jive - Johnny Otis
Willie Can - Sue Thompson
Willie Jean - Sunshine Company
Willie Jones - Bobby Bare
Willie Pass The Water - Ripple
Willie Seton - Chad Mitchell Trio
Willie The Wandering Gypsy & Me - Tex Ritter

I'm surprised KHJ wasn't on it. Since it's stayed with me all these years, I can only assume that sister station WRKO Boston played it for a few weeks. I was hardly ever listening to WMEX by March 1970. At that point, I was actually spending more time with progressive WBCN than 'RKO. And there's no was 'BCN was playing the Gentrys.

Gee, if only there was a website that had all the 68RKO surveys! Hey, wait a minute.....

http://surveys.wrko.org/wrko_700108.htm

On January 8, 1970, Why Should I Cry debuted at #30. The next week it jumped to #26. Then it jumped to #19.....and magically disappeared. The RKO stations did that a lot---dropping songs that were still climbing---so their chart didn't get "stale." I remember when the Rascals' How Can I Be Sure was number one on KHJ; it dropped to #6 and then dropped completely off the chart!

I listed some "Willie" titles; now for the alternate spelling:

Willy Don't Be Silly - Buju Banton
Willy Jones - Susan Raye
Willy Nilly - Rufus Thomas
Willy Of Winsbury - Pentangle
Willy Quit Your Playing - Billy Grammer
Willy The Wandering Gypsy & Me - Waylon Jennings (He changed the spelling of Tex Ritter's Willie)
Willy's Won'tcha - Bonnie Raitt

Pretty sure WRKO did that with the Temptations' "All I Need." Loved that song and was disappointed when, one week, it just wasn't getting played anymore. Sure enough, it had gone from No. 8 to oblivion.

Winchester Cathedral (nasal sound) :D - New Vaudeville Band
Wind Beneath My Wings - Bette Midler
Winds of Change - Scorpions
Windy - Association

Will It Go Round In Circles - Billy Preston
Will You Love Me Tomorrow - Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons
Will You Still Love Me - Chicago
Willow Weep For Me - Chad & Jeremy
Wind Chimes - The Beach Boys
