AAA 103.7 KHJK sold to EMF.

Assuming we can believe this, it's good that the format will be Air1 as it gives the market a clear alternative to the music on KSBJ. K-Love probably would have been too similar.

KHJK chugging along as usual this weekend, with no indication of an impending flip. However, I did have an ironic chuckle over the "103.7FM, where the music is going" liner.

Will be kind of sorry to see it go, as it was (for me) the only tolerable music station on the commercial portion of the FM band here.

It looks very premature, since at last report no application for the sale of KHJK has been filed with the FCC (or of KFNC, for that matter). Is the PD assuming too much, or is Air 1 getting way ahead of themselves?

While the last break I heard from Steve Robison didn't explicitly say so, it had all the hallmarks of someone who knew he would never crack the mic on that station ever again.

That is what I thought after hearing the same thing. Come Tuesday morning, KHJK will be no more and EMF will be leasing the frequency.

KHJK how I will miss thee.....

I dont think RBruceCarter will be impressed with AIR1,, its 80% ccm and 20% harder stuff. Like a bright version of K-Love.

103.7 should say goodbye on Friday when they present their big show at the Woodlands called, appropriately enough, "The Last Summer on Earth." Ideally, they'd broadcast the show in its entirelty like WDRE in Philadelphia did with Pearl Jam on their final night, and the last sounds on "Houston's Adult Alternative" would be the crowd chanting "103.7" or some such.

Yeah - I noticed. Very sad. I note references to "Jesus Freaks" and "evil radio" on here. I'd like to think the membership here is not guilty of anti-Christian bigotry. EMF made a business move, so did the KHJK owners. EMF is no more or less evil than anybody who moved in and bought a station. Certainly nobody would throw racial slurs at a Hispanic or Black group that has bought a station in the Houston area.

As far as Air-1 is concerned, they are more listenable than K-Love or KSBJ's primary format. It doesn't take much adjustment to the play list to turn around CCM AC into CCM CHR. 20% might be enough, if it is the clunkers that go - the plodding 4:4 beat praise and worship clunkers that is. Replacing them with upbeat artists, similar to WAY-FM. I find EMF's move very gutsy, given the influence KSBJ has on the entire CCM format. They either (1) think KSBJ is vulnerable, (2) KSBJ will buy them out at a premium for NGEN, or (3) they are re-imaging 103.7 for the Beaumont market, largely ignoring Houston. I think the last is the most likely - since Air-1 (and K-Love) are usually aimed at small markets that don't have CCM at all. And when a market already has a K-Love (Beaumont does), EMF buys a second frequency for Air-1. Granted, it is usually a translator, and they've bought a monster, which leads me to think it is a profit making move - embarrass KSBJ by doing up-tempo CCM in the very parts of Houston where NGEN is not - KSBJ see profits slipping away, gets out their cash and buys out EMF to eliminate competition and fill in NGEN. KSBJ is bound to know that HD radio is a flop, they desperately need NGEN in the North parts of Harris County even if 103.7 doesn't hit the affluent Cypress area well, they can deal with that later after they have covered Liberty, Woodlands, Conroe, etc. So the potential is there for a really big payday for EMF, and really big coverage increase for NGEN. Smart investment by EMF.

I am critical of most things you post around here, but this comment is pure gold. Very well said.

+1. Whether you agree with how EMF handles its stations or not, that doesn't constitute "evil" radio or their followers as "Jesus freaks".

Did anyone find out when this is happening? I've got the recorder cued up and waiting. Midnight, perhaps? 6AM tommorrow?

One interesting sideline - one of the best Christian songs of all time that you have never heard - is "Jesus Freak" by DC Talk. It is one of the most powerful, most effective evangelical witness and spiritual strength songs of all time. KSBJ won't play it - it is Christian rock and they are Christian Delilah. Too bad - I've heard of many people coming to Christ - or back to Christ - after hearing it only once.

WCIE - before its untimely death - played it for that reason, even though they were Christian AC / very lite Christian CHR. With resistance to the CHR part. The last song ever played on WCIE was Jesus Freak.

Haven't heard a peep. My money is on midnight, but I don't plan to be awake to find out.

That's one of your better quotes.
