AAA needed here

I'd pick KERA--which isn't rated by Arbitron.

Yes it is, but the data is not combined with the commercial stations. Arbitron was going to start combining the non-comm stations with the comm stations, beginning with the Fall '06 books. Long story short, those plans were scrapped.

The Philadelphia PPM ratings have been released to the media and they DO list non-commercial stations!

As for AAA, even the heritage stations don't pull the ratings they used to, especially in the largest most ethnic markets such as WXRT/Chicago. One heritage AAA that has been thriving recently is KTCZ/Minneapolis, but the Twin Cities is one of the most lilly white large makets.

Even if KZPS isn't technically an AAA, it's music mix seems like a country fried AAA to me. Now that they are part of the landscape, this would seem like the worst time for another station to try AAA in DFW. A 1 share seems realistic, which is why nobody will do it.

I tend to disagree. We can be harsh and very critical at times. To swim
with sharks, unfortunately, sometimes, you have to be a shark.

But perhaps you haven't noticed.....

Radio is a very small (in terms of employees) business. It is very much a
"what goes around comes around" business, so even though you might
like to tell that news director, PD, manager, whatever, to go [EDIT] themselves,
it's probably not a good idea. All radio folks do is jump from station to station
in big markets, so you don't want to end up being the idiot who just called
the manager an [EDIT], walk out, get a job across town, and find out 3
months later that your new PD or manager is the dude you just told to
stick it where the sun don't shine.

One of the reasons many of us hide behind fake names and monikers on
here..... in case we do want to criticize people or media entities.

Overall though, we try and make a go of it, and be generally friendly. In the
long run, that's the best policy.

On the other hand, if you can't take an occasional jab or laugh at
yourself, you do not need to be in the business.

So does Maximiser data, which for 10 years has included all the non-coms. Only the now-defunct printed book and the Arbitrends did not include non-coms.

Maybe that's the problem.

You guys want to be friends with each other, and not hurt each others feelings, and just keep repeating the beliefs of the herd mentality (The big companies (Cheap Channel, Cume-less and Can't Braodcast schitte)(And aren't you guys SO clever with those names) all suck, consultants suck, playlists suck, succesful formats suck, pretty much everything that anybody is doing succesfully anywhere at anytime sucks)...
What I meant by friendly is, as in lets keep it clean. The testicle reference was unnecessary.

LOL-
I somehow ended up on Mix's mailing list. So every few months I get their mailing about their big contest. Which the last few have been 'win a purse a day'. Nice purses (so I'm told) from Burberry(?), Coach, YSL, etc...

Do you seriously think that's a contest designed to attract men to your station? Or do you think that the suits at Mix know exactly who they have listening to them, and they're catering to their core...

And testicle-less was the cleanest description of the type of guy that's going to listen to the crap that the Mis is throwing out...If that offends you, you probably need to recalibrate out of the 70's- there's MANY more words or phrases I could have used that are much more profane than that...

When looking at a AAA in DFW, check the level of success of AAA in Atlanta, another southern, black/latino heavy market. After a good summer 06 they move out the morning guy and the afternoon guy, and become very heavy on female talent, become music focused and are poised to hit a 1.5. But somehow they go on and one would expect are billing well, as they'd be heavy 25-54.

So maybe (absolutely) a big 12+ number doesn't even make any difference with that type of station more than any other.

It's a leap of faith to assume a station in the 1s 12+ is doing well 25-54. Stations in the 1s 12+ are rarely in the top 10 of any demo.

The new CBS VP Dan Mason has admitted that many of the stations in his roster are "ratings challenged". I wouldn't be surprised if several of them change formats, maybe even the AAA you are thinking about in ATL, depending on how they're billing.

Re. AAA: Has anyone ever listened to KGSR in Austin? A true adult rock station that plays new music in addition to the classics. Would it work in DFW? Or is Austin so much more laid back, music savvy, etc., that KGSR is unique?

According to research consultants, no. Unfortunately, we are a bunch of gun-totin', mullet wearin', 7th grade educated, ultra-right wing rednecks.

There is a reason why Dallas has a reputation for $30,000 millionaires and superficial people.....It's because it's true! For every one REAL music lover in this market, there are 10 gals with fake boobs trolling Addison or Uptown for a rich husband....Or a guy maxing his credit cards on a BMW lease and apt in Uptown out trolling for the trophy wife. True artists like Robert Cray, Lucinda Williams, and James McMurtry can't sell out the Granada. For a true AAA to work, you MUST have a strong base of people passionate about the music. Are there enough of those folks in DFW??? Or does the cute lil family in Plano or Southlake just wanna shop in their strip malls and eat at their chain restaurants and hear the hits????

You're missing KBCO, KMTT and KFOG, all heritage AAA stations, that are in the top 3, 25-54 in their respective markets. Because of their erratic programming and ratings history, WXRT isn't a good indicator of the format's national strength.

I agree, drove thru Chicagoland recently and found XRT to be "out there" compared to the many AAA stations I've listened to, didn’t find it appealing.

Haven't heard mention of the squealer out in California, KPIG, they do a great job! http://www.kpig.com

And the below 92 on the FM dial AAA/Eclectics, some that come to mind:

KCRW, Santa Monica (LA) http://www.kcrw.org

WNCW, Ashville, NC http://www.wncw.org

WXPN, Philadelphia (World Café which aired on KERA originates there) http://www.xpn.org

WFUV, NYC http://www.wfuv.org
