Zwerling is nuts, and he couldn't have put together a worse lineup for a PTer, but I remember a few years I spoke to him about his station. He kept telling me how much better KSCO was than cross-town KNRY, which brokered most of the day, and called them a "paytoilet". I still love that term.

Also, yes, KSCO is something of a joke, but just like the 2 talkers in Riverside-San Bernardino get clobbered by KFI, it's hard to compete. That's why these almost-embedded markets have so many schlock stations with infomercials and other crap. It's not that people in Monterey aren't listening to Rush, it's that they're listening to him on KSFO. And as to Savage being "too expensive", that's either untrue or shows ZBS' ineptitude... TRN is more than happy to take barter.

Cross-town KRXA is a good operation. Yeah, their ratings suck, too, but they got a pretty decent (day) stick for not much $$, and are doing well from what I hear. They have passion. Peter Collins won't be the next Ed Schultz, but he's a pro and knows the business. I woudn't listen to the station, but at least it's not a looney bin like the competition. Although, from what I hear, the new KOMY sounds pretty good for an oldies station.

Well, it's very interesting to see all those people now calling Zwerling 'NUTS', but I tend to think that he wasn't viewed as that 'nutty' when he put some AAR hosts on. IIIRC, some bloggers even wen't so far to proclaim that move as 'brave' and 'imaginative'.
::)

Hmmm..."some bloggers even wen't so far to proclaim that move as 'brave' and 'imaginative'"?

Got any links for these 'bloggers'?

Yeah, I knew that one was coming. I looked and alot of those 'bloggers' do not carry 'archives'. ;)

that's why I typed 'If I Recall Correctly'.

Hit a little close to the bone there, FI? ;D

Uhhh... no.

here's a little gem from a very close source:
http://ltradio.blogspot.com/2005/07/komysanta-cruz-picks-up-aar.html

that is essentially a link to this:
http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/archive/2005/July/13/local/stories/04local.htm

Funny, I dont see anything here calling the Zwerlings 'brave' , nor do I find anything here calling him 'nuts'.

He only gets called 'nuts' when he pulls AAR off. NO mention of his 'blistering diatribes ' against liberals from the LT blog or the Sentinel. In fact it says :
"Move over, Rush Limbaugh.

As of Monday morning, liberals can tune into talk radio stars Al Franken and Randi Rhodes on KOMY-AM 1340.

The deal was finalized Tuesday, said Michael Zwerling, who owns both stations.

"People have been asking for it for years, and we’re going to give it to them, big time," Zwerling said.

Since Air America launched in March 2004, Zwerling said he’s been trying to broadcast the programming throughout the Monterey Bay Area.

But network representatives wanted Zwerling to carry more of their programming than he bargained for, meaning he would have to cut some local news shows.

"We were able to convince them that six hours of prime time is plenty in Santa Cruz," Zwerling said. "We didn’t want to commit our whole station because we wanted to leave some space for locals."

An independent voter who says he leans slightly right of center, Zwerling believes "there are always two sides to every story."

Yeah, that's one nutty guy. Sheesh. Same old pattern again. ::)

Is there a point to all of this? If so, what exactly are you trying to say? Sounds to me like you're arguing against yourself. KOMY picked it up, the paper reported it, and I cited it. So what?

BTW: Thanks for reading!

Your quite welcome. the point that your avoiding is thus: all the nasty things you said about Zweriling AFTER he pulled AAR were not in your 'blog' when he decided to put them on. At the very least, you should have pointed out to your 'readers' that this particular station owner had a long and colorful history, but somehow all the allegations you make about his post-AAR are absent in your own blog archives. You blast Maloney for leaving inmportant details out about his dealings with Zwerling, yet you don't recognize that you linked to an article praising Zwerling from the Sentinel. The Sentinel paints Zwerling as a station owner that just wants to provide a market need ( that wasnt there ), an independant voter, a businessman, anything but a 'right wing nut'.

This exact scenario played out in Atlanta when Joe Weber bought the AAR affiliate and pulled thier programming here. These same ricidulous allegations.

But, I'm sure now that you and Zweriling are pen pals, we can expect these hystrionics to receed. ::)

The early days of my blog were basically cut-and-paste. Nothing fancy. As time went on, I started throwing in a little more flair and research. And whenever new stations pick up the format, I just post the facts. Stuff like frequency, ERP, where to find it, what they're carrying, etc. I really didn't know anything about Zwerling until he started getting ridiculous in the media. I didn't find it noteworthy. Then I did a little more searching. Interesting to note that I've never seen you mention him prior to this thread. And now you're practically nominating him for sainthood. Does this make you a hypocrite?

I'm sorry. Next time, I'll clear all my blog entries with you to get your approval. ::)

Sorry if pointing out your hypocrisy makes you mad.

I'm not 'sainting' Zwerling, weber or any other station owner. I haven't even received any 'funny emails' from him. I simply pointed out a pattern that has emerged whenever certain station owners drop AAR. You have only proven the point, FI.

You say "I really didn't know anything about Zwerling until he started getting ridiculous in the media". Yet the first 'offense' he had ( that you enjoy pointing out ) is his 'blistering commentary' (apology) made to the public when he fired Peter Werbe, a self described 'anarchist' that said some very caustic remarks on the heels of 9-11. Lets see, that was October 2001.

Then, when he pulls AAR off, you suddenly 'discover' these and other 'outrageous' remarks. It sure sounds to me like you went digging for dirt on this guy, and consulted about bunch of other 'blogs' in order to find it. The Sentinel gives a pretty fair accounting. Others that know the guy personally attest to his 'openmindedness' and his 'business sense'.

Hey, it's your pity party. I'm sure Zwerling and any other station owner that pulls the plug on AAR are as evil as you claim ::)

Why aren't you admitting your hypocricy? You never mentioned (or heard of) the guy until this thread. If he's so great, why haven't you been singing his praises all along? Pot, say hello to kettle. ;D

It's just too bad you've had to resort to spouting gibberish in order to fight your way out of losing arguments, but hey, to each their own.

BTW: The part that got edited had something to do with being indifferent to the posterior of a common rodent. The Mod didn't like that analogy.

lets review:
you called this guy 'nuts' said "They've never had a good reputation with left-leaning listeners in town. While some of their intentions may have been good, they always found a way to piss them off.

Not too long after they added the programming (which consisted of three shows and a lot of negotiations with AAR), they lashed out at their listeners on-air, calling them 'hypocrites'."

You claimed "Zwerling was a cancer for them, and both parties are better served having severed ties."

Yopu finally add when confronted with your own words :"The early days of my blog were basically cut-and-paste. Nothing fancy. As time went on, I started throwing in a little more flair and research."

Uh huh . 'Flair' . I suppose thats why Zwerling suggested you write screenplays.

It's true, I didnt give a rats posterior about Zwerling until I noticed your nice little hatchet job. The anger you displayed at getting outed by your own lame blog is typical. thanks for playing. I cannot wait for your next victim, is almost guaranteed ;)

I for one said Zwerling was nuts because he IS nuts. This is from a personal perspective. Try talking to the guy. It has nothing to do with ANY of his programming. He's just as nuts running KSCO.

Well, let me help you guys out.

http://www.nonstopradio.com/danger.html

There's a partial list of 'progressive stations' that these 'nuts' feel are in danger of being flipped.

Now, quick, google up some dirt about these owners, you know 'for the cause', and all.... ::)

Umm, he said "it has nothing to do with ANY of his programming". KJCB is speaking as a radio person, not as an activist.

Mr. Zwerling's reputation is well-known, and dates long before he decided to flip his second AM station to liberal talk.

On the other hand, there are many who would speak up for him as well. I've never met the man, so I won't take sides here.

With so many 'petition's going around, that's kind of a grey area.

you'd be hard pressed to tell sometimes ::)

Also, it doesnt help that when AAR flips off, so many 'radio people' flip out.

And thanks for speaking for KJCB ;)

Well, OMW is correct; some people, as usual, want to make this a political forum.

How do you talk about political talk radio without discussing politics?

The way OMW, myself, and many others do - based on a host's talent and figures rather than poltical leanings. That means more positive than negative comments about hosts like Stephanie Miller and negative postings about hosts like Michael Reagan. Just like the guy who claimed Glenn Beck was a nobody when he had 140-some clears back in 2003, including more CC powerhouses than he does now. That same person would probably open a thread to tell us how great Peter B. Collins' show is doing in syndication.

Then I said
How do you talk about political talk radio without discussing politics?
To which you replied
more positive than negative comments about hosts like Stephanie Miller and negative postings about hosts like Michael Reagan.

So let me understand. We can make references to the politics of talk radio hosts as long as most of the comments are positive?

You're misrepresenting what I'm saying and you know it. Try quoting my entire post rather than cherry picking. The point is that people who consistently talk about how wonderful all conservative, or progressive, hosts are doing are probably idealoguses. There is a way to take objective positions, but you know that and are trying to attack me with select snippets to make your partisan rants appear reasonable. Please show where I have taken sides politically on any consistent basis. I think you'll have a hard time doing so, because I maintain strong positions on both sides of the aisle.

What KJCB said.

Of course, I'm a bit of an oddity - I listen to pretty much ALL kinds of talk radio, from conservative to liberal to non-political.

I like to talk here about the host's radio skills, ability to build an audience, etc...not about whether they are "right or wrong" on issue A, B or C.

But in forums like these, it's often dragged into the usual Left vs. Right vs. Left Shouting Match. All (type) hosts are evil. All (type) hosts are good...like Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage exist on the same plane, or Stephanie Miller and, say, Mike Malloy.

I realize this makes me odd, and I realize it makes it difficult for folks like evnlee to figure this out.

I know who KJCB is, and his background. His comments about the owner of KOMY were not at all based on politics, and in fact, he's been making comments similar to those long before that owner started running liberal talk on that radio station. It's not exactly a secret to those in the market.

But...no. EVERYTHING has to be politically motivated! Sheesh...

I get it. You guys are *ahem* objective, like so many of our esteemed journalists in the media today.

My pointing out that station owners that flip AAR sometimes get bad press, whether deserved or not, is going to be seen as 'political' by some. I will give Baroosk credit~ he knows he has a bias and he knows I do too. But he is not silly enough to claim he doesn't. I don't as well. And he is willing to agree( with many ) that you cannot discuss political raido wothout getting too 'political'.

By all means, continue with your noble and objective blogging. ::)
