ABC Pulls Jimmy Kimmel Live

Honestly, it looks like ABC was completely caught off guard.

That being said, I would not be surprised to see ABC cut ties with Nexstar and Sinclair when existing contracts run out (their groupwide affiliation deal with Sinclair runs out next year) and start winding down operations as a linear network.
It was basically a targeted harrassment campaign on affiliates after Carr's appearance on Benny Johnson's "The Left Can't Meme" TPUSA podcast. The callers to station switchboards weren't angry Kimmel viewers who waited until yesterday afternoon to call. Maybe I missed if Sinclair's statement was posted in the forum, but apparently a donation to TPUSA is being...well I can't say what I want to say about these fine Christian young men

Their bigger issue is the actors union.
Why is that? Network shows for this season have been filmed already. ABC/Disney/etc. needs advertisers and subscribers to stick with them.

The American Federation of Musicians has issued a statement:

Honestly, last night, we saw the death knell of the network-affiliate model.

It was already underway, but this should certainly accelerate it.

Big Media owners have already moved nearly anything worth watching from both network TV and their cable channels over to their paid streaming platforms, and they're preparing to paywall whatever is left OTA as soon as they can get the FCC to kill ATSC 1.0, leaving only DRM'ed ATSC 3.0 available to the public.

Between that and their willingness to bow to Trump's authoritarian demands, I think you're absolutely right about it all adding up to a death knell of not only the network-affiliate TV model, but more broadly, any trust in big, corporate-owned media at all by a large segment of the public aware enough to understand what it's becoming.

They are half filmed. Out of 20 episodes they probably have 8-10 in the can.

I was thinking why not just air the show on the stations that do want to air it like on the Scripts owned ABC stations and other station groups that carry ABC. The people in markets with stations that do not air the show can watch it on Hulu the next day or have a live feed of the show on Hulu.

I doubt it's that many. The new season is just starting. Unless it's a show that dumps all its episodes at once, Netflix-style, production is usually roughly four to six weeks behind air date.

The truth about Kimmel...he isn't very funny. When his show started, none of the celebrities would go on his show, they hated his guts (the Man Show probably the reason). He went "left" to get celebrities on his show.
Remember the saying..."keep a civil tongue".

That's your opinion, which is different from objective truth.

Yeah, more than a few shows went into production maybe a month to six weeks ago. Variables come into play with cast availability and commitments to other shows or films in some cases, location shoots and all the rest of the fun juggling of production schedules in a world that operates very differently than many years back. That said, ABC’s schedule is also heavy on reality and sports, so a wildcat strike would be impactful but not debilitating to the overall schedule right away.

Deadline with a "behind-the-scenes" of Kimmel's conversation with Disney's Dana Walden, who called to tell him of the suspension, which Disney prefers to call a pre-emption:

“Both sides were very businesslike and polite,” one source said.

Walden and Iger made the decision to “preempt” Jimmy Kimmel Live!“indefinitely” to tamp down controversy after FCC Chairman Brendan Carr called Kimmel’s comments about Charlie Kirk’s killer “some of the sickest conduct possible”.

Kimmel made it clear he was unwilling to apologize for his remarks, according to insiders, and was going to direct the focus on President Trump’s most fervent supporters, who have been in uproar since Monday night when Kimmel said the “MAGA gang desperately [is] trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and with everything they can to score political points from it”.

We hear he was planning to call out some of these supporters, while clarifying his comments.

It’s unclear exactly which comments were considered inflammatory but sources say the phrase “one of them” has been taken out of context.

Disney felt that if he had doubled down, the company would have been forced make a more drastic decision on Jimmy Kimmel Live’s future instead of the announced preemption, sources said.

The company hopes that it will be able to have Kimmel back on the air “soon”, per sources, but whether Kimmel himself is willing is also unclear.
