Doesnt the whole ground system have to be replaced, you have wires sticking out of the ground, dirt bikers have torn up that whole area, brush has overgrown, Wouldnt you also have to pay for some of the lot to be cleared to get to the ground system. Im not an engineer, what would it cost to replace the whole system if it needed to be, The sound quality is really poor right now and it doesnt really go out that far, even during the day.

I hope that the new regime keeps the shark rockin in the direction it's been heading. Since the new group PD arrived, the stations all seem to be more focused. The Shark is the station I listen to, (wife/oldies) and they seem to have the music tighter and more true to the classic rock format. If it's not broken PLEASE don't break it....errr Fix it.

If the copper is still there, it can be fixed. A new "ground system" is not all that complex ...
some ground rods around the tower, some copper strap, radials going out around the tower.
Not that expensive ... just the price of the wire and some labor. Yeah, cut the weeds down

Ain't gonna happen. It has to sell itself to make money or it will be a 9 watt black hole in six months as it starts to sign off at 6:30 or earlier in the winter, and signing on at 7:30 in January. Good thing it wasn't part of the deal. By the time a consulting engineer is done, a two or three tower array (into the water) is done, a new ground is patched or, preferably installed, ... you're talking major cash.
Just for a CP Modification, you can count on six months to a year, not counting building. Then, who will buy spots after 4:30 pm when it's dark or when it signs on at 7:30? A tough sell. Quarter million? No way. WOND is the AM to have. Hammondton just takes up spectrum ... even if it was brokered religion, who would buy it? Not for that community, certainly. The life of an existing, "getting along" AM has a limited life ... let alone a dog that's going nowhere, and won't do much. No need for "brokered" radio there. Just cluttering what's left of the pitiful AM band that so few are listening to. Look at the Atlantic City numbers lately?

All WGYM needs is a short ton or so of some of that nifty, ground propagation salt of yours, with those almost too large to miss, beryllium infused copper chunks. Couple that with the ground conductivity from the great heavy metal toxic waste effect left over from the 30’s all around Hammonton and you might get a nice little ground wave going. Maybe there a few pieces of the 1210 ground system left that 1580 can put to use. However, I really think there may be a limited level of motivation, to upgrade to necessary six or so towers for the maximum 50 watts at night. Then again, they can always make it easy to get the proof of performance to pass, change the license from a Class D, to part 15.

It looks like a little blood letting has begun at WMGM-Fm. A couple of days ago, WMGM-TV had a report on the sdale and the owner/spokesperson said that everything was staying in place, with a more local presence. And Now, Allaccess has a brief news story "update" stating that Paul Kelly is taking over as PD/On-Air.

Putting together a sentence that is correct is a good start in the communications business.
But seriously, in my experience, when a new group comes in and states; " no changes"...expect many.
And when they say, " with more of a local feel "... management is on-air and paying only a few bubbles above minimum wage.
I was looking forward to The Shark and 'JSE being a little fresher and more local with the last changes. I hope "local" doesn't mean "hokey",
you can BE local and still sound huge, like WZXL was before the Equity takeover.

When I was there, "Local" was VERY hokey. I don't think it will be like it was. Rich has focused the stations (rock) very well. I think Paul will further that in a great, major market sounding way.

Is 1580 even on the air? I was on the Expressway in Hammonton this afternoon and there was no sign of it. I used to be able to get the 9 watt night signal (at night) on the Expressway.

Howard Green used to use 1580 as a write-off. He used to broker out afternoons for spanish language programming, and the rest of the day as a simulcast of 1400. When we tried a local-based sports format in 2001, we were (if anything) too successful, because the station approached profitability and thus Howard would have lost his tax write-off.
If properly programmed, 1580 could make a great full-service station for Hammonton, and at least make back its expenses. It did so for years when it was WTYO. We could have done that in 2001 if allowed to, but the good of the cluster won out. Once unshackled from the others, it might be able to do so again.

Let's say, even with the nulls to protect Canada and WPGC (and, I assume, co-adjacents WPWA, WNST, WISP and WKHZ - would they have to protect Columbia, PA?), they could get a power upgrade, even minimal. How much would they need to go up to in order to place a servicable signal into AC proper post-sundown? Also, how far could they aim the signal down the coast?

Rob - It's not practical. It's a multi-million dollar, many year undertaking. It would take
about 6 towers, that means big bucks, big piece of property, zoning, EPA, etc.
Getting into Atlantic City at night would take about 10,000 watts on 1580.
Someone who wanted to hit Hammonton could put it back on the air rather cheaply,
maybe even for a couple thousand dollars with a used transmitter, or just repairing the
existing rodent infested 1000 watter, and giving it a shot.
That station hasn't been profitable as a stand alone since WRDR came on the air in 1972,
so it wouldn't be easy.
