I am thinking about going either all Channukah, or all Kwanza or even all Festivus , but not for a month or more, that is just silly...

I believe one of Georgia Eagle's stations - Warner Robins and to the south - is also all-Christmas now. Apparently I don't know anything about programming any more because I think all-Christmas music shortly after Halloween is too early and overkill. Working on holidays just went with the territory, but when we would usually go all-Christmas from about 6PM on Christmas Eve through 6PM on Christmas Day, at least it was something special for the announcers and the listeners. We would usually start slipping in maybe one Christmas song per daypart after Thanksgiving, then gradually increasing the holiday tunes within the format. There's just something wrong about a steady diet of
Dean Martin, Bing Crosby and the Harry Simeone Chorale on an A/C station for two months. Radio stations have burned out a lot of good Christmas music. How long before someone goes all Christmas, all the time - year round?

I'm with you Ben. Too much too soon. WBML used to be the first to play Christmas music in Macon. They would start after the Thnksgiving parade was held downtown. And then not solid Christmas music. We at MAZ would get into it very slowly. Maybe one every hour or two until a few days before Christmas, and then not all Christmas until Christmas Eve, as you mentioned.
I remember long ago WSB in Atlanta played Christmas music during the week after Christmas, after all, between then and New Years day is "Christmas Week". I guess it's a sign of the changing times.

WSB-FM/B98.5 has shown restraint over the past few years they have done all-Christmas, waiting until the day after Thanksgiving. They are still with normal programming today (after a brief deviation this weekend pretending to be "Jack"). Salem's Christian Contemporary "104.7 The Fish" and CC's "94.9 The Bull" (which did it last year as a holdover from the Peach/Lite days, albeit with all country artists) waited until the week of Thanksgiving as well.

CC has flipped WMJJ Birmingham already (as of November 1st). The CC AC's in Georgia have succumb to the sounds of Santa. A look at 100000watts.com shows most of the top AC's have flipped.

This is like reality TV...a fad that will not go away.

You can tell the listening preferences by seeing how car radios are made these days. Most come with an aux input for your mp3 player and/or USB input or satellite radio. Many have an iPod interface already included. Stations are competing not only against themselves but against other media. As those of us who revere the business get older, radio's market share will decrease. Youth doesn't have to depend on radio any more for music trends or entertainment.

So, play all the Christmas music you like all year long! Listeners have other options.

I agree, but think about it. Wal Mart had their Christmas inventory out the day after Halloween up here. We are not allowed to enjoy holidays anymore because of the retailers trying to get a bigger jump than the next guy. I remember as a kid enjoying Christmas because it only came once a year and the season didn't last longer than three weeks or so. Now, after being exposed to it for over two months, I'm glad when it's over.

103.9 has now gone all Christmas now we have 3 Christmas channels in Middle GA.I'm loving it plus I also have Holly on Sirius/Xm so I have my pick of 4 christmas stations now.The reason FM is doing this I believe is because of the economy to try to get people in the stores shopping.I love it thou. Two months isn't too much for me as the rest of the year I don't listen to it.By November 1st I'm ususally ready.Holly by the way is playing it till January 1st.

What's wrong with incorporating Christmas music into regular programming? I don't hear that anymore. I loved hearing Christmas music interspersed with the hottest hits back in the Eighties and Nineties. FM99 did it, WQBZ did it, and I'm trying to remember if 107.9 did it when they played Top 40 back in 1980-1. So what if they rob listeners from an all-Christmas (temporary) station in their clusters?

I have one XMAS song in my rotation every 3 hours. No traditional stuff, Tommy Tutone and Trans Siberian etc only. It works nicely and that way it is not overkill
