Though they may have gone around that by saying "cooler than cool", though many smokers may interpret cool as "Kool".

Spud was indeed a menthol cigarette and a long running one at that.
A lot of people assume menthol smokes came along with the filters in the 50s but actually both KOOL and Spud were around as far back as the early 1930's. Not sure which came first though. Interesting the KOOL logo used today was used back then as well.
BTW forgot one old cigarette TV slogan. Before they used "You have come a long way baby", Virginia Slims for a very brief time in 1968 ( perhaps 1967 ) used the slogan " Virginia Slims...The Beautiful Cigarette". Still marketed towards women though.
