Advertising Icons

*..Spud..cooler than Kool ( could be the first time a commercial actually mentions the name of a competitor )

Though they may have gone around that by saying "cooler than cool", though many smokers may interpret cool as "Kool".

On the other hand, what kind of cigarette is "Spud" (other than menthol)?

Spud was indeed a menthol cigarette and a long running one at that.

A lot of people assume menthol smokes came along with the filters in the 50s but actually both KOOL and Spud were around as far back as the early 1930's. Not sure which came first though. Interesting the KOOL logo used today was used back then as well.

BTW forgot one old cigarette TV slogan. Before they used "You have come a long way baby", Virginia Slims for a very brief time in 1968 ( perhaps 1967 ) used the slogan " Virginia Slims...The Beautiful Cigarette". Still marketed towards women though.

-the two old guys for Bartles and James wine coolers (Bartles did all the talking...Thank you for your support)
-Ernie and the Keebler elves
-Tony the Tiger (Frosted Flakes)
-the Jolly Green Giant (and Sprout)
-Mr Whipple (actor Dick Wilson who just died a few months ago)
-the little dog from the Taco Bell ads
-Jared from the Subway ads (newer, yes I know, but who doesn't know who he is)
-Fred the baker from the Dunkin Donuts ads (actor Michael Vale, who died in 2005, played Fred for 15 years)
-McDonald's Golden Arches
-Wendy's founder Dave Thomas (who replaced Clara Peller in the mid 80s after Clara appeared in a Prego's spaghetti commercial---according to Wikipedia)
-Nike's swoosh
-Wendy the Snapple lady/secretary (1993-1994...fired when Quaker Oats bought the company...reinstated in 1997 when Triarc bought Snapple from QO)

"Honeycomb's big, yeah, yeah, yeah!
It's not small, no, no, no!
Honeycomb's got a big, big bite!
Big, big taste, and a big, big bite!"

This is why Saturday morning commercials are so controversial! So many of them are for sweet, sugary cereals! And those jingles are so easy to remember! Even after all these years!

-Mrs. Olsen from Folger's coffee
-Cora for Maxwell House
-the Snuggle bear
-Madge for Palmolive
-the Gorton fisherman
-Mr. Clean (bald, muscular guy)
-the Michelin tire guy
-Florence Henderson for Wesson Oil
-James Garner and Mariette Hartley for Polaroid film (No they were not husband/wife :D )
-Ben and Jerry

and two that come to mind but not 100% sure of the products:

-the heard but not seen (seen below the neck anyway) frisky couple who are always buttering their food....Country Crock margarine???

and

-"It's not nice to fool Mother Nature"---Imperial Margarine?? or another margarine/butter??

I don't know about the first, but "Mother Nature" was Chiffon Margarine. You really can google anything. I just typed "it's not nice to fool mother nature" into the search line and got this YoutTube link to the famous commercial:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLrTPrp-fW8

For those of you who appreciate voice-over guys, the man in the Chiffon commercial is the great Mason Adams, who made a living primarily from TV voice-overs during the 50s thru the 80s, but also played editor Charlie Hume in Lou Grant.

And here's the imbd link for Dena Dietrich who played Mother Nature - still around and still acting, apparently. I don't think you can say she quite attained advertising icon status like Mrs. Olsen or Josephine the Plumber, but she certainly came close

Thanks, I should have known to try YouTube.

So I tried it for Country Crock and, sure enough, those were the ads with the hand models for the flirty couple heard but not seen above the neck.

Mason Adams voiced Smuckers Jelly commercials for years. I believe John Goodman voices those ads now.

Mason Adams also narrated the multi-part A&E series "American Eats..History On A Bun"

Actually, I think it's Willard Scott on the Smuckers commercials now, and John Goodman on Dunkin' Donuts ads. Mason Adams passed away a couple years ago.

The guy's voice in the Country Crock commercials is Jack Riley (Mr. Carlin on "The Bob Newhart Show" and the voice of the dad on "Rugrats").

ETA: I never heard of Spud cigarettes. Now Spud Beer is another story..."Ohhhhh Spud!"

I couldn't find the commercial, but I remember that Riley did the commercial with a woman, though you don't see either of them on camera. Does anybody know who the female voice is?

The two of them were a very successful duo, and did many amusing commercials on both TV and radio in the 80s and 90s.

If I remember correctly, Riley later did the voice of Mr. Pickles on the Rug Rats...my son's favorite show when he was little.
