AirAura

Having fun test driving an AirAura this week... it's on the bench and then next Wed. it goes on the air. Tomorrow morning I'll be bugging Mike with some questions.

Some observations. VERY clean on voice, and very natural. Since the station this is going on will be 75% spoken word, that's a big concern. Music of course, sounds good too. What I like so far is that you can start very "neutral" and then tailor to what flavor you want the audio to have. I've been able to go from wall of sound to open and punchy and in between. I've also been able to match the tonal balance with PGM and what's coming out of the processor. That alone is a pretty mean feat. The SST AGC/Compressor is probably the easiest to set up and smoothest I've used so far.

Only a couple of cons in my couple of days experience so far... I would like a way to have a de-emphasized output on the analog outs and MPX on the BNC. Unless I've missed something, if I switch to MPX out on the BNC the analog outs go pre-emphasized and the levels are HOT. Some kind of metering for the stereo expander would be very helpful too. And a way to quickly duplicate the settings on the HD and FM limiter sections.

And what continues to amaze me through this whole process is how close Breakaway can come very close to all of these $10k plus processors!!

We have one on the air in this market as of December. Hands down it's the best voice processor ever. Very dense, but clear. If I were doing talk, there is no second choice. Nothing else is close. The music format is active rock, so I cannot say how good it is on music since Active rock is already a brick wall, but it AirAuria is definately LOUD.

It's going head to head next week with an Omnia.9, should be interesting. Two completely different approaches.

I know it would probably consume vast amounts of DSP for all 31 bands, but some kind of way of setting the knee differently for different band groups would be good to have. Like a soft knee dbx style "over easy" on the lows and a hard knee on the top end.

It's a tweaker's box for sure though. The start panel with the sliders is nice, but I like being able to dig in. The metering is also excellent. I put an Omnia.11 on the air last year and am still disappointed in the metering even with the firmware update. There are supposed to be analysis screens and such, even a Dorrough loudness meter and that's not even on it yet. But it's in the picture in Radio World. I know they wanted to get it out, and the sound is great, but there are still a lot of tabs that don't do anything when you click them. I'm hoping that the 9 is fully ready to roll when it shows up.

Let us know how that goes. I'm more interested in the Omnia 9 results. No one I know has been able to get a demo of the O9. Something about a recall for broken screens. Wheatstone should stick with building consoles......oh well, I guess Telos-Omnia is in the console business as well :D

Recall? No, there's been no recall. I saw 25 units head out the door yesterday. More will go today!!

Sorry, I stand corrected, no recall; However, I was just directed to this thread about screens:

Omnia.9 - initial production batches have shipped some weeks ago and are on-air at various stations on several continents. Then a production issue came up whereby it was possible to get a cracked screen. No good, to say the least. Some redesign has occurred and testing to assure quality.

You'd think that manufacturing would work like this: Make a good one and copy it as needed for sales volume. I wish it was that easy. Component lead times can make you pull your hair out! And a manufacturing process that worked last week may prove unworkable today.

Best way to get an Omnia.9 is to have it on firm order with your dealer - and make sure your dealer is talking with us. As audio processor satisfaction is at least partly subjective, Omnia always offers a way to return a processor within a reasonable period for a full refund. You won't be stuck with a new Omnia processor you don't like.

BTW, we've been able to work through almost all of the Omnia.11 backorders. We sold out our 6-month production quantity in a 2-month period, so it's been a scramble to keep up.

Thanks for your confidence and patience. From the engineer comments I hear - from friends in the Southern US and in Europe - the Omnia.9 is worth being patient for.

Thanks sincerely for your support. My hard-working Telos-Omnia-Axia colleagues, and their families, appreciate it!

As Kirk noted, those were *initial* production batches, where we noticed it might have been *possible* to get a cracked screen. We took a conservative approach, and held up initial shipments in order to make sure everything was solid. We are long past that now. Bottom line: Units are shipping on a daily basis.

That is good to know Frank; Most companies would have shipped and dealt with the possible problems later. :)
