Akron/Canton ratings

I think WQKT could see a huge advantage by going to "Canton's Own Country." They wouldn't lose Wooster business except a few Cleveland Indians advertisers, but they could move that to the AM band and grab a FM Translator with the new cash coming in from a well oiled "Canton Country" format.

Except that Dix will NEVER do that, and anyone who knows them, knows that.

Back around the 2001 frequency swap, Clear Channel offered to buy 104.5 and swap it with 107.7/Loudonville. The result would have been WKDD on 104.5 (instead of where it landed, 98.1/Canton), and WQKT on 107.7, a frequency that had once targeted Wooster as smooth jazz "The Breeze" in the early 1990s.

The problem? 107.7 does reach Wooster, but can't serve all of Wayne County. All of a sudden, their HSFB/HSBB games can't reach places in eastern and northeastern Wayne County.

Dix obviously nixed the deal, and CC ended up picking up WHK-FM/98.1 in Canton, and you know the rest.

One quick note on the My 101.7 music list. It's not from the Terry Simmons playbook. Knowing he knew the market well I had lunch with him shortly after his departure and before we lit up 101.7. He gave me sound advice on what listeners in the market would expect and demand. His advice proved to be right, except when it came to the music. ;D I told him what we were doing with the format and his exact words were, "It'll never work". I heard that a thousand times BTW, not just from him. We've since talked and had a good laugh. Terry is doing great work now in FLA at i100. Wouldn't surprise me if under the pending expansion of his company he finds himself with more responsibilities in additional markets. Despite what some here say, he's a solid programmer who got a royal screwing locally.
