Al Roney

I’ve been watching and waiting for a specific post on this site dealing directly with the firing of Al Roney from the 50K watt blow torch…and there’s been NOTHING. What gives? I see the usual stupid, irrelevant, nonsensical comments about the ongoing meaningless garbage that is everything radio has come to be, but nothing about the most significant blunder, the biggest loss to the market in particular and radio in general and a frightening last gasp as radio loses its purpose to protect and inform citizens.
Are we all so callous, dumbed down or so self motivated that we can’t see how meaningful the loss?
Who is going to champion the cause of the people? Who is left to question issues like mandatory shots, curbs on the second amendment, or deciding what is best for your children? When Americans are being fleeced of their retirement, their jobs and their homes, who give a rat’s behind about horoscopes, the stock market or celebrity breakups? Al wasn’t perfect but he was as good as it gets in this and many a market, in this climate of Corporate Media. I don’t know if I am more disgusted by WGY’s decision or the lack of furry from his brethren on this discussion board. Wake up! He carried the sword of the public into battle every day, a chore that no one else dared to undertake. Roney got grief from spineless bosses and well placed officials with vested interests. And what did he get for his efforts? NOTHING!!! Not even an “atta boy” from us on this blog. The Public see all of us for what we are, nothing more than phonies, DEAD AIR and that’s why they listened to him and not us. That’s why Radio, TV and News Print are all but dead because we don’t address any thing that really matters to our audience. Are we all so small that we can’t calculate what the loss of Roney means to every one of us? Not only listeners but on air folks as well. Let’s hang on to our meaningless gigs as long as we can as we amount to nothing in the ears and eyes of our audience. Al’s significance and his removal from the airwaves wasn’t lost on his audience and this post to the TU’s website is just one of 75 comments imploring his return. It will be interesting to see how truly tone deaf we radio people are. “There but for the grace of God go I”. Who’s next?

Well now it’s time to see if Paul Vandenburgh is as smart a business man as he claims. It’s a no-brainer to add Al Roney to his line up and get rid of the tired, oh so shrill and sanctimonious Dr. Laura. All this syndicated tripe is what has led to the down fall of radio. Listeners would be able to tune in from morning until evening and get something that is sorely lacking on 99.9% of radio stations – A diverse, cross section of issues and opinions from not only the hosts but also the callers on LOCAL as well as national issues. It just makes sense on all fronts; for the community, for the real spirit of what radio is meant to be and let’s not forget the all important bottom line, advertising wise. What do you say Paul it’s a Win-Win. Let WGY’s costly mistake become your and everyone else’s gain and show everyone you really are a smart programmer; As you can see by the comments people want an avenue where their concerns can be heard. HIRE AL RONEY!

Al appears to be playing it cool headed. Just basically saying that he is disappointed. I wonder if there is a possibility that he might replace Don Weeks when he retires? He may want to stay on the good side with CC. If he did go back, I could see him doing the show much like it is done now from 5:30 to perhaps 8:15 after the sports report and the bulk of the morning drive is over. For the last 45 min. of the show, he might come up with a topic and take a few phone calls. Paul Vandenburgh would probably have a hard time coming up with what it would cost to put Al on the payroll. The best he might be able to do is part-time or fill-in.

While not specifically referenced in the above posts, the title of the link to this thread on the rotating current topics header is:

"Can Facebook bring ex-WGY Host Al Roney back?"

Well, if it can get Betty White a hosting gig on "SNL," anything is possible! (Incidentally, in the wake of this successful campaign, there is now a drive for WGY host Rush Limbaugh to host "SNL". :D )

Regarding Knick's premonition that CC could hire Roney back for morning drive, I'm sure that's not out of the question. I'm sure if CC had to choose between Weeks and Roney, they'd figure to get even more grief letting Weeks go, but it wouldn't be the first time CC gave a longtime air personality the ax...

Reporter: Will be awaiting your update. Dto the J, I don't think Don would get the Ax, I just think that he will retire in the not to distant future, given his age; 71.

Once I receive word and get permission...Then you will know.

A talk show host (Al) gets fired because someone better (Glenn), cheaper and much more popular came along?

This is controversial how?
As for Don Weeks' forced retirement specifically to bring Al back...keep dreaming. I don't think Al's "schtick" would work in morning drive. Chuck Custer knows better than you.
If Al is as fabulous as you say, someone will snap him up in a heartbeat.
Welcome to the wild and wacky world of radio, kiddies!

Of course he's being cool headed. He probably wants that severance and he understands that blowing up bridges isn't necessarily the best long term strategy. Don't get me wrong....I thoroughly enjoyed the rants of the former WROW morning show host on here...it was priceless in fact...but maybe not the best long term career strategy...

You might not have agreed with Roney but he wasn't a shill. Glen "rub vicks in my eyes so it looks like I'm crying on TV" Beck is as phony as a $4 bill. He's more of what's been pushed as Entertainment for the great unwashed for all these years, only the listeners weren't so entertained and left radio in droves. Custer knows what he's doing all right he's following orders from the big boys in Texas so he can get a paycheck and when there's no one left to fire... And by the way what media company is in the position to SNAP anybody up? Sounds like there's a little mic envy at work here. Roney was unique and his firing is a huge loss to those who are looking for more than a beat to bang their head against the dashboard to.

Has anyone noticed those brief spots by Don Weeks encouraging those who buy advertising to contact WGY? Looks like they are really hurting. Wonder if the firing of Al Roney and bringing in Glenn Beck has caused some backlash by advertisers who have heard the listener's mostly negitive comments?

Radio's hurting. Same for TV and newspaper. And let's not be deluded into thinking that the Internet is taking off and making up for radio's losses. It's not. By design, CC has a stable of national names which they can plug in from Boston to Bismarck. CC controls the pipeline and the content (in Beck's case it could be the sewer.) Calling Beck as authentic "as a $4 bill" is a compliment. Monopoly money has more value. (A mildly amusing metaphor, given CC is such a monoploy.) Beck is a total fraud, but as part of the CC platform (as the company owns dozens of news-talk stations) he's a perfect fit. And he's laughing all the way to the bank. In so many ways, these guys are like the Vaudeville geek who gets everybody's attention by walking on stage and biting off the head of a chicken. Repulsive, but everybody knows them. It's especially sad because guys like Beck are replacing local talk show hosts who in many cases deal with local events and issues.

I will write this....

Things are developing.....

Stay tuned.
Did whatever was developing fall Through?

This is a good question. I try not to pry because it's not my business. I did some connections, and they connected. Unless Al Roney isn't interested. I dunno..If and when I hear, you'll hear. I'm not going to report anything false.

In ratings released last Wednesday, Joe Scarborough's radio show beat the much-publicized Glenn Beck on WOR (710 AM), 10 a.m.-noon, as it has been doing for months.

Ratings for New York City, that is.

Would be interesting to see Roney resurface on another station (WGDJ?) in the same time slot and beat Beck on WGY.

No fan of Beck am I [/understatement], but using NYC (market #1) as a barometer for Albany could be comparing apples to oranges. In NYC, Beck's on a directional 50kw AM signal vs. Scarborough who's on 50kw non-DA WABC. But more important, Joe has a more powerful lead-in with Imus than does Beck. Still, Beck... feh!
