Albany Radio, Where Are They Now?

Chuck Bare was mentioned earlier in this thread. He was in Apalachicola working at a standards station last I heard. I remember him from the old WJAD days.

Well, as for Beau Stone aka Lewis dudley, I hired him in Hoisington, Ks in 84, and shortly after that fired him. No news since then

He came to work with us in 1975. Disappeared and never got his first check. It stayed around the office for nearly a year and never heard from him.

Does anyone know what ever happened to Dave McGriff who had WQDE during the 80's. He also had a very short run with Ilene Berns at WALG/WKAK in the late 80's.

As I remember WQDE was a 3 station ownership of Southland Radio Inc. with another in Brunswick, and a sister station WQDI in Homestead, Florida, they billed themselves as Q-Dee radio, Big Jim Wiggins and his band of character's, 3 good ole southern boy's who had their hand's in running these stations as owner operator's and I guess the local banks as well, so whatever happened to Jim Wiggins, Larry Dean and was it Bill Stewart?

Interesting point, Larry Dean was missing an arm, and could run an on-air board and just as tight as any two armed guy could, these stations were back in the 70's and early 80's and long story short, WQDI in Homestead was a 500watt day timer and these 3-guy's with their on-air antics, country music and their good ole country bumpkin style turned this little 500 watt day timer into a multi-mega-buck operation. The knew what it took to run a successful local small time station......Very talented people....

I seem to recall a number of years ago hearing that Jim Wiggins had died. I worked very briefly for a guy here in Brunswick who had purchased his station from Larry Dean (last name Hickerson). Larry passed away shortly after selling the station. I did not know Larry well. He took over management of WQDE in Albany in late 74 when left Phil Powell left and I left Albany's entertainer a short time after that.

the only way to save radio from the inevitable irrelevancy that it's doomed for is to make radio fun and interesting and worth listening to again. I'm not talking about this stupid, childish humor that seems to be prevalent in most radio programming today. Talk TO the listeners, not at them.

Hi Guys it's Tammy .... I have been doing Mornings in Tallahasse Florida for the past 17 years now. I started off with John Dawson in Bainbridge on 97.3 WJAD in August of 1989. We did mornings together there until late 1993 when the new owners moved the station to Albany and I came her to do the "Jim & Tammy Morning show on the new station "98.9 The Breeze" My morning partner Jim Avery left the station in 1998 and John came back so we were "reunited" and have been together ever since. John Dickey changed the format and the name of the station to Star 98.9 in 1999. John Dawson has been doing an amazing job programming the station since 2003. If your on Facebook please find me.

Hi Guys,

I remember a bunch of the names that have come up. I was Bill Bailey on WALG in 1976 then came back to WQDE in 1978.

I thought the owner at that time was a guy from Louisiana, I remember his teenage son being a wise-butt...

I've been working the last five years in the Dothan market as Wild Bill...

I always wondered what happened to the "Night Hawk" Craig ? And Beau somebody that went out to Wyoming...

Boy are the cobwebs showing.

Take care,
Bill Camarata "[email protected]"

Robert Ingram is a good friend of mine...he's still around the area. He did mornings at WMGR-AM right before the Clear-Channel takeover, then did mornings at WPAX for a while. His main employment for the past few years was with WCTV as a Master Control Op, but moved over to WTWC this past year. He's doing well, and I think might stop by here occasionally. I'll make sure and tell him to say hello.

Hi Chris! Hi Skip!

Bill Bailey... The owner you were thinking of was Dave McGriff, he and the queen owned, and that boy was an idiot. Even his mama fired him.

Whatever happened to Howard Johnson who was co-owner of Radio Albany which was sold to Clear Channel. i was also wondering about Claire Peeples (Peoples) who was the manger of the Clear Channel group in Albany after the bought Radio Albany. Clair was way out of here league when she was brought over from the Cumulus Cluster. Lou Leary who worked for WJIZ I understand passed away.
