ALL ACCESS REPORTING: JOHN MAINELLI TO BECOME WFNY FREE FM PD

Tony9000 said:
So here is the problem this has gotten off message, so I will take it back to the New PD at WFNY. I heard him on the radio today and he sounds like he has a plan for WFNY. Now only time will tell.

who was he on with?

He was on with JV and Elvis for about 5-10 minutes. Seemed really nice and was looking forward to making WFNY a great station.

John Mainelli now PD of Free FM

Confirmed by R&R on Friday and NERW today.

As Mainelli is a big-time promoter of right-wing radio, expect Free FM to move hard right. Don't be surprised if Free FM picks up Rush Limbaugh should WABC drop him over his sicko comments on Michael J. Fox.

I do not see him moving the WFNY to right-wing radio. I see him moving it to hot talk, with talk. He does not seem to be the kind of person that we take Free-fm off the course. It was designed as a "hot talk" station, that is all the free fm stations designed for this. So let's see what he does, but remember his only PD, others have the final say. I do not see Limbaugh as a WFNY FM person, his show is AM on most all NY stations and almost all stations that he is on. I would say almost 95%+ stations are AM across the country.

Mainelli isn't a promoter of "right-wing" radio. He's a promoter of talk radio that brings in listeners.

With one station (WABC) already covering that area, it's not likely he'll swing WFNY in the same direction.

He is not moving WFNY to the type of radio WABC does. He will be moving it to Hot Talk with talk. Something different all together. If he moves this station to that format, that will go against the Free-fm across the country and he will be looking for 50+ as listeners. I am not sure that is what WFNY or the Free-FM is looking for.

That'll never happen.

I am new to this board... TowerBuzz what are you radio credentials?
[/quote]

That is an interesting question to ask of someone on an anonymous board. My credentials are solid then again you dont need solid credentials to know that a dentist and failed radio wannabe, who only got as far as part time in Westchester over 20 years ago, but swears he has NYC radio all figured out and could do it better than anyone currently DOING radio in NYC, is a bit of a joke. Sure some knowledgeable types post on his baord but the way he runs it is entirely suspect, he dseminates the info he wants out there and has liberally edited the board at his whims. In short anyone actually in radio knows he's a kook, no one would come here and post about how influential and big time he is.

I DON'T think he will at all - but it WILL be interesting to see WHAT he does. It's sure to be different from the other "Free-FM's" out there.

I am in radio like almost everyone here and anyone who thinks Minelli wuld move Free to right wing talk just becuse he programmed wabc 12 odd years ago is not accurate.

Thanks for the Mainelli cip, Jestin...

I think Mainelli will be MOViN the station in about 6 months.

Gimme a break for starters he's a talk programmer, but with both WNEW and KTU doing what they're doing you think there would even be room for a Movin station in NY? are you high?.

"Hot Talk" = Right-Wing Radio. Its only purpose is to stir up the far right.

Incidentally, the Newark Star-Ledger reported this story today (after everyone else) and censored the fact that Mainelli was fired from the New York Post. That's because the writer involved (Claudia Perry) is a big fan of right-wing radio.

Limbaugh is heard on FM in Minneapolis and Pittsburgh. Both of those FM stations have a right-wing format.

That is wrong, "hot talk" is young male oriented talk, Leykis (like him or not), Ron and Fez, Radio Chick, O and A, Stern (although he's not usually credited as such, he's seen as an Island unto himself). Right wing talk is Limbaugh, O'reilly, G. Gordon Liddy, everyone on wabc/wor Bob grant, "Hot talk" before Janet Jackson was mostly T n A talk, although guys like Mancow is a right wing guy himself and all of a sudden decided that he could do politics as well as T and A because Howard does both. O and A tend to have right wing bents as well but that is just a symptom of their being a couple of blue collar yucks from Long Island and not trying to promote an agenda so much. Two different animals, at least on paper. Just because some right wing shows are put on fm sticks that does not make those stations "hot talk" i think you're confused and lumping any fm talk outlet in as a "hot talk" station, not true.
