...is making me thirsty!

Before I hit my flask, my question is... will anyone go "Jack" in Portland? I predict WMGX... they're halfway there anyway musically.

bottoms up!!

Anyone considered Citadel flipping something? They've got Bob stations in Tucson, Oklahoma City, and probably a few others. 98.9 BOB FM?

NOOOOOOO! Don't touch my 'CLZ. How about WYNZ. Makes sense now that Infinity switched from oldies in Chicago and NYC. Besides, all those oldies listeners, my wife included, have switched to Frank.

really? is that why YNZ was Top 5 12+ and Top 3 across the board in demos?

i'm sure that the Western Ave crew is thrilled to know that with fewer listeners you reap better numbers.

talk about fuzzy math.

actually, the whole "Jack/Bob/Frank/Mike" thing is very interesting in that for years, most staffers at stations with various formats have attempted to implore their pd to "bend a bit" in regards to playlist. sneak in a little something different now and again. "NO!" the pd would scream.

now it seems that maybe there is a little more to the whole fringe categories that most formats had shied away from.

You're right about WYNZ's solid numbers, but just listening for a couple of hours and you hear the same problem that has begun to force the changes at oldies stations around the country. The station just doesn't sound healthy. A stop set with two commercials and weather isn't paying any bills. Right or wrong, the advertising community and agencies just stopped embracing oldies stations. Today, you just can't afford to have a radio station with those ratings not able to sell solid advertising at decent rates.

Why does MGX get a bad wrap?

well, there are plenty of stopsets that run on (and on and on and on - 6 minutes+) on WYNZ. almost sounds like they need a little spotload balancing to even things out. but, if you hear maybe 2 spots and a weather at the 20 break, the 50 break is usually a full-load. that means they're backloading the log, which gives the product (music) more of a chance to shine for the first three quarter-hours.
but then again, when you catch 6 minute breaks on other stations, who knows what the prevailing rate is. that's been the deathknell for sales in Portland of late. when you get top-of-the-heap stations selling at a (net) dollar a holler, it's ridiculous. sure, the rate starts at 40 or 50, but when you factor in the "2-for-1" in one daypart, "3-for-1" in another, etc. you wind up with an ROS (Run Of Schedule) that can literally work itself down to a buck a spot.
from the sales side of things, there are too few of the generation who know how to sell radio, as opposed to the "nextGen" account reps who learn to sell "ratings."
that said, however, any sale is a good sale. just gotta get those hooks into the ad budget a little deeper, then hang on.

> Why does MGX get a bad wrap?
Probably because they always get the lobster salad. It looks delicious, but in fact, it's a terrible wrap.

Man, I crack myself up.

Isn't Frank pretty much a Jack station for very white Maine?
Frank plays a lot of the same music as most Jack stations,
stretching from The Stones and Van Halen to Cat Stevens
and James Taylor.

Yes, some of the early MTV new wave/dance hits might be
missing. But that may reflect the small minority presence
in the market. Frank follows much of the Jack playbook
including very little talk.

I don't think so. 107.5 Frank is pretty straightforward classic hits. New Hampshire's Frank seems to be pretty much the same musically.

The "Jack" format will toss in rhythmic titles from the likes of Earth Wind & Fire or Stevie Wonder - often shockingly close to rock songs from the likes of Quiet Riot or Def Leppard. The stated idea is total variety. Yes, "Jack" leans rockward, but anything that was a hit could be played. Frank basically eschews anything too rhythmic and sticks with the rock n roll side of pop.

If you live within range of the Boston/NH area, give a listen to 106.3 Frank - then 93.7 Mike - and you'll clearly hear the difference.

Portland could get "Jacked" and WMGX is a potential candidate. But, is there really a call for the format in the market? Already there are a lot of diverse signals available in the area, covering anything that a "Jack" would play.

Then again, who would have expected Infinity to blow up CBS-FM in NY - so anything is possible.....
