It was one of their standard promos that went along the lines of "WTRG! Oldies 100.7. All the biggest hits from the 60's." there was some music sampling (mostly in the background,) and then it ended with "WTRG Rocky Mount." "Oldies 100.7." As If they were returning from a break and ready to fire up more music.

After the promo 100.7 went back to their usual break, and returned with the River.

This was somewhere before noon yesterday, and I figured a format switch was ready for the 12:00 hour.

I wasn't sure if I had heard it wrong, or what. so I emailed the FCC. My question and the FCC response below...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for contacting the FCC. I appreciate the opportunity to respond.

Previously, the FCC examined changes in radio formats as part of its obligation to determine whether the station would continue to serve the public interest. This policy, however, ceased in 1976. Because of the age of this document, I cannot refer you to a document that is available on the Internet.

I hope that this information is helpful.

I'm curious, did the FCC, at one time, have to approve radio format changes in the best interest of the public? If this was a regulation, way back in the day, is there documentation stating so? A link perhaps to an old document, etc?

Technically, yes, B&T's show is "talk". MOST AM drive local and syndicated shows are mostly talk; Showgram, Joyner, JB&B, Stern, Mancow, the list goes on and on. Rule of thumb this programming does better than "more music" morning shows. MOST people want to entertained and informed.

Now, I know what you're going to say, Allan's show fits that criteria. And you're right. To play Devil's Advocate, some may (may not) want "talk" programming on a music station outside of AM drive. Depends on the vision the PD (and/or OM) have for the station. Here's the thing, the only thing that really matters for ratings (and to Sales) is M-F 6a-7p. Weekends is where programming should be "opened up". Take a chance. Especially Sunday night 10p-12mid. Niched weekend programming is great, especially if it does well. Now defunct WTRG's "At the Hop" (50s/60s) was top 5 P25-54 summer '04. It beat the Beach Show in ratings. But the sales staff was inept. Mostly 25 year olds who know nothing of the format, don't care to find out, etc. They all want to sell G105. Anyway, the show, which beat Allan's, couldn't be sold, regardless of the numbers.

As it's been said above in other posts, Allan's show, most likely was cancelled due to the XM interview. Hypocrisy? YES, since CC (and other media outlets) carry XM and Sirius spots. I'll be fair in saying that most of those spots are via barter services, so they have to be aired. But some are not, they're paid spots.

Hay Bigwoody..Thanks for some Honesty ...But to me WRDU has lost it's chance to help influence a generation of kids ..As a 46yrs old I remember what we had, Some good...some very bad AND yes some of Handelman's guest's were over the top....( The Prez is part lizard???lol) But there is and has been some great info And the kids ,..And some of the rest of us got a chance to voice or asl a question....I Guess I'm old school.....I belive that broadcasters have a responsibility to the public..Instead of only the top 10 songs
