Alt 92.3 to Become WINS Simulcast

Initially, Imagine Dragons fit the Alternative format at the time. It's Time was an Alternative hit. Radioactive also fit quite well. Once they got to Thunder in 2017, pop was in a freefall and that song was a massive pop hit. There's nothing Alternative about most of their current hits, such as Enemy.

Alternative by design is not exclusively "Rock" Moby, Daft Punk, Beastie Boys, Eminem, Erasure, Basement Jaxx, are among artists that have had airplay on Alternative stations at one point.

Right now they are all lumped in together and it does not work all that well which is why WNYL failed.

That's the problem. There are limits on the number of broadcast radio stations in each town, and limits on how many of those stations each company can own. So you have to lump it all together, or pick the one most commercial approach. No such limits exist in the digital world, which is why all of this makes more sense as online or HD channels. But because there's no revenue from either of those places, you can't expect to get any staffing for those channels. Just as there is no staffing for Spotify or Pandora.

My questions are...Why is the Alt brand struggling?? Is it the brand itself, the programming, or the music??

The music needs a core. It needs something to build a format around other than 30 year old hits. This is something artists & labels need to build. preferably by working with radio so everyone is rowing the boat in the same direction. This is something that is done regularly in other formats and genres. Music doesn't just "happen." It has to be organized, and unfortunately that is counter to the culture of this genre of music. It's always been a battle, but it was less of a battle when the music was crossing over into pop. That helped get credibility beyond a handful of fans. That's why those songs are so strong even after 30 years.

Well I just saw the news about this, and I can't say I'm at all surprised. The ratings have never been spectacular, they've never been able to capture the magic of the old K-Rock days (most of which was sustained by Stern's show anyway), and my guess is that they figure the billings will still be good enough simulcasting the news station.

I'm far more interested in what happens with 880 now that they've also made the anchors and reporters "interchangeable". That really sounds like they're going to eventually downsize from two news stations to one. I wonder if there are some future plans for 880 to be more of an extension of WFAN to better broadcast multiple games when they're on at the same time (like when the Yankees and Giants play and they put one team on the FM and one on the AM) or maybe fit in some of the talk shows when games are on. Just something that feels like would eventually make sense.

The Mets are currently on 880

Staffed and live, voice tracked, or zombie jukebox?
My guess: voicetracked in a similar fashion to 94.7 HD2. Brady has confirmed he still is employed by Audacy, so he will likely continue to be heard unless he does something else. Kevan Kenney is now out of KROQ, so he will continue to be heard.

I agree that its likely that 880 will eventually be the one to go away. WCBS has more reporters than WINS, so by combining the staff, there are definitely more resources that way. Unless there are cuts, sharing anchors probably will most likely manifest as fill-ins on the other station.

Keep in mind these are two different brands, and any professional can adapt their writing or delivery to fit those two unique brands.

So if WCBS wishes to keep making $30 million a year, they will continue to present the news in their unique style.

I hope they get rid of Elliot in the Morning, it's God awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would think once WINS gets on FM for a while, there are going to be enough WCBS listeners that will shun it to be able to listen to the news on FM where they’re likely already listening to everything else..which will start to hit numbers and have a knock on effect. But just my opinion.
