Alt 92.3

No.

With the creeping death of AM, and people's declining interest in music on FM, it's only a matter of time before at least one of Audacy's all-news stations in New York gets moved to FM displacing Alt 92.3 for a simulcast of 1010 WINS. I don't think it's imminent quite yet...but ultimately it will happen.
I've always felt that ALT or WNSH would be killed off. Maybe more so ALT since country in the top Market is important even if it suffers in the ratings

The thing about both of those formats is they're marketable in other ways that exceed the on-air signal. WNSH just did a 9/11 20th anniversary concert that was well-attended and sponsored. I expect they'll do an Alt show for Christmas.

WNSH is probably a keeper for Audacy. Even if it's not the biggest format in NYC, Country is a radio staple. That audience loves old tech. They still listen to FM...they still buy CDs...hell, the auto makers still put whip antennas on their pickup trucks because they know that's what those buyers care about.

They could move WNSH to 92.3 to take advantage of the full power signal on the ESB. WNSH has been hampered from reaching Long Island, with its NJ transmitter.

Why not switch WNSH and Alt’s dial positions? Keep the Alt format in the area. Hopefully they would regain some Long Island coverage once 94.7 moves to its closer in NJ location (if it ever happens).

WNSH has been 4.8 6+ in Middlesex-Somerset-Union the last two books. Why would Audacy want to reduce its signal in a market that obviously has taken a liking to contemporary country to try to reach Long Island better?

Would moving the signal to ESB really reduce the signal to those counties in NJ?

That would hurt WNYL's coverage in Long Island. They're both suburban formats.

They own more alternative stations than country so they're more focused on alternative.

... because there is little money in the Middlesex-Somerset-Union. There are only about $7 million radio dollars in that market, while in the NYC market there are over $400,000,000. Also, Middlesex County is also part of the NYC metro and even with a signal move of a few miles that would be covered (Middlesex has half of the M-S-U population).

In other words, follow the money. WNSH already bills nearly as much as that whole suburban market does, so why would they want to be a big fish in a very small pond as opposed to being a decent player in the nation's second highest billing radio market?

Added later: the local stations in M-S-E only account for 6.3 share points in that market. All the rest is listening to NYC market stations. Beasley buys the book there, because they have 80% of the local revenue.

The only county that matters is Middlesex, and it is part of the NYC Nielsen metro also. Either way, it is covered.

Interesting that Audacy has abruptly flipped KILT, an alt. rock station in San Francisco for 35 years. The station changed to Variety Hits, apparently resembling the Jack format. While it recently did have even lower overall ratings than WNYL, it is still interesting that Audacy is open to dropping a heritage alt format in a major market.
Audacy Has 1 Less Major Market Alt. Station

KILT (AM) is Houston Sports station and KILT-FM is country.

They also ruined a heritage brand remember? 92.3 doesn't have KRock as it's heritage brand.
It’s actually KITS, but that’s besides the point. “Heritage” brands don’t mean all that much if they have few listeners and bill poorly. They only mean something to radio geeks or people who think that radio is some sort of museum.

K-Rock as a "heritage brand" was ruined the moment Howard Stern walked out the door.

Country is the perfect format for the 94.7 signal.

Some day, 92.3 MHz will probably be repurposed to become the new home of WINS. Given the undeserved demise of 98.7 Kiss FM, the popularity of 107.5 WBLS, and the inability of any station in the current Audacy portfolio to reach African American music listeners in any significant number, seems to me Urban AC would be the best music option for 92.3 if Audacy ever becomes interested in dumping Alt for another music format.
