Alt 92.9

While no one was looking, it seems that WBOS Alt 92.9 has freshened up its playlist. I've noticed more new and recurrent music with more 2000's gold and much less 90s. It's about time. Now let's get rid of that morning show.

Jacko

I think if Alt 92.9 was smart they would get rid of that crude morning show. The focus should be on the music. They should have a morning show with an inviting personality that puts the emphasis on the music and information about the music.

I don't see Dave & Chuck going anywhere. The show just added a station in Florida. If WBOS was a bust, then Florida wouldn't have been added. I think Beasley is going where ratings are. So, if you are looking for more focus on Alternative music from Boston, I suggest streaming Indie 617. I don't see WBOS dropping the morning show.

In other markets, it's not unusual for the morning show to just be un-hosted music. That's how Entercom ran their station in NY for the past 6 months.

They tried a music-centric morning show in San Francisco, and it was a flop. They got better ratings when he left.

One has nothing to do with the other. Two very different stations in very different markets. The Detroit morning show is a better fit for Ft. Myers; K-Rock's music format is almost identical to that of WRIF. That station's morning drive history includes Howard Stern and Bubba the Love Sponge.

Crude morning shows work just about everywhere and are especially helpful in attracting male listeners in the advertiser-desirable sweet spot, age-wise. I also don't see the show going anywhere.

the way WRFF has been doing it in Philly for the last 11 years, music intense, very little talk from Johnny and one hour music sweeps not any blah, blah, blah....

And the net result is the lowest billing full signal FM in the market. A five share of commercial station audience, but well under a two share of the market revenue.

Well Beasley cut Babba loose recently, and considering what he did to them in Tampa with the ratings scandal, loss of revenue, etc.... they should have canned him long ago.

So that is how the new morning show ended up there....

And anything has to be an improvement over Bubba, I caught him one day spinning the dial... I was horrified.

There are only a couple of stations there I can listen to ....

Do you think Beasley would ever move Toucher and Rich down to 92.9? They get good ratings yes but we know there not sports guys although they have done a good job adjusting over the last 9 years. Just a thought.

Why create 2 problems when you have 1?

92.9 needs a morning show. Why disturb a successful morning show? Then you are back to having a problem finding a new show for The Sports Hub?

Then there's the possibility that T&R doesn't work on 92.9.

92.9 is a cursed frequency. It's been so many things over time that it has no image.

Just my $.02

So was all of Hartford around 2003? iHeart owned Radio 104 WMRQ back then and the picked up Bubba to replace Dee Snider's local morning show. The station stunted with a wheel of formats for like half an hour before doing a big "press conference" to announce Bubba's show. He made deragatory remarks about the University of Connecticut Woman's Huskies basketball players. He referred to them as "sexy b****es". In Connecticut you don't mess with UCONN. The station's ratings plumetted further. In September 2003, Radio 104 gave way to Hip-Hop Power 104.1, which was a train wreck.

The best thing Beasley can do with that piece of shit 92.9 is blow it up and move Bloomberg to it

So your idea is take a 2 share station and make it a .3 share station? Wow.

Well, at least it will be a station not saddled with the ad-agency stereotype of listeners as slackers still living in mom's basement and working nights stocking shelves at Walmart.

I love the alternative format when it's done right.
IE: taking chances on new music, being exciting and controversial if necessary, intelligent in commentary, and in interpretation of popular culture. And critical as well.
WBOS makes a point of being none of those things., and by the way, I don't give a crap about Bloomberg's ratings, it's a great listen, and they need a terrestrial signal that covers the metro area and beyond

Then it will be "saddled" with no listeners......

I have to think that 92.9 is worth, what, say about $50 million? It should post a profit of about 2-2.5 Million /yr for the asset to justify its existence. Any proposal would have to have a chance of accomplishing that. THe "Alt" format(s) are probably the best chance for them accomplishing that.

Any proposal to change the format, should have the upside potential for reaching that goal.

**Estimates are always inexact....you can have your own opinion of the value, and the numbers will change accordingly.

At roughly $7 million annual billing (12th in the market, but less than a quarter the billing of WEEI), they might be cash flowing just what you estimate. At current multiples of 6 to 7 times BCF for FMs, the station is worth about $18 million, give or take. Add in "opportunity mark-up" for a scarce good facility, and perhaps it is worth $22 million at the high end.

At that low end of the better signal revenue spectrum, the cash flow based valuation is also about what stick value would be.
