Alt radio is for nerds

My answers to InsideYourHead:

“u r a ‘goth wannabe that likes dance music’. …” Yes I am. “… rite ok. Du u mean emo??” No. I do not mean emo. I know I’m just a wanna-be, but the one thing I’ve gathered from all my observing of Goths is that Goth and Emo are 2 different things completely, and, in fact, it is an insult to call a Goth Emo.

“u wanna be goth, go 4 it, u wanna dance, go 4 it. I never thought alt fans were better than guys like u but now that I read ur post, u know what, ur right, we r better. …” It’s that kind of attitude that makes people like me think less of alt fans. They all seem to have that “We’re better than you, cuzz your music sucks.” Attitude. If only there was an alt music fan out there that doesn’t judge people by the music they listen to… Oh well… (Sigh.) “… least we know what we want what we like to listen to and were not wannabes.” Oh yeah? Well at least I know where I stand. I know for sure that I’m not cool. I know that, because of my disability and social status, I will never be a Goth, and, to me, the wanna-be, Goths are the coolest people in the world. I know where I stand, and unlike fans of alternative music, I don’t pretend that I’m cool, and I don’t judge other people by the music they listen to. To me, people are people. Oh, yeah, I know what you’re gonna write next: “If you’re not judgmental, then why do you have such a bad opinion of us alt music fans?” I’ll explain that later, so keep reading. As for the comment about knowing what I like to listen to, for your information, dance is my favorite music. However, I like most kinds of music. My second favorite format is AAA (Adult Album Alternative.) I like Smooth Jazz music. I like JPop music. I like New Age and Chill music. I like fifties and sixties oldies, and other music, too. However, when you alt music fans read that I like dance music, you suddenly decided that I was less of a person, and you judged me accordingly. And, because you never asked, you would have always assumed that I was a dance music only listener, and you would have been wrong.
“btw: my gothIC friends most like alt. …” Well, I’m just a wanna-be here. I’ve always wanted to ask a Goth about the music they listen to. My question for you, InsideYourHead, is: Really? Are you sure about that statement? I’d really like to know what your Gothic friends are listening to. If it is the case that they do mostly listen to alternative music like you say, then, I might wanna consider looking for a good alt (internet) radio station (and making sure that my medicine cabinet is stocked with plenty of Aspirin.) “… never heard of 1 want dancing music. …” Well, I’m not a Goth yet, but… Hello. I’m the Radio Kid, and I’m a Goth wanna-be that mostly likes dance music. It’s nice to meet you via this board. “… whatever turns u on dude.”

Hey gothwannabe dancing queen, i think i hear usher playing in the next RI board over.” I’m headed there very shortly.

For all you alt music fans out there: Just remember, it’s not the music a person listens to that makes a person, it’s the person themselves. I will never say that dance music is better than alt music. And, to me, you are no better than I am. However, I don’t think very highly of alt music fans because of the way they have treated me as a person. I went to a community college, and for the most part, the main music people listened to was Alternative. And, because I don’t listen to that kind of music, these people didn’t want to associate with me. They would always tell me how much better they were because they didn’t listen to “loser music.” These Alternative music fans didn’t want to get to know me as a person because of my choice of music. And, really, if that’s how you people determine who is and isn’t a worthy person for this earth, then, it doesn’t bode well for your reputation. Maybe if you would treat people as people, you wouldn’t get posts from people like myself and that other gentlemen calling you losers. I like to treat people as people, but because of my experiences with alt music lovers in the past, I guess you could say that I don’t think highly of them. To me, I like dance, you like alt. So what. Big deal. If you would take the time to actually look at me as a person, instead of judging me, and saying you’re better than me because of our different musical tastes, we might actually be able to have some worth while discussions on this board. Just something to think about.

I hope you all have a nice Momorial Day weekend.

However, I don't sence the same "our music is better, so we're better than you" attitude from dance music fans that an alt music fan has. Dance music is not better than Alternative music, and I am not a better person than you are.

Actually, it's the dance music fanatics who're far more overbearing. Many of them actually think that their music will revolutionize the world, and they automatically label its detractors as "haters".

That's a shame. Yes, I'll admit that I have seen some of that kind of thing over on the dance boards. As nasty of an attitude as I think alt music fans have, I also don't like this attitude from some circles in the dance music community that everyone should like dance music. That kind of attitude from a few dance music fans makes all of us dance music fans look bad, and I don't like it. Again: I value the person, not the musical taste.

And, InsideYourHead, I'm not even going to write a response to your last post because it doesn't need one. I don't know you (only through the few interactions we've had on this thread), but to me, you don't seem like a very nice person. I'm sorry to say that, through your posts, you have shown a perfect example of the attitude of alt music fans that I was talking about. I don't need to write anymore posts in order to proove my point because you, InsideYourHead, have made my point FOR me perfectly. If anyone wants an example of how fans of Alternative music treat other people who don't like the same music, all they have to do is look at your responses to me in this thread.

It is my hope that, in time, the alt music fan base will begin to look at people who don't listen to alt music as people. Then, maybe, people like myself may be able to have real, intelegent discussions with alt music fans. Then, maybe, just maybe, we might be more open to giving this Alternative music thing a try.

Great! That means you can go away now?

Geeze... what are is wrong with these kids now? In the 70s through the 80s they blaimed it on eating lead based paintchips and being raised under power lines. In the 90s they blaimed it on playing Doom. What's the excuse for the issues these days?

dunno what his excuse is but it must be hard to go thru life as a dancing wannabe goth who thinks hes at war with alt listeners. lol

InsideYourHead, I do not think I'm at war with alt music fans. However, because I listen to different music, they think they're at war with me. When you can look at me as a person, then, maybe we can have a real discussion about alternative music. I'm open to hearing what you have to say. However, if you're going to be rude to me, and treat me as a lesser person simply because I'm a dance music fan, then, yeah, you're gonna get a knee jerk reaction. You say that your music is the music that everyone should listen to. Okay. Tell me why. I mean, who knows. I might start to see things from your point of view, and may be more open to listening to Alternative music in the future. What are some good alt bands? However, if you and all alternative music fans are rude to me because of my listening tastes, I'm not going to be very open-minded about this. Until you can talk to me as a person, I will not respond to anymore of your posts.

Quote from SterioBrain:
"Great! That means you can go away now?"

I can, but I won't. I want to see if there is an Alternative music fan out there reading this board that is willing to treat me as a person despite the difference in musical tastes, and is willing to add some intelegence to this discussion. I'm not giving up so easily.

So, if you are an alt music fan willing to hold an intelegent discussion about music, please join this debate. However, if you wanna be rude, and call me names because I'm a dance music fan, go do that on your own personal myspace page, or whatever you have. Thank you.

I usually try to stay out of this argument, but I'll throw my hand in.

I enjoy alternative music. I grew up on it, and continue to listen to it today (although I program a Hot AC station). But my one complaint about Alternative music today is the attitude. Yes, I probably am being stereotypical, but I see the "holier than thou" feelings by those who are fans of bands like Vampire Weekend, Spoon, MGMT (Time to Pretend... GREAT song), Death Cab for Cutie and more.

Altenrative is just that... the Alternative to pop, lite rock, and anything else on the radio dial. For awhile, it was lined up closely with Modern AC (Nine Days, Third Eye Blind, Smash Mouth), and for a while, it turned New Rock (Disturbed, Korn, Limp Bizkit). In the past year or two, Alternative has been able to balance itself back out to the Alternative sound it started with, being pretty independent of the other charts (there will ALWAYS be crossover).

But I seriously think that the Alternative format is hurting because of the attitude. If you don't like this band, then you get a nose turned up at you. If Spin magazine likes it, then it must be good. If Indie 103.1 is playing it, then by God I'm gonna go download it from iTunes. I'm cool because I heard this band before they went mainstream. It's hurting "true" Alternative stations, as those who can't stand the attitude tune out, leaving only a small niche audience for the station to serve. Looking at the ratings of some of the "true" alternative stations out there:

--Indie flounders below a 1.0 12+. Yes their signals are pretty much the worst in LA, but the right format targeted at the right people will always bring in numbers.

--WFNX has slipped back below a 1.0 in Boston.

--The End in Seattle slipped below a 2.0

--96.5 The Buzz in KC tripped back to a 2.0.

--And CD101 in Columbus gained last book, but sits below a 2.0, while Clear Channel's cookie cutter Alt station debuted with a 2.5.

While FM104.1 in Hartford and Radio 104.5 in Philly continue to show positive numbers. They mix in the New Alternative with the classics people grew up on, and they don't throw in the attitude. For that, I believe they are winning.

This is just the mindless rambling and opinions of myself. Tear apart my comments all you like.

when did i say that? when did any1 on this thread say that?
what i DO want is for alt to stop being killed off on the free airwaves to make room for more classic old rock and more dance music, n i mean the pop sh*t they play in the clubs. is that what u wanna hear? then come to atlanta cuz we got 3 or 4 stations playing that. not 1 alt station anymore tho. u ask me, i think its alt fans getting f**d these days.
