Alternative Format in Waco, Temple, Killeen area?

The Waco market (#190) has only 10 commercial FM stations....

92.9 - Country
94.5 - Rhythmic
95.7 - Classic Hits
97.5 - Top 40
99.9 - Country
102.5 - Active Rock
104.1 - Regional Mexican
104.9 - Classic Country
106.7 - Classic Rock
107.9 - Top 40

So what would you sacrifice for an Alternative Rock station? Maybe one of the two Top 40 stations? Yes, there are two mainstream Country stations plus a Classic Country outlet. But after all, this is Central Texas. I'm surprised there's no Urban or Urban AC. And no AC.

In the Killeen-Temple market (#131), the story is similar. (I'm surprised this is a larger market than Waco.) Only seven commercial FM stations....

92.5 - Urban
96.7 - Jack FM
101.7 - Regional Mexican
103.1 - Urban AC
105.1 - Country
105.5 - Country
106.3 - Rhythmic
107.3 - Active Rock

In this case, there's two Urban stations. But no Top 40, no Classic Hits, no Classic Rock, no AC.
also on your mention of no AC, one thing ive noticed is through the years, M&M broadcasters has tried resurrecting the star format that was originally on 92.9 then they tried on 101.3 then 104.9 but its flopped the past two times.

One I might add is Spanish CHR Latino 99.1 and 93.5 (KLTO) which is licensed to Moody but really targets Killeen-Temple and is combined with a translator in Waco.

Killeen-Temple has only 35% listening to local stations, and is 238th in revenue despite being 134th in population as so little listening is given to local stations... even worse than Waco. All the stations combined in that market bill just over $3 million, and the top two are around $750,000 each.

I wouldn't dispute the 35% number, but it also might be a little misleading. iHeart has the only two stations that really fully cover Waco and Killeen-Temple in totality, which is one of the reasons it isn't a combined market. WACO and KWTX-FM are technically in the Waco market, but for practical considerations local in Killeen-Temple as well... many of their advertisers are in that area, they do remotes and giveaways there all the time, etc. iHeart has run the two markets together out of Waco for a long time. Some of the other iHeart stations have a presence there too in addition to their two "local" stations. A decent chunk of that 65% out of market listening is actually to Waco stations in addition to Austin.

Killeen-Temple has also lost a few stations over the years too to Austin such as 93.3, 104.3, and 107.7.

yeah it sucks

I used to enjoy catching 103.9 the X (KHLR and later KXCS) when I went down to that area. They rimshotted Bryan/College Station. They were a rockin’ alternative station that played a good variety. They covered that area fairly well but didn’t make it into Waco.

Of course since then they moved the tower and dropped coverage. 103.9 is a little too positive and encouraging now to consider a switch back to rock.

KBRQ and KLFX are nice, but they’re pretty much the same station as have the same feed. Townsquare does the same thing with all their classic rockers and CHR’s in East Texas and the Ark-La-Tex.

An interesting note: KTYL has officially shifted to mainstream CHR. I thought they were adult CHR, but they have the same playlist as the other Townsquare CHR’s in the region. Maybe that happened two years ago when 95.3/102.3 signed off.

I’d love to see Temple/Killeen/Waco get an alternative rocker. I’m not holding my breath.

I remember kxcs it was such a good station! But yeah I hated it when they moved the tower away from temple

KTYL is not a CHR, mainstream or otherwise. It is programmed as a Hot AC.

Last I recall they were Hot AC. I tuned in back and forth between them and KRUF a couple months ago and heard the same songs in succession. I looked on the websites of KTYL, KRUF and KAFX. They all had the exact same playlist. I couldn’t pull up KPWW’s playlist, but I suspect it’s the same. I recall those other stations still being CHR. Whatever they are, they are the same format.

Says more about the state of today's Contemporary Hit Radio as a format than anything. Each station you mentioned is indeed nearly identical to the other in their presentation, but can you really call it "contemporary hits" when certain selections on the playlist are over 30 years old? In each instance, there is no alternative to The Fox or Mix, which is the looming reason why they remain pretty broad.

Reynolds basically does the same with The Blaze here. It steers clear of Kiss's R&B lane, but everything else under the "Urban" umbrella is fair game. It's all the area has in hopes of targeting predominantly young Black and Hispanic listeners here. 96.3 in Lufkin-Nacogdoches leans the same way.

BTW, I believe this is the 3rd iteration of "Magic" in Waco.

Yes you are correct

I guess KTYL still reports as Hot AC. I thought it was quite odd they have the same playlist (feed) as the CHR’s in the region.

As far as alternative around Waco and Temple/Killeen, maybe KUTX could acquire another station or some translators to cover the area. I know they simulcast on KXBT 88.1, which rimshots Bryan/College Station. They could get AAA with that anyway.

It’d also be nice if KXT could expand coverage with translators like Indie 102.3 (non-commercial now) does in Colorado. They could add coverage to places like Waco/Temple/Killeen. I think they should at least replace redundant KERA translators in Tyler and Wichita Falls with KXT, anyway. Those towns have two other outlets for NPR.

The translators I want to see something done with are KYKX’s translators. Their 103.7 translator broadcasts from the KYKX tower so there’s nowhere their signal is stronger than KYKX. They also come in strong in Tyler so the weak 106.1 is also pointless.

They need to flip to alternative since they block KVIL. KVIL now drops out before Lindale due to interference from the 103.7 translator.

I saw the original intention was to broadcast a KYKX HD subchannel. KYKX still isn’t broadcasting in HD. Alpha also has 99.9 in Longview that rebroadcasts KTAA 90.7, a C1 located 10 miles from town. That’s also pointless.

As you know, I am just a couple of miles to your south and I've mentioned it a time or three that KVIL is the worst DFW signal here at the ranch. K279CI is the reason for it. Interestingly enough, my reception of K291CH in Tyler is noticeably worse than reception of KYKX coming all the way from East Mountain. The reason for this is that the CP for K291CH has not been built out as of yet. I don't ever listen to KYKX on the translator, but I'd reckon you'd have a rough time giving it a listen in Lindale.

As long as Alpha owns it, KYKX never will. Access 1 was going to take both 100kW stations (KOOI and KYKX) HD, applied for the translators, built them out, and then sold everything to Alpha in 2015. The only thing that Alpha has done with the cluster is adding La Invasora to their newly owned signal on the Longview side of the market. Even it, technically, is not part of the cluster. KTLH reports as a Shreveport-Bossier facility, so as to keep Alpha within the cap. Also the reason 107.9 is licensed to Hallsville and not Longview. If there was money to be made launching an alternative here, partner, I'd lobby 'til I was red in the face to just do it ourselves. There's just very little audience here for what the alternative format has become, and 96.1 has already picked up the likes of 3 Doors Down, Nirvana, RHCP, Pearl Jam, etc. It would be an extremely uphill battle to start from scratch again the well established rock outlet in ETX.

K260CE is leased to the Bott. Sure it's redundant, but it's also on the Bott's dime. I believe they still lease another one up at Lake Bob Sandlin, too. It, however, is with someone other than Alpha.
