Alternative Rock in Cleveland

VODood said:
It's an HD channel. You and maybe 100 more people have HD radios in Cleveland. There isn't an audience.

That doesn't mean they should ignore it, as they have.

Btw, I never said there was/wasn't an audience or even hinted at it... just noting that it is their own technology and it shouldn't be ignored. That is someone who is not doing their job. Which btw also... while its currently on the air, the RDS is stuck on Bush "The Chemicals Between Us", right now.

It's so much easier to decide what songs to add to my MP3 player. I'm up to about 1700. And, it cost me under $100.

Seriously...I have no honest clue what I'd do if running a radio station as a successful business was the goal in Cleveland. Virtually every format that reaches audience that has money to spend (that advertisers covet) is already taken.

Or, am I missing something? Maybe.

The biggest issue is ALT ROCK is a really hard demo to sell. Radio isn't about the creativity as much as it once was, it is now about the bottom line.

M18-34 it may be number one, great for a programmer!

Sales department says "More Tattoo's, Brews and Boobs" yay!

Corporate will side with the sales department no matter how high your Male 18-34 numbers are.

While the music purist in me screams: play great music....who cares if doing so can pay the bills?

But, my head says: if playing the music we love just can't generate enough money, who's going to pay the bills? employees' salaries? stock holders?

Reality: it's a business first and foremost. Even public radio needs to generate revenue.

Advertisers want to reach enough consumers with adequate disposable income to potentially buy their products. Advertising pays the salaries. Without enough revenue, there is no radio station.

Just the way it is, folks.

agreed Tim. If I am not mistaken, RCRG is still tied in with Nick Anthony who is a pretty good consultant. Plus they have Sue Wilson in the house.

Sue Wilson knows Cleveland VERY WELL. She knows AC programming VERY WELL.
Nick Anthony was the architect behind WQMX and WONE.
Cleveland really has a huge opening with a truly defined Classic Hits/AC station.

Lake plays Classic Hits, Magic plays Classic Hits, WDOK plays AC. What if one station could play a great blend of both Classic Hits and AC and go right after the average age of Clevelanders and Akron folks...

Here is something else to chew on. WQMX is licensed to Medina and if I am not mistaken, majority of their Cleveland numbers come from Medina county. WNWV could change city of license to Brunswick or Wadsworth and move into the West Market studios.

There is another 107.3 in southeastern Ohio (Wheeling metro area, I think)....so, WNWV can not move its transmitter site much, or increase it's coverage (which is pretty decent any way). But, I don't think that is what you guys meant.

Whatever happens, it'll be fun to wait and listen. Film at 11, as a man I know likes to say. :)

If the FCC moves at it's usual pace these days (faster than in past decades because fewer stations are changing hands), the approval could be as early as right after the new year.

WNWV will stay licensed to Elyria, and will continue to pump their signal out of their Grafton tower vis-a-vis a lease with ELB.

I don't think any COL change or move to Akron is in the cards. Sure, 107.3 will have some serious marketing and promotion into Akron as well, but it will continue to be a Cleveland station first and foremost.

WNWV will likely have to move out to the RCRG HQ in Akron temporarily when the sale closes (they gotta get out of Elyria when that happens), but it's obvious that they are looking for new studio space/sales offices in Cleveland as we speak.

For some reason, I was thinking about WMJI's old studios at West 3rd/Lakeside... just me, and nothing else.

Remember where WGAR used to be? At Rockside at I-77...that huge "glass" building?

Just a guess...but, I'm thinking the studios will be somewhere suburban.

Downtown locations are a constant traffic and parking problem, in my opinion. No real value in being "downtown" in many (not all, but many) markets in 2011.

And that would be a good spot for 107.3's new studio - a very short drive to Rockside/I-77, and a very convenient spot to hop on I-77 to get down to Akron.

There's also the old Metro space up the road, but that probably has no radio infrastructure left.

Unless they get a really, really good deal downtown, I don't see 107.3 landing downtown.

Word is a few years ago Crocker Park courted ELB to put The Wave studios there, at a discounted lease. The GM turned down the offer. What a mistake to not have your studios/offices at a prime location like Crocker and showcase it with a street level studio. Location is between I-90 and the Stearns/I-480 exit. Easy for reps and clients to access. And I'm sure generate a lot of business from those retailers located there.

When I worked for OmniAmerica's WLLD/Columbus mid-90s they had beautiful street level studios. Listeners loved to watch the talent on air. No VTing then. If a tracked shift today you could just close the curtains (better than blinds for sound dampening).

Not to mention American Greetings is slated to move there at around 2014 or so. A coup for Westlake and that immediate area.

If this was indeed true... words cannot convey...

It was dead until 87.7 Cleveland's Sound came on the scene in late 2012. Then on New Year's Day 2014, it became La Mega.

Also in 2012 came 99X on 99.1 and WMMS-HD2. That lasted until 2020 when it came BIN - Black Information Network.

Finally, 107.3 The Wave was replaced by JenY 107.3 in January 2020. After nine to ten months as a Modern AC, it went Alternative, which remains today, though rumors have been flying of its demise.

At least there's the internet and the non-comm band at 88-92.

Didn't WNWV lose their PD recently? I wonder what that means.
WNWV/Cleveland Ups Alyssa Ursetti To PD And Kris Drew to APD

"RUBBER CITY RADIO Alternative WNWV/CLEVELAND MD ALYSSA URSETTI is upped to PD replacing TONY MAZUR, who exited the station last month (NET NEWS 4/25).

URSETTI has spent the past seven years with RUBBER CITY. She moved to WNWV to help rebrand the station to "107.3 CLEVELAND'S ALTERNATVE" at the beginning of the year. Prior to joining WNWV, URSETTI was Promotions Director for sister Soft AC WAKR and Classic Rock WONE/AKRON."
