KDKA experimented with repeaters in Nebraska early on.
How did that work? Did they rebroadcast KDKA from a phone connection of some sort, or did they pick up the OTA signal and rebroadcast it?

It was a fascinating experiment, coming so early in the history of radio. That 1923-26 timeframe predated the start of NBC itself, and could have taken radio in a very different evolutionary path.I never knew KDKA was on SW and from an area Im very familiar with after my time in Ord and my time in Laramie
I would agree. That’s why it feels like this thread has long run its course and we’re going in circles. 1110 is not coming back. Not from another site. It’s dead.
There are actually two.I would agree.
Does anybody have some savings to pay those BMI/ASCAP fees?
It's time that Urban One just releases 1110 to us radio geeks, and we can use the 50KW station to play what we want. Jack FM only plays 500 hits that he likes. We'll play Buddy Holly, the latest pop tune from Luxembourg, The Carter Family, "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport", Navajo Indian chanting, smooth jazz, acid jazz, classic jazz, world jazz, and even a random playing of "Kokomo". Plus Jack Benny old-time radio and other shows. With a "WBT AM Charlotte" ID at the TOH. Grassroots operation for radio geeks and by radio geeks.
It would be far better than that lounge music loop. Might even get local attention. The station with zero format.

Then you might as well try eclectic formats such as Chinese polka or hillbilly disco. Anything to shock the hell out of the masses because heck knows they all need it!!!It's time that Urban One just releases 1110 to us radio geeks, and we can use the 50KW station to play what we want. "But my Stax-O-Wax!"And why should U1 just hand over programming to a bunch of nerds? that would be a raging dumpster fire disaster!
and the only listeners would be the p[eople hosting showsI'm kidding! No need to be so in arms about it. But man, talk about a community radio station...more eclectic than a college station
A couple of clarifications..y. business like Kroger have ad agencies, and not always does the agency even have an office in the same city as the client. With the ability to do video conferences online today, that is pretty much unnecessary. Even in the past, an agency would have an office near a client only in cases like Detroit for the automakers. With occasional exceptions, none of those categories of business are advertising on the radio, especially at night. That's one of the existential crises in the industry ... not enough big brand advertisers.
But for argument, let's say Harris-Teeter is advertising on radio. Harris-Teeter is a supermarket owned by Kroger, which is based in Cincinnati. Chances are real high that the twenty-something year old ad buyer based in Cincy has never been to Charlotte, and would have no reason to know anything about its coverage beyond Charlotte. They only see the ratings info and the prices the radio station expects.
With so many companies being consolidated, it is rare these days that an ad buyer is actually in the market they are buying, so they only know what the numbers say.
A station appearing in nearby markets ratings is extremely rare these days, so the measurements that appear on a buyer's desk wouldn't indicate WBT had listening beyond Charlotte, thus it cannot be something "advertisers like."
BTW, unrelated to Charlotte... but Kroger cutting all its radio advertising was one of the things thayt really hurt one of my former employers. Kroger went from a $5000 a month account to $0 overnight.
